Peeing Problems Solved! e-Hub ready with Hygienic and Swachh ‘e-Toilets’

Peeing Problems Solved! e-Hub ready with Hygienic and Swachh e-Toilets functioning from 11 July

Mangaluru: As the saying goes, “When you got to go, You got to go!”. But at present in a City like Mangaluru, when you got to go, there is hardly any clean and decent toilet to go. Not any more, starting tomorrow, 11 July, the Education-Hub (e-Hub)-Mangaluru will soon be seeing e-toilets, with slot machines, for a rupee, giving you access to plush loos. Say goodbye to those stinky and filthy ‘Sulabh Sauchalaya’ toilets, and welcome e-Toilets! Users have to have insert coin/coins in the slot before entering the toilet. The toilet will be fully automated and will flush automatically before and after use. These toilets by Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will provide access to ultra-clean, environment-friendly toilets. But with shortage of coins/ and people not accustomed of carrying change in their pockets, will these e-toilets succeed in business?.

Goodbye Open Peeing…..

But it is nice to note that having battling garbage and having ruthlessly been humiliated in many quarters, Citizens should appreciate MCC for this e-Toilet initiative. With technology not been able to change the mindset of people towards garbage segregation, this tech will change the toilet experience for the public. The insertion of a coin opens the door of the e-toilet for the user, switches on a light – thus saving energy – and even directs the person with audio commands. The toilets are programmed to flush 1.5 liters of water after 3 minutes of usage or 4.5 liters if usage is longer. It can also be programmed to clean the platform with a complete wash down after every five or ten persons use the toilet.

These five e-toilets built by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) for Mangaluru City Corporation, of which two each are near MCC Lalbagh Bus Stand; and at Kadri Park vicinity; and the other one is near the Evening University College (on the road going towards Mangalore Central Railway Station)-Hampankatta. The public sector oil company, HPCL has built these e-toilets under its corporate social responsibility. The ready to use four e-toilets have been provided with water, electricity facility and linked to the sewage network. It is learnt that HPCL has spent Rs 30 lakh on this project, each e-toilet costing Rs 6 lakh. These 4 toilets would be commissioned tomorrow, 11 July 2017.

……….e-Hub welcomes e-Toilet

MCC Environmental engineer Madhu Manohar speaking to Team Mangalorean said, “Anyone wanting to use the e-toilet facility could enter it by inserting Re 1 coin and also coins of other denomination. The unmanned toilet has automatic flushing and sanitizing facility. When a user enters the e-toilet, lights and the exhaust fan will switch on automatically and go off once the user leaves the toilet. Hand wash facility is also available inside it. HPCL has handed over these e-toilets to the civic body, to be maintained by the Mangaluru City Corporation. HPCL may build more public toilets or any other project as suggested by the MCC. Mangaluru selected under smart city mission of the Union government hitherto lacked e-toilets- but in the nearest future, eight e-toilets more we-toilets may come up at Light House Hill, Kaprigudda, Valencia Junction, Surathkal Junction, Surathkal Market and at Pakkaladkka (two toilets).”

In conclusion, five e-toilets for the entire city of Mangaluru- how will that be helpful is something that should be looked at. With one e-toilet installed near the busy Mangalore Central Railway Station Road (adjacent to University evening College), imagine thousands of passengers alighting at Mangaluru Central station and walking towards the city, and want tom use the toilet very badly- just wondering how big the queue will be to enter this “lonely” e-toilet. Also there are chances that toilet users may misuse the service- like one can go into the e-toilet by inserting a coin, but the person behind him or her can hold the door by not allowing it to shut, so once the first person comes out, he/she can go in without dropping the coin in the slot. Free service? Wishing the e-toilet all success, let’s have “Swachh Toilets” for a better “Swachh Mangaluru”!
