Pothole Claims Pillion Rider’s Life- Rider Injured in Belavi downtown on Karkala- Moodbidri National Highway

Moodbidri: A pothole-filled road in Mangaluru has claimed the life of a man. Sunil and Dharmappa were going on a bike on the National Highway 169 near Belvai when a speeding lorry rammed their bike. While Dharmappa, who was riding pillion, died on the way to hospital, Sunil who is seriously injured it taking treatment at a private hospital in the city.

Police said it was raining heavily on Saturday evening and the accident happened when Sunil, after reaching Belavi downtown (near Sumana Bar) on Karkala-Moodbidri national highway, noticed a huge pothole in the middle of the road and suddenly applied the brake to avoid it without noticing a speeding truck coming from behind. It was heavily raining and the duo were on a gearless vehicle. A truck which had Tumakuru registration rammed their bike.

As soon truck rammed, victim Dharmappa’s head was pinned under the truck wheel, Sunil too received injuries on the waist and other parts of the body. Victims were immediately rushed to nearby hospital, where Dharmappa was declared dead and Sunil was rushed to private hospital in the city. Sunil and Dharmappa, both are relatives and masons by profession. They were returning to their village Manchakal, Siddakatte in Bantwal taluk after work.

Dharamappa married a few years ago, is survived by wife and one and a half-year-old child. Police have arrested truck driver Raghavendra, a native of Davanagere. There was heavy traffic pile-up for some time due to the incident. If you look at the condition of the road for about 50 km on national highway stretching from Nanthoor, passing through Vamanjoor, Moodbidri and Karkala it has been battered heavily with potholes putting lives of motorists at risk. And every year, during monsoon huge potholes are common near Nathoor junction- and until now neither NHAI or MCC has taken any initiative to fix this problem.
