Shop Owners Confront MCC Officials over Removal of Parking Signs

Mangaluru: Whether you agree or not, ever since MCC Mayor Kavitha Sanil took over the office, she has been tough on certain civic problems-thereby directing the officials to deal with illegal street vendors by evicting them, remove illegal flex hoardings/banners in the city, crack down on businesses operating without trade licences; etc etc. Recently the Mayor had warned the businesses to remove all the parking signs erected in front of their business, informing them that the parking area belongs to the MCC and public, and not theirs. In spite of the warning, many shop owners have been still placing those parking signs in front of their shops.

This morning the Officials of the Town Planning Department and MCC made a surprise drive from Lalbagh-MG Road, KS Rao Road, State Bank road, Bunder road etc- and during their drive along these routes they evicted street vendors, parking signs, etc. While everything went on well on these routes, but the officials were out of luck when they were trying to remove parking signs in front of the shops on Mission Street, near Bunder. When the shop owners came to know that their parking signs were removed and dumped on the truck, a few of the shop owners came running out and clashed with the Town Planning and MCC officials.

Even while the officials were explaining to these shop owners about the law, the business owners were very reluctant to listen to the officials, instead started abusing and arguing with the MCC officials, saying that they should fix the dilapidated roads first and then evict street vendors and remove parking signs. The officials had no choice than to listen to the loud voices of these shop owners and decided to leave from the area. In the meantime, with the help of their friends, the shop owners climbed over the truck, and grabbed all the parking signs that were confiscated by MCC.

Speaking to Team Mangalorean, a official with MCC said, “We did a big mistake today by going around without police escort. Since there was shortage of police force, since many were sent to Kalladka and Bantwal for security, we had to face this problem with the shop owners. We will be back again accompanied by police next time. We are following the rules, and the citizens should also do the same” .

  1. My full support to MCC and their staff. Shops owner think that, roads are in front of their shop is their fathers property. Put heavy fine who dont allow people to park vehicles.

  2. Previous Mayors did not have guts to do what Mayor Kavitha does now. Full supports to Her in Her efforts. Footpaths belongs to Public and still Shop Owners do not get the message.. Public should join the efforts of MCC Staff. Thanks to Mayor and MCC Staff who are brave.
Dear Mayor, will you please remove a Vending Cart which is doing business near a deep gutter near Kadri East Police Station-Opposite Green Park Restaurant . I have informed Environment Dept. regarding this 2 weeks back. Still No Action. If anyone makes a wrong move with wrong step may fall 6 ft. into gutter and get killed.

  3. First of vacant land must be bought by the MCC in diffrent areas and covered to paid parking lots.then only the issue will resolve.Good write up Alfie.Cheers !!
