Udupi: In view of recent incidents involving the use of firearms in the district, the Udupi District Police have conducted a special inspection drive across the district to verify the background of firearm licence holders and examine the condition of the weapons in their possession.
During the month-long special operation, police inspected a total of 2,925 firearms across the district. These included 1,759 SBML, 554 SBBL, 318 DBBL, six DBML, 120 pistols, 119 revolvers, 30 rifles, 13 bore guns and six NP-bore firearms.
During the inspections, unauthorised modifications were detected in four firearms within the jurisdictions of different police stations.
In connection with the violations, separate cases were registered at Shankaranarayana, Kota, Brahmavar and Karkala Town Police Stations. Cases have been registered under Section 25 of the Indian Arms Act, 1959, against those accused of making unauthorised modifications to firearms. The cases are currently under investigation, police said.
As part of the inspection drive, police also conducted special verification of the conduct and activities of persons with rowdy sheets and firearm licences. Police also collected information on whether any licensed firearm holders had been involved in criminal cases after obtaining their firearm licences.
The Udupi District Police said continuous surveillance would be maintained to prevent the illegal use and unauthorised modification of firearms, and necessary legal action would be taken in the interest of public safety and law and order.
The police appealed to members of the public to immediately inform the nearest police station or the Udupi District Police Control Room if they have any information regarding the illegal use, modification, or possession of firearms.
