St Aloysius Pre University Model United Nations (SAPMUN) Inaugurated on 1 November

 Mangaluru : The inaugural ceremony of the first edition of St Aloysius Pre-University Model United Nations (SAPMUN) 2019 was held at the Loyola Hall on the 1st of November 2019.

SAPMUN is an educational simulation activity based on the working model of the United Nations aimed at fostering a diplomatic zeal among the students of high school, pre-university and undergraduate level by providing them a platform to discuss and role-play as the delegates of different nations. The ceremony commenced with a prayer song followed by a prayer dance. The inaugural was initiated in a novel way by sowing of seeds by the dignitaries symbolizing the growth of transformation.

Rev. Fr Clifford Sequeira S J, Principal of St Aloysius P U College in his address expressed his appreciation for the student organizing committee for hosting the very first edition of SAPMUN. He acknowledged the participation of the delegates from various schools and colleges and emphasized the importance of such an event in honing thinking and organizational skills that would enable the participants to turn a sensitive eye towards the various conflicts ailing society today. He wished the delegates to have an enriched and enlightened experience at SAPMUN.

In his presidential address Rev. Fr Dionysius Vaz S J , Rector of St Aloysius Institutions reminded the gathering of the origin of United Nations as a platform for nations to come together and to address the major issues faced by the world. Speaking of SAPMUN, he considered it to be in line with the ideas put forth by the National Draft Education policy that focuses upon intellectual curiosity, critical inquiry and strong ethical compass. In closing, he wished the delegates that may creative learning and critical thinking be the forte of the event.

Rakshith Shetty, Co-Founder PAR ECO, Chief Guest of the ceremony reminisced about his time at SAPUC and thanked the institution for providing him with an exposure that enabled him to be a person he is today. Speaking about waste management, the major concern of today, Shetty stressed on the importance of developing sustainable solutions for recycling and better management of waste.

Maxson Desilva, Staff Convener of SAPMUN proposed the vote of thanks and extended his appreciation to all the core committee members who worked tirelessly towards organizing the event. Also present on the dais were Rev. Fr Vinod Paul S J, Finance officer SAPUC, Ms Sasha D’Souza Secretary General, Mr Azaan Ibrahim Director General, Ms Letitia D’Costa , the Student Convener. Ms Anusha Shetty and Dhrouv Patel compered the programme.

During the three-day programme, there will be two categories/Target audience: Level 1 : 8th- 10th, PUC; and Level 2 : Undergraduates. The second day, November 2nd has been allotted for the committee sessions of the event. The day will conclude with a social get-together. The closing ceremony will be held on November 3rd which will be presided by Justice Santhosh Hegde, a former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, former Solicitor General and Lokayukta for Karnataka State from 2006-2011. The outstanding delegates from each committee will be awarded on the basis of their performance with the best delegate, high commendation and special mention as first, second and third respectively, with certificates and cash prizes of Rs 3500, Rs 2500, and Rs 1500 respectively along with participation certificates for all.
