Mangaluru: DGP Prison Satyanarayan Rao Visits District Sub Jail

Mangaluru: DGP (Prisons) Satyanarayan Rao visited the district sub jail here on February 2.

A guard of honour was given to  DGP Satyanarayan at the entrance of the prison.

Speaking to the mediapersons DGP said,”I have come here to check the activities in the jail, we also need to shift the jail to Mudipu. Government has sanctioned 63 acres of land in Mudipu. We need to take all the measures and safety to shift the jail. Funds have also been released by the government and the construction will be start soon”.

He further said that by Febbruary 20, jammers will be installed in the district jail. At present technicians are installing the jammers in Belgaum, once they finish the work there, they will come to Mangaluru for the installation. We will also increase CCTV cameras in the jail.

The self esteem of the jail staff is very low, they think they are the kings inside the jail. They are not interacting with anyone and we need to increase their self esteem for which we will conduct courses and workshops. The district sub jail here is unique, I have not seen any jail like this one, he said. This jail is different compared to all other jails in the state.

when asked whether there is preliminary screening for visitors or not, he said that all measures will be taken for screening. We have allowed to take the food inside, but mobile phones and other items are prohibited. There is certainly a lapse by the concerned in the functioning of the jail.

When asked about the status of internal investigation in the double murder case in the sub jail, he said that the report has been sent to the government and the department enquires are on.

When asked about continuous internal fights in the cell, Rao said that, the capacity of the jail is 210, but now we have 310 prisoners and the jail is overcrowded. The under trail prisoners are youngsters and it is different from other jails. We always send them outside but escorting them back to Mangaluru is a problem because of the hill terrain and ghat sections it is very difficult.

When asked about the staff involvement in the double murder case and about others who are here from many years he said, officers are not ready to come here, they are even not ready to come on temporary basis. This is a small jail with many problems and needs strong security. I am proposing more staff. We have recruited 320 wardens and the list is announced. Mangaluru is my priority and I will fill all the 28 vacant posts here.
