Bruised Ears
The sweet rustle of the leaves,
Birds chirping and crickets humming,
Open skies, pleasant breeze—
The gentle notes of the paradise.
My heart beats, softly pulsing
To the gentle tone of this realm;
My ears catch the softest whispers,
The minute notes of nature’s lyre.
A bee buzzes far away, faintly,
Ringing clear, loud in my ears,
Ripping the strings violently—
Notes replaced by a lion’s roar.
Absorb it I should, for I have no shield.
The shattering roar slams in my ears,
Piercing through my flesh and bones,
Ripping through my thin eardrums.
The roar hits me like a battering ram,
Scratching the earlobe on its way,
All the while screeching its claim,
What “the nation wants to know” badly.
The roar claims of a chip in a note,
It boasts of a world leader’s rise,
Spewing this rubbish day in, day out,
Bruising to the point of no return.
You stand brave, facing the lion,
Yet I can’t see, for I am blind;
You show that it’s a buzz, not a roar,
Yet I can’t hear you, for I am deaf.
Years of roaring have bruised my ears,
Thickened scars under flaking skin.
Paradise hymns are heard no more—
No roaring lion, just a squeaking rat.
