Mangaluru: Mobile Jammer Installed in Jail Chokes Connectivity around a Kilometre Radius

Mangaluru: Repeated raids on the jails had still not succeeded in stopping the smuggling of mobile phones into the district sub-jail here.

Hence, after repeated assurances and delays, a mobile jamming system was put in place on Friday. It will function on a trial basis for a week or so. It is claimed to be a successful operation.

But its side-effects are being felt by a large number of citizens. The range of the jammer is said to be to an extent up to a radius of a kilometre around the jail premises. There are educational institutions, malls, high-profile offices all around the jail. Even the KSRTC bus stand is within an aerial distance of a kilometre. Hardships are being faced all around these places.

Complaints of poor or total failure in connectivity, irrespective of the service provider, are being heard ever since the jammer was installed. The BSNL subscribers are the worst affected since most of them are served by 2G technology, which operates at a frequency of 900 megaHertz.

But the private service providers have the advantage at 1800 MHz with 3G service. Hence they are not much affected. The jail authorities said that the system is being checked at every frequency and that the problems might prevail over a week until it is accurately set.

I stay in Ibrose Apartments very close to the Jail. This jammer is causing all of us a lot of nuisance. I have missed tons of important calls without realizing. Please do something about it ASAP
