  • From ALPHONSO DSOUZA on Suppose to be 'Clean' City, Kudla Turns into 'Trash' after Mangaluru Dasara?

With due respect to our religious background, we all (every religious group) should evolve a way to celebrate our festivities in such a way that we do not harm our surroundings. Instead all should celebrate it in a way that arrange sports events, dramas, singing competitions, charity work etc etc. Hope we will learn these so that we preserve our traditions and keep our environment clean.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Youth should take care of elders with respect -Pramod Madhwaraj

Each and every parent should receive best possible respect and support from their children, especially when they are getting old. But the times are going thru various challenges, and therefore many children find it difficult to help their parents. Family value systems are also changing, and therefore as much as possible, the parents have to safeguard their own interest during their retirement stage. When parents have sufficient wealth thru movable or immovable assets there is always an advantage to the parents to make sure that their assets are properly controlled thru written Wills or any other Agreements, and make sure that the parental retirement life is well maintained by the children for which there is always a reward attached thru proper Will or Agreement. Parents who do not have any financial strength will have to place their entire hope in their children. This is where the Government can intervene and make sure that the parental retirement benefits are well covered. Senior Citizen Homes or Assisted Living Homes are coming into reality these days in India but these are also becoming expensive and even difficult to get due to acute shortage. Many Nuns and Priests also have now established Senior Citizen Homes but they also find it difficult to maintain these Charitable places for the benefit of the elderly due to financial constraints or even due to lack of public help. When the life span is also expanding in India there will be many more Senior Citizens living longer than before. Where to find them a suitable place to live and survive is a concern the sprouts in everyone’s mind.

Thanks to low standard journalism, political leadership and pseudo-secularism in our country – We are acting and behaving more like one of those Islamic Societies and less like a true democracy. We have reached a point where everything offends someone and a police action is demanded. Very soon, we may reach a point where we will have to shut down entire internet in our country. Unfortunately this also shows a total failure of education system. I don’t think we understand the concept of free speech, individual rights and secular society. Every time we put religion ahead of reason, we take several steps backward. This is why much smaller countries with population of some of our cities have achieved much more than a country of 1 billion people. We are only interested in eating, mediocre entertainment and superstitions. Oh well….

  • From Richard Thomas on Ban on protests at Clock Tower, Jatka Stand issue dominates Udupi CMC meeting

It’s sad to see the people in authority and the representatives of various groups always at loggerheads with each other for issues that should not exist in the first place, i.e. stray dogs, rain damaged roads, atrocities towards Dalits, etc. Most of these and many other issues are highlighted at the Clock Tower – (there is no Clock on the Tower!). Yes, Protests and most recently erecting pandals, should not be allowed on such a busy junction facing the Udupi Service Bus Stand and the KSRTC Bus Stand. It’s a nuisance to the motorists and to the pedestrians, as well as to police and security personnel who have to be deployed. The general public in Udupi knows very well the outcome of any such protest – it’s all political and an eye-wash – BJP versus Congress! it certainly does not benefit anybody’s livelihood – cost of living does not get cheaper, taxes do not get lowered, amenities do not get better, the power outage does not cease, the strikes do not end, the garbage and filth all around does not cease, the open urination on roads and walls do not cease, and last by not least, the infrastructure does not get better. Every thing happens only in Bangalore! Besides, it’s only those jobless (bekaar) people who have the time to watch such protests showcased at the Clock Tower – and that too certainly does not get them a job or a livelihood!

That is a good step in the right direction. Saudi Arabia is trying to open the nation for tourism. The strict theocracy of Saudi Arabia is not allowing the thousands of people working in Saudi Arabia to have their places of worship, even for the Abrahamic religion. That shortcoming of Saudi Arabia will have to be rectified at the earliest to show the world that Saudi Arabia is moving forward. Congratulations.

  • From Ceanlia Vermeulen on 2017 Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking, Manoj Vasudevan enthralls the crowd in Abu Dhabi

What an honour to have met the “World Champion of Public Speaking Manoj Vasudevan”. I was privileged to get a photo taken with him and to do the Thanks to the Champ and all the amazing people attending this exciting event. I’m a proud Toastmaster and meeting Manoj in the flesh was an amazing experience. Public speaking can be daunting for some. But like any skill, it can be perfected with time. Vasudevan says that as a messenger, you are performing a service for your audience rather than speaking for your own validation. When you have a presentation to give, don’t rush to craft it instead first, figure out the fundamentals of the presentation and your goal. Vasudevan says you must “emotionally connect with your listeners and present information in a way that resonates with their needs, goals and agendas.” This was a night to remember. Do you want to become a confident public speaker and strong leader? If so, Toastmasters is the place for you. You’ll find a supportive learn-by-doing environment that allows you to achieve your goals at your own pace. For more information, you’re welcomed to contact me at tmceanlia@gmail.com

It was nice to note that Abu Dhabi raised to the occasion of greeting and honoring Mr. Manoj Vasiudevan, the recently selected World Champion of Public Speaking at the International Convention that took place in Van Couver British Columbia in Canada. Manoj Vasudevan deserves all the support and encouragement so that he may utilize all his leadership abilities to the best possible advantage of all that is available for him in the world arena of Public Speaking. This is a prestigious selection thru which Mr. Vasudevan will be able to share all his leadership skills not only in India but also in many other countries that he is closely connected thru his profession as a Transformational Coach. In a country such as India, we have more followers than leaders, and we are therefore confident that Mr. Manoj Vasudevan thru his triumph in Canada will boost our Leadership enthusiasm in India and many other countries all over the world, particularly in the Middle East, where the Indians, both men and women, are shining in an outstanding proportion. We wish Mr. Manoj Vasudevan best of success in all his future endeavors as a World Champion of Public Speaking throughout the world.

  • From Richard Thomas on Work Towards Achieving Goal of 'Clean India' by October 2, 2019: Venkaiah Naidu

Our leaders in authority are just dreaming and making tall claims. It would have been truly great if the authorities appointed in every state and township were made to do their jobs, and be supervised for hands-on productivity. Otherwise penalized and replaced. Our PM, Mr. Modi stated a few days ago that by 2018 all homes in villages in India will have electricity, without realizing that there are many conditions and costs involved for any individual home or family to obtain electricity to their home. Moreover, where there is electricity already, people are made to withstand erratic power cuts every day in the name of load shedding, constant breakdowns/repairs, and maintenance, etc. Udupi is one such example. Our Vice President, Mr. Naidu is claiming to make India a clean country, without realizing that in towns such as Udupi or Mangalore one cannot find a single garbage bin in public areas or on main roads and streets, that would encourage people to throw wrappers, beverage/water bottles, etc. When our Ex-President, Mr. Pranab Mukherji visited Udupi just two months ago, the Udupi Municipality gave a good eye wash by ensuring that every street and public place en route Sri Krishna Temple and Mr. B.R. Shetty’s state-of-the-art new hospital project, was swept clean and all garbage from roads collected and all shrubs trimmed, and even the incomplete Bi-Pass on NH66 at Karavali junction was tarred and made accessible to the main road leading to Manipal. All shops small and big were ordered shut for 2 days. Loads of money was spent on giving the Government Guest House, an instant face-lift, and get-up to impress the then President. The next day after the President’s visit, the bi-pass was shut to the public, and the same dirt, filth, and garbage are seen now. So why all this false show by the Karnataka government and Udupi Municipality. Why can’t all that is needed in India be regulated and be genuine!

Not a word from her sister who fought tooth and nail with the treating folks in India. Obviously the patient did not get the benefit of the UAE treatment (free) without signing contract under super-strict UAE laws, where the judgments are super-fast as well. What the public will never know is why she died within a week of celebrating her 37th birthday with her family. It is well-known that Egyptians celebrate birthdays with lots and lots of sugary/fatty food. Of course, there is no way to know how this particular birthday was celebrated. But major problems erupted in India when the sister of the patient fed the latter food through the mouth despite the strict warning against it by the Indian doctors.

It is heartening to see the Congress Leadership is back to the old days. As small kids we used to take part in canvassing for the party, people’s contact by means of ‘mane manege visits’. Its now happening. If this happens and engagement with masses are retained, they will win easily. Same way, the other State Congress Leadership must embark on people-contact programmes, which is sadly missing.

It a sorry state of affairs….the Govts: central and state…..do not have even a department leave alone a ministry, for the welfare of sick aged. The existing department ‘Women and child welfare only is concerned about women, as they do not have manpower and funds for others…so no unit of the office is deputed to look after the aged and suffering. All these high and mighty on the stage are only aiming to get awards and rewards and deprive the aged of the meager amount that is available. The elders helpline..1090, for example always complains that they do not receive the grants form govt. Yet they are always ‘rocking and rolling’ and well padded. there is no system of operations and all is piece meal and at the whims and fancies of the operators. the persons sitting there the whole day only look after extraneous and personal matters. No follow up, no survey of what are the needs….the atrocities going on in old age institutions and by those running them. it is all a hoodwinking and an operation that helps no one out side of those running them.

There are many Jacitha’s all over the ME, this is only the small tip of the iceberg. The Indian government should investigate all concerned and there should be levied hefty fines and the monies part or full should be given to Jacintha for the pain and suffering. Special thanks to Mr. Roshan Rodrigues, Dr. Ravindranath Shanbuag and all those who helped. The case should not die a natural death and this matter needs to fully investigated and all found in default should be punished in particular her agents in India, the employer in Saudi Arabia and even the local Saudi police who found her and instead of taking her into their protection they sent her back to the lions den.

We all have failed her. This is really really sad. Where are the cowards in media? Why are you not asking the hard-hitting questions on the nexus between slavery, religious beliefs and lack of human rights? In fact, if anyone brings this up, the same spineless media and pseudo-secular groups will label you as ‘moral police’ or ‘hindutva’ element. My heart goes out for this poor woman. I can only imagine the trauma she experienced, trapped in a house of criminal-family where even kids as young as 5 yrs old were groomed to participate in physical violence and abuse. I request media to stop being stenographers and start doing ‘journalism’. So much to read in Newspapers, web sites and even thru Facebook about the celebration of the Feast of Nativity all over the world, including North America. So fascinating to read so much of cultural and traditional attachment thru the Annual “Monthi Fest” rituals added with liturgical services duly combined with old hymns, songs and customs. Celebrations of feasts such as these all over the world by the Konkany speaking community that connects us together from all over the world. Whether it is in Israel or India, or whether it is in the Arabian Gulf or America or Canada, opportunities such as “Monthi Fest” enables people to gather together and renew their traditional festivities year after year. What a lovely feeling to cherish that Mother Mary is venerated all over the world thru the network of a small community from Mangalore and bring back not only the old memories of the past life of Mangalore but also renew our friendship and acquaintance with a view to respect who we are and where we have come from, in order to make our presence felt wherever we are.

Roshni Nilaya always has something to display that is far from the “usual” from many other Educational Institutions in and around Mangalore. The Institution that is dedicated for various Social Work activities obviously provides additional incentives to prove to be the “best of the best” in so many activities that enables many other Institutions to be as creative as Roshni Nilaya. “Live in your World, play in ours” is a good theme perhaps that attracted many Schools in and around Mangalore to take part in the event on September 16, 2017 and display their best of talents, creative displays to share with each other and encourage each group to produce something “best” that they have and compete with each other. India is a “young” nation with millions of young men and women trying to rise to the occasion to being creative in their displays of unique talents. When many Institutions display their talents on the same stage and prove to be the best, the competition is becoming tough and the judges find it very difficult to select the “very best”. At the end of the day each and every team that participated in the competition have to accept the ultimate decision of the judges as a “VIRTUAL REALITY”. Best of luck to you, Roshni Nilaya, for all your creativity in encouraging the youth to participate in the competitions and bringing a quality performance on the stage with talents from different groups. Let the healthy competition continue to prevail, and let the quality of performance earn the best benefit at the end. Thank you for all your good work. Look forward to seeing you all soon.

It is surprising that despite of Udupi District people having appointed District In-Charge, Mr. Pramod Madhvaraj – no action on concretising the roads in Manipal for a permanent solution to pot holes and bad roads during monsoon is implemented. Every monsoon one has to experience the same state of bad roads in Manipal – full of large pot holes, that are so hazardous to drivers of 2-wheelers and 4-wheelers. The Traffic Dept, and the DC Office are all in the same vicinity, and the people in authority there, they too do nothing to highlight and alleviate the situation. It looks so weird for a few who are concerned to take steps to swim or roll on these bad roads just to draw the attention of those in authority! People should pool in donations and carry out the repairs of roads themselves instead of depending on people who are placed in authority.

This report is a good example of what’s wrong in today’s India. First of all, referring to HJV as a ‘fringe elements’ is very condescending. I don’t remember reading similar usage when it came to PFI. Same way, the report says Police denied permission to hold a protest. They should realize that denying permission to hold protests is undemocratic. They could have allowed the protest and held HJV responsible for any violence or damage. By banning, they have turned HJV into a victim. Finally, the report says that the ‘fringe elements’ thrashed students. If it is true, why did police not register a case against HJV members? Based on video clips online, it is quite clear that there was no physical assault. Does it mean that this report is not factual? If so, why did police let HJV activists go? I’m personally 100% against moral policing. I don’t care if two adults are going out for fun. I’m not here to justify HJV as I find many of their tactics repulsive. But, the media is supposed to be better than these guys. Unfortunately, it’s the media that has repeatedly failed to live up to its own code of conduct. Really unfortunate.

Mr Alfie, you have brought up a very serious matter which is life risk to innocent Public. I have brought this issue during road safety meetings and got zero result. Look at the 4 wheeler repair garage near Sandesha Institution near Nanthoor Circle. Cars are repaired on one lane of Highway. 12 wheeler Tankers and Container trucks speed through here and there is a chance that few lives will be lost soon. Then only DC and PC will wake up for show. I spoke to Corporator of this area and She did not gave a damn. I spoke to Traffic Officers and they said that they will look into it. I suspect that they are wearing dark glasses. Throughout the City there are many placeswhere they do repair of vehicles on road side. and no one cares. They only give lip service. They get their vehicles probably repaired for free. Thanks to you Alfie. Let us see how much effect ,your article will do the difference.

Years back, Mrs Ady Saldanha the parishioner of VALENCIA had filed a CASE in Mangalore Court ( when Fr Alexander D’souza was PP) and my mother also became part of the SUIT against the removal of marbles from the GRAVES during the flooring works done. Mr Placid Saldanha must be knowing the facts. The problem with the Church management is just like our MCC and all Parish Council members along with the CLERGY behave like dictators who think that they are the most intelligent people on this earth. As to Parish Council rules, The priest has to call a PARISH ASSEMBLY to take the opinion of the parishioners during such situations what they never do – Same like Corporator avoiding the formation of WARD COMMITTEE’S. I fully agree with the points mentioned in this ARTICLE. I will join my VOICE.

Such a disgrace!! When did the decisions of a few people echo the sentiments of an entire parish?! Need I add the parishioners who have been there for generations and not just a few years to make these enormous decisions based on their whims! Why does money give anyone the right to erase the history of OUR church?? When did the ‘tombs’ come in the way of anyone?? If funds are in plentiful, then why is it not spent on the original school? Or are we too tied up in our fame and recognition of ‘donations’ to have our names announced in front of an audience in church? We have ALL failed.. Failed to bring about a change… Failed to even notice the state of the playground or the classrooms of the school? Or is it because the children are poor that we conveniently disregard their needs?? Or of the needy of the parish? Where are the priorities?? And why is the cemetry in such a deplorable condition? Why are the funds not allocated towards such maintenance instead? Why bother spending when we can get it cleaned up by parishioners themselves right!? Instead lets blow it up on something completely unwarranted like ripping apart more than a perfectly adequate and significantly historical flooring than polish it up perhaps!! Shameful and distasteful decision-making by everyone involved!!

This is truly shameful. Like stated earlier a lot of money is taken to be buried there. I understand the monsoons are still on but timely Maintenace should not wait for the end of a season. And will the priest and clergy of Mangalore along with the parish councils stop spending money on useless projects to commemorate milestones of the church. Instead of that ghastly unwanted wall, the money could have been spent on the homeless and needy people of the parish, funding children’s higher education etc. Stop wasting money when there is so much poverty around. Keep the vicinity of the church, the cemetery clean and set a good example of leading by example. Please don’t rip out the flooring just because you have surplus funds. Use it to clean and maintain the cemetery.

Mr. Pai – The arrested also belongs to minority (rather super minority). Christians are only 2% of total population of India. What you can appease them. They have given enough to people like you that is why your relatives and children were studying in Christian Schools and Colleges to date. Like Parsies, Christians also worked in building small hospitals and clinics; those who have worked with these institutions know the feeling. I know a large group of Doctors working for Holy Spirit and Holy Family in Bombay; I asked a simple question to one of the Cardiologist “why do you have to work for charitable christian hospitals when you can earn a lot of money in Hospitals like Ambanis” the answer was swift : “We work with those brothers and sisters who care for life and not money; we try to save lives”. I was one of the Heart Patients treated by two well known Hindu Majority Cardiologists. This is only to educate you that it’s not minority or majority. India comes first, if India survives, all can live in it – be it majority or minority.

Dear Alphonso D’Souza Frankly speaking, I am getting tired of the same old talking points of ‘christians built hospitals and schools’. Are they giving education for free? Oh well, it’s a topic for another day. I don’t think I did a good job of explaining my views in my earlier post. My bigger issue is with the ‘censorship’ and ‘banning’ culture that makes everything illegal. In a free, democratic society, we should be able to mock and criticize all religions. Why are we aggressively implementing these blasphemy laws in India? Where will this stop? For example, atheists believe that all gods are false. Does it mean that we are going to arrest atheists for disrespecting hindu/muslim/christian gods? We need to get mature as a society. If a hindu mocks Jesus christ, then Christians should mock Krishna/Raama. If a muslim paints Hindu gods in a funny way, then Hindus should go ahead and do the same for Prophet. See, this way, every community learns to grow thick skin, mutual respect and move on with their life. The banning and censorship will turn India into another regressive hell with no innovation or creativity.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on How Can they RIP in Such a Mess? Bejai Church Cemetery in Pathetic Condition

Thank you very much, Mr. Alfie D’Souza for your article describing the present condition of the Bijey cemetery which was always known to be a place of “organization” in every step of the way. Their daily liturgical services were well conducted, the choir was good, the church hall was excellent and most importantly the Parish Priests were always attentive to the needs of the people of the parish. We are privileged to have the best view of the cemetery of Bijey Church from our seven balconies of our home, and we were almost making up our mind to select Bijey cemetery as our place for final rest instead of Valencia cemetery, but now we are concerned. The deterioration of the cemetery, as you rightly said, must be due to some particular reason, and it might be a good idea for you to approach the Parish Priest or his Assistant and seek their opinion. It is always nice to confide to our priests and nuns our simple grievances in a nice way and see how we can also help them in some of their day to day burdens. It’s tough to run a huge Parish such as Bijey which is growing so fast and the demands of the public are one too many to cope with. But the Church and all the surrounding facilities must be maintained at all times, and the help of the Parishoners must be sought whenever needed. Most of the Catholic churches, not only in India, but all over the world are in a prime location, and the net worth of each property must be equivalent to a gold mine. The Church therefore must continue to seek the help of the people as and when they need the help. Let our Churches, the cemeteries and also the Church Halls be maintained well so that the people can enjoy all that has been built for the people and to the people of the congregation who continue to give their at all times, when solicited. Thank you for sharing your kind observations.

I agree with Dr Michael Lobo. A grant from the State Government is to be used for re-doing flooring of the church building? How about dividing the funds and investing them in good investments so as to pay for poor children’s school fees, poor parishioners’ healthcare, to pay deposits/payments to old age homes for elders who have been abandoned, and such REAL issues? I think each Parish Council member needs to be lobbied to stop this idiotic project. We need a list of all parish council members. A social media blitz on this issue can also be organized. The deadline to register protests with the PP and his council is 20th September, so time is of essence.

It is only in Mangalore churches they constantly keep doing renovation.. We have to do something about it.. We have to restore our old Graves which are burried in our churches. If our priest have more money let them give it to some family or help a child’s in his/her education but NO they will not do that.. They will ask common people for help and charity.

A Student Council has a great role to play in any Educational Institution. In today’s world, a student should be given a choice to speak and vent his or her ideas for the betterment of the Educational system and many other new thoughts that the students might have which he or she individually may not find suitable to express. A student Council is the best entity to present any or all new suggestions to the School authorities and resolve the needs and wants as they become fit. Did he do any damage to the statue? Who decides what is vulgar and what is not? How can police arrest him? This is ridiculous. It pains me to see how quickly India is turning into a religiously hypersensitive society. If our speech, thoughts and actions are censored this way, our country will turn into another pathetic, regressive wasteland. It’s important to highlight the root cause behind this phenomenon of hyper religiosity. The ‘vote bank’ politics and minority appeasement are the main reasons for this tragedy. We have tried to ban any criticism of minority religions in India. For years and years, cowards in media and other responsible positions have failed to uphold the principles of freethinking and individual rights. This has resulted in majority Hindus demanding the same treatment for their gods and goddesses. Again, mark my word – this is not going to end well. Will media and ‘secular’ groups learn a lesson? I doubt.

Kerala Samajam, wherever they are and whatever they do, they always display their image of patriotism and their spirit of enthusiasm in the sense of a “Big Picture” concept. They know what they want, and they know what they are doing. They unite together and they make things happen in a big way. They pool their resources of talents and economies in order to make many things possible and visible. Best of luck to the Kerala Samajam in Mangalore where most of the Keralites have made their “home away from home” with best of their contribution of talents, education and many other resources. They have brought added charm for the secular values of Mangalore.

Having lived in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, for nearly five years more than 30 years ago, we were pleased to read the celebrations of “Monthi Fest” rituals at St. Thomas Church in commemoration of the Feast of Nativity. The traditional Nativity hymns followed by the blessings of the new harvest and also the cultural dances and music followed by even the traditional Mangalorean desert “Vorne” was all an interesting reading indeed. Congratulations to all those Mangaloreans in Calgary that made this event possible in the presence of some of our Indian priests. The diversity of Mangaloreans scattered all over the world gathered together for an occasion such as “Monthi Fest” is indeed a fascinating feeling to realize how much we value our past traditions that we bring back to our place of worship and share those traditions with many others that watch us and admire us. Calgary and Edmonton are vibrant Cities of Alberta where many of our Indians are well established with the Energy related careers. We visit these Cities at least once a year to attend the Oil Conventions. Both these cities are friendly cities where the Canadians go out of their way to help us and support us in order to enable us to make our “home away from home” a comfortable place to reside and establish ourselves with our families. Wishing all our Calgarian Mangaloreans a belated “Happy Monthi Fest”.

Sir, Even in Simpsons it shows that the Law and Order machinery can come into the picture only after someone has been murdered! Merely suggesting that someone is about to murder and hence needs to be arrested does not work. Unfortunate, but true. Most swindlers have little chance for success if the buyers of their services do not show interest in illegally obtaining goods/services.

The Security Department (Law & Order) of Karnataka in all towns and cities must be always alert and vigilant towards suspected people and individuals from Western, Northern, and Southern Indian States, who arrive or migrate to Karnataka to carry out acts of fraud, robbery, murder, and sabotage. Action after a crime is useless as the Indian Judiciary takes forever to punish or eliminate any criminal. That is why India has so many Dons, History-sheeters, and famous criminals still in existence! Statistics on criminal activities and crimes committed should be thoroughly analysed to make Karnataka a peaceful, secure, and crime free State. Any person with a criminal record in his or her own state or any other state must not be allowed to enter Karnataka State.

  • From ALPHONSO DSOUZA on Is this 'World Class Service'? 7 Ticket Counters, Only 2 Open at M'luru Central Railway Station

Mangaluru is one of the cleanest citiies, growing cities. When there is something run by Central Government, like Railways, the city loses the charm. I wanted to enjoy the country side by travelling on KONKAN Railway. I did about 4 trips on Railways from MUMBAI TO MANGALURU and back. The starting station in Kurla is a disgust with dirt from the trains piled up all around the tracks; i was a proud Mangalorean and expected a clean Station IN Mangalore. Surely it is better than Mumbai and Goa; but it is not of INTL Standard at all. The MATSYAGANDHA stops for an hour before reaching MANGALURU; look at the surroundings filled with litter, urination, waste food…. you can check this any time. This indicates what to expect in Mangalure station. Confirmation of tickets, change of dates, refunds … you can never find enough people on the counter. If you talk in Tulu they answer in Malayalam, If you speak in HINDI they reply in KANNADA. Its all buying of time – gimmick. BECUASE they do not want to work. In this IT efficient century – its a shame to see our Railway personnel work so slow; what for these computers are installed. This is why i say confidently -where there is a Government department – be it Railways, HOSPITALS, SCHOOLS, Colleges – they are a junk yard. LOOK at any of the toilet facilities in these centres – you will only get Aids. Sorry to say — the Central Government should take note of this for the sake of Country’s growth.

Thank you dear Violet and family as well as Alfie and family for all your dedication towards the Web Site thru which you keep us informed of so many great events taking place so far away in Mangalore. Wishing you all a very happy Nativity Feast. This Year Texas is slowly recovering from the massive Hurricane Harvey that took away nearly two hundred thousand homes and belongings and making tens of thousands of people homeless. The State is also recollecting similar Hurricane that came to Texas in the year of 1900 where we understand more than twenty thousand lives were lost. Now that we are further threatened three more tragic Hurricanes in Florida and elsewhere and the entire Nation is praying and hoping that these 3 Hurricanes will pass thru without any loss of lives or property. Monthi Festh is a great event to recollect the past humble days. Our parents were kind enough to lay a table full of vegetables and Nativity delicacies that were simple yet gratefully remembered. Today even the variety of flowers are plenty everywhere with flock of children rejoicing with best of clothes. Let the people enjoy the Feasts and have the best of their fun. Let people dedicate the Day with family re-unions and friends gathered with rituals, variety of vegetables and most importantly the blessed crop that will help us to rejoice the new crop of rice all over. Nativity is an opportunity for simple fun filled with lots of family togetherness and happiness. Wishing you all a Very Happy Nativity Feast to one and all of you.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Herbert & Frieda D'Souza being Good Samaritans during 'Monthi Fest'

Nice gesture that is praiseworthy on the part of Herbert and Freida D’Souza during the feast of Nativity by donating the fresh rice crop for performing the Nativity rituals. There are so many ways a good Samaritan can offer his or services for the Community who in turn will benefit the public. God has so many ways to influence people to dedicate their life towards so many causes that help the community to survive. When so many good things happen in our daily life, we often wonder why these good fortunes surround us without any notice. It has happened to us so many times, and we have often consoled ourselves that these must be the gifts from God for all that we try and give unto others in a small way in our daily pursuit of life. We are confronted with so many natural calamities such as Hurricanes during this season. People in millions live in anxiety and fear, and when the Hurricanes hit so badly our houses and destroy our possessions, we cling towards God and ask for His help. When the help comes to us spontaneously people learn a good lesson of their life and offer similar help to many others during their time of need. These gestures become a routine affair in our daily pursuit of life, and we move forward with a life of satisfaction. Well done, Herbert and Frieda, and wishing you both and your families a very Happy Feast of Nativity.

If the culprits are not caught, that will be a national shame. Already the world media is looking at the current Government of India with alarm due to the minority persecution-beef ban (taking off the eating right of the people) anti-conversion laws etc; now the attack upon the freedom of the press has opened the eyes of the world about the highly dangerous autocratic-theocratic march of the nation under the world roaming PM Modi rule. He will not be getting any red carpet treatment at the capitals of the world as he got earlier due to the totally misguided ruling of the nation. PM Modi loves to fly to the western world, had been to the U.S. five times. The U.S. State Department in their annual report for the year 2017, rating of India was sub-standard due to the religious persecution-minority persecution-beef ban-anti conversion law etc. Now, another topic is added ” the oppression of the free press”. India, the so called largest secular democracy of the will be isolated from the rest of the world in different avenues.

“What would the organizers gain by having a one-day protest/chalo demanding the ban of couple of Organizations” – Author. Well, this sums up the sad state of our media these days. Where was this ‘logic’ and urge to avoid any religion based conflicts during recent controversy over ‘bavuta gudda’ road renaming? The ‘couple of organizations’ referred here are the same ones linked to sending people to ISIS. Even Kerala govt and police dept are taking this seriously. When will our media stop engaging in this false moral equivalency and start reporting real threats posed by certain ‘organizations’? It’s always easy to lecture hindu groups on importance of peace, harmony and traffic jams. But it takes honesty and courage to report on ISIS and Pakistan links to Bhatkal and Kasaragodu. As long as media plays this stupid game, the right wing elements in Hindu community will continue to grow. As I’ve said many times before, this is not going to end well. Very unfortunate and sad day for a democracy.

Expecting everyone on facebook/ Twitter to be mature or politically correct is impractical. Clearly there are going to be some sick individuals who will celebrate someone’s death and misery. It’s an unfortunate reality. On other hand, I remember when Kashmiri muslims and students in some universities called for india’s death and defeat. It was rightfully supported by the media as freedom of expression. Why double standards now? I disagreed with both sentiments but support their right to express their opinion no matter how immature/hurtful they are.

The culture of ban is spinning out of control. Banning books, banning movies, banning speech, banning people from visiting a place or holding a protest – Where is this going to end? If police is worried about violence, they should have a direct talks with organizers of this rally and hold them responsible for any violence/damage. Why ban?

  • From ALPHONSO DSOUZA on Handover Apartments to Owners after Obtaining Completion Certificate - Mayor Kavitha

This message is for our respected Mayor – Smt Sanil. My wife and I are the owners of a 3 bedroom apartment in Essel Star – Bikernakatta. We paid the full amount by cheque and cash from our NON RESIDENT ACCOUNT. I have the proof. At the time of payment, the builder assured me that I will have a parking slot in the building because it is a 3 bedroom apartment. Trusted him and registered our apartment. However, he did not give the historical documents pertaining to the predecessor of the plot nor did he provide us with the actual construction plan. We chased him for Completion Certificate and for the parking. From 2009 till to date we have exhausted all our energy running after this building who now says the Society is responsible. What we ultimately saw were four shops in front of the building where we were promised our parking. The MLA of our area has visited this building. We had written emails to his office asking him to help us with Drainage (STILL NOT CONNECTED), arrange for Completion Certificate. We are paying our tax without fail every MARCH. With three bedroom apartment we neither have a completion certificate nor do we have a parking slot. We bought this apartment to house our 86 year old mother when our ancestral house was cut into half by the Highway Authority to widen the road in Bikernakatte. After 8 years we are still hoping against hope to have a parking and to have a completion certificate. Surely on our next trip we would like to visit your office. We have seen some extraordinary moves from you and your team. If you read this note, please depute your staff to this building ESSEL STAR at bikernakatte; you will see some unapproved apartment/s on the roof side. God bless

Mayor Madam kindly note that builder pay to get the completion certificate although it’s not completed. A special squad from builders association along with CREDAI and MUDA should inspect buildings constructed and see if it is as per norms. Again builders make illegal penthouse and duplex Apartments and register for low value. Hope this is an eye-opener to you. Buildings have no access for fire services to enter. Why give licences without inspection of property? Commercial buildings constructed near the main road have no proper parking and you yourself can see that the tax payers don’t have a proper footpath because of these unwanted concrete roads. • From Thilu Bhargava on Seek deep within your inner self and magnify the many colorful layers...

Hi violet, thank you for posting Captured Moments with the beautiful pic. Of a peacock standing in all its splendour amidst serenity of greenery. Thanks for the beautiful words. Though simple it was captivating. Watching it gave me some respite from this humdrum world. I was lost admiring the serene beauty of the Nature. For a brief moment I got absorbed experiencing the solitude of the Nature. It also reminded me a few lines from Wordsworth so sonnet The world is too much with us late and soon getting &spending we lay waste our power We have given our hearts away a so did boon, This sea that bares its bosom to the moon for this & every thing we are out out of tune…it moves us not….. Thanks. Hope to see many more captured moments. God Bless Thilu Bhargava, Ontario,Canada

  • From Original R.Pai on 'If Found Cops Disrespected Quran was True, Take Stern Action '- MLA JR Lobo

I write this in pain as a person who initially supported Mr.Lobo – I thought he was a honest man. But he has turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments. Over the years, he has shown his true colors. His complete failure to stay above religion-based politics and reluctance to participate in good social programs (example: Swachcha mangaluru) have totally exposed his darker side. Here is a situation where Police were raiding a murder suspect’s house and Mr.Lobo is worried about a religious book and how it was handled? Seriously? What kind of elected rep is this guy? Does he want Sharia laws of blasphemy in India? Mark my words- this is not going to end well. The out-of-control minority appeasement will only result in more right-wing elements in Hindu society. Religious bigots from both minority and hindu community are a big threat to true secular society. It’s extremely disappointing to see both politics and media filled with cowards who are not willing to speak the truth.

Mr Alfie, I have installed a’ NO PARKING’ Board at the junction of Kambla Road -Kadri Road, opposite to Bharath Beedi Office. I have installed it at the request of East Traffic Inspector Mr Suresh. A MCC Contractor has removed this board and discarded it and installed MAPS College Board on that spot. I have done this for the benefit of the Public and I lost the respect in this regard along with expenses from my pocket.

Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.St Mother Teresa. St Aloysius is undoubtedly one of the best educational institutions in Mangalore, which imparts value based education to the students who enters the portals of the college. It believes wholeheardly in enlightighting the youth and envisions them as crucial to the overall development of India. The CAUSE team of St Aloysius Pu College joins hand to uphold the shared values of the institution- competence commitment, compassion , conscience, social responsibility and love of fellow human beings that would help us to create a better future. It is the immense support and collaborative efforts of CAUSE team to put up stupendous and extravaganza performance .The musicians and graceful dancers set the stage on fire with their majestic and flawless performance. . There was unquenching desire among the students to help the destitute, downtrodden and marginalised people of Mangalore. Through their performance, raising funds, selling hand made items and creating awareness among the public spoke volumes of social responsibility and love of fellow human beings.it is indeed privileged to witness today’s youth ablaze with a purpose to become beacon of hope to the needy people of mangalore. I appreciate commendable work done by the students of St Aloysius Pu college under the leadership and guidance of the Principal andthe members of the CAUSE team. I urge everyone to join their hands to support the poor people of mangalore and make our nation a better place to live.

  • From Rob Stan on We need Swimming Pool, Let's find a solution - MLA Lobo during EMUHS protest meet

I would recommend a smaller size swimming pool with 8ft deep at one end, 3-3.5 ft deep at the other end and 4.5 ft deep in the middle. I have used a Olympic size swimming pool earlier and it’s not that useful except for just swimming from one end to the other. The smaller size 8ft deep swimming pool which I’m using right now is more fun and good for diving and swimming to the shallow end. Right now, after swimming for almost 3 years in a small size swimming pool, I can dive and swim under water to the full length of the pool & make a u turn, flip over without stopping and float and come back to the deep end.

It is very pleasing and smoothening to read the article about the development in a place called “Emmekere” that we have never seen. It is interesting to see the overwhelming enthusiasm of the native people and their desire to group together and develop various sports related activities including the creation of a small swimming pool. Having been fully familiarized with the creation of a swimming pool, this is indeed a fine investment, but we strongly recommend that initially try and construct a small size swimming pool, if desired, and learn and earn all the required knowledge and technology essential not only for the construction of a swimming pool but also maintenance and upkeep of a swimming pool. There may appear plenty of monsoon water during the season, and there may be plenty of underground water reservoir in a place called “Emmekere”, but the preservation and treatment of water is of paramount importance so that there could be many other preferred uses of precious water availability. Besides, for a tropical climate of Mangalore, a swimming pool can only be used for few weeks of the year, whereas the rest of the time the reservoir of water in the swimming pool will remain cold and will be difficult to or swim in cool waters unless the water is heated and it is further expensive. The maintenance of pool water and purification of water is an expensive proposition, and the utilization of stagnant water will obviously turn green soon, and will be not hygienic for use. Water treatment with proper technology requires even power and everything to maintain the water will remain expensive and uneconomical to Mangalore. Money can be used for better use. Please therefore look for a small size swimming pool, if that is desired feasible. Instead utilize the available space and money for various indoor as well as outdoor sports facilities including covered Basket Ball courts, outdoor Tennis Courts, and if desired even a small mini size baseball field or a softball place that could be used for most of the time of the year. Utilization of precious monsoon waters have so many useful devices. If possible, create a nice water tank reservoir so that you can utilize the additional water for a nice garden or park facilities where people of all ages, and all classes, can come and relax with their families and friends and have a nice outdoor fun for most of the year than merely taking a glimpse of a stagnant swimming pool where the precious water need be maintained at all times. According to our humble experience, therefore, a large size of swimming pool on an international scale should be the last one on the list of priorities. That is only our personal opinion which we would like to share with the people of “Emmekere”. Thank you very much.
