Pathetic and disgusting to see what goes on in our own town! God knows what else goes on there. As the report points out, there were rumors and earlier reports on drugs, mobile phones and other things being supplied to inmates. This is impossible without direct involvement/approval by higher officials. Looking at total silence by our elected reps, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are also getting a nice ‘incentive’ for not looking into this issue. Good reporting and keep it up.

Saudi Arabia due to the highly plunged oil price is now trying to generate revenue and one of the idea is to improve tourism. If Saudi Arabia thinks that tourists are going to flock there due to advertisement, it will not work; until the too fundamental religious outfit is not removed from the whole nation, that will not be a fertile ground.

“They have a odd habit of urinating in sand castles and looking at your faces while you are eating” – Author Odd habit? How else dogs are supposed to behave? I’m quite disappointed by the tone of this report and most of the comments above. True dog lovers (or any animal lover) will not take this approach towards stray dogs or any other stray animals. These poor animals are entirely the creation of our own people. The so-called ‘dog owners’ silently dump the unwanted puppies in remote corners of our cities. They grow up, breed and more puppies. Our ‘dog lovers’ are not interested in rescuing puppies born to stray dogs and sending them for adoption by responsible individuals. Moreover, the uncollected garbage and food items all over the city are the main source of food for these stray dogs. Why blame them for our failure? What next? Advocate culling these poor dogs? I guess only in India ‘dog lovers’ and ‘pet owners’ can have this kind of cold attitude towards poor animals.

hi sharath & shalini i really do agree with you points. However please tell me heave you guys made any effort in helping to control the dog population in town we are the reason for this menace now. people buy the dogs n once its sick or old they leave it on streets which causes the increase in dog population every body comments about the problem but no one is ready to come forward n help… its not only the duty on animal lovers to come up with the solution even people can come up with the solution n give you suggestion rather than just complaining about the dog problem. Animal care trust is doing wonderful job on vaccinating the stray dogs in society however its not easy for them to cover up all the places in town i guess people can come forward & volunteer n help the society, coming to people saying about the dog problem in tourist places. Have you been to tannirbavi or Panambur beach early morning have you seen those places, its filled with people with people doing natures call in the beach early morning right next to the waves its so disgusting n people tel dogs are menace

  • From Shalini M S-Kudla on Not Just Humans, DC should Also Ban Stray dogs on Beaches FOREVER!

Beaches are a tourist destination-which should be free of any animals- go to Goa beaches you have cows and stray dogs more than Mangalore beaches- in order to avoid all these controversies why cant the beach authorities prevent any stray animals on the beach–because beaches are visited by people who love pet animals, and also who are scared or what you call it, allergic to animals. Nothing less- nothing more. I agree with the author’s perspective on this matter.

Forget about beaches in Mangalore- Just come to Kankanady area, there are over 25 plus dogs- and as a good Samaritan I feed these dogs- where are the members of PETA or Animal Trust- who are only in theory but not practicals? I loe dogs but there should be a limit to these stray dogs in Mangalore. People who are scared of dogs are worried to walk on rods- any answer for this from Animal lover activists? Come up with an pro[per solution to this dog menace.

  • From Devika on Seniors, Think Twice Before Signing WILL-You Could Be on Streets?

It’s very good Article. yes, this is the need of the hour. Parents should be given Love, respect, independence, space and so on… by the children. They are the people because of whom, we are on this Earth. They have struggled every single bit for us and to brighten our life. If my mother has kept me safe in her womb, my father has kept me safe in his brain and heart. whatever I give it to my parents its not enough, I cannot say proudly that i have given something its my sole duty and responsibility to give anything and everything and anyhow is possible. I have my biological parents and adopted (Foster) parents, Out of Four people i have only my biological mother with me all the other three are dead, but i love them, everyday i remeber them, I have not seen God in my life but i feel they are the four people who are the differant forms of gods in my life. I take care of my mother as like she is queen in the house because when I was the child she has taken care of me like queen hence I don’t want to miss that chance to take care of her like Quen. Thanks god for sending those four people in my life as my goddess and god. If anything i can help/do in this mission of taking care of senior people i ll be always ready. Mangalorean.com has my mail ID please contact me, i ll be always ready.

When people struggle they will cry. Suppose if NHAI want to build ring road, do the public ready to give their land for that, no…no. Almost traffic jams are caused due to nuisance of public. Mangalore drivers are one of the worst behavioral drivers in India. Along with that improper construction of roads exaggerates the problems. People need to find some alternative roads when they know its a routine trouble at that sight.

Mr Alfie,Smart City is gradually becoming death City. Look at the road surfaces with Pot Holes and gravel spilled over road surface. Here is what happened to me. I came from Adyar Padau to Light House, along with my worker. Manoor road is a nightmare. It took me 30 minutes to reach from Neermarga to Kannur. It took almost an hour from Kannur to Garodi There was black top work near Mahaveera Circle. So it took more than 30 minutes from Garodi to Mahaveera Circle. Then came Karavali Circle and Bendoorwell Circle with Traffic Jam which took almost 30 minutes there. Then came Jyothi Circle problem. So by the time I reached Light House area,I lost almost 2 hours of my time. Imagine the cost of Petrol and I ended Up paying the worker for 2 hours wages. Smart City. I totally agree with u Lallu, Hey Arun with your written communication I can understand that u are well educated, then why you need their property? be on your own, try to stand on your own leg, show them what you can do in your life. Don’t complain about them, They are the people who strived for you when you were a kid, teenager and adolescent, how can you forget that? I am sure there is something which made some misunderstanding between you and them sort it out with them, make them genuinely believe you. They are parents and they will always forgive their children, I don’t say that you are totally wrong, and they are right, but being educated and your existence in the earth itself because of them then you can bend somewhat. Try Arun it is possible, i have seen people going through that. Finally whom you have to bend its only your own parentsssss…

I agree to it that educated children are doing this to their elderly parents. but my case is different. my parents were working abroad and have their own house and good income to take care of themselves. Here my parents are greed for wealth and do not care about the son as my sisters are well settled of in the US. I am married and in India and hardly able to manage my expenses. In spite of trying give them whatever I could, my parents gave false complaints in the police station and threw me out of their house. My father cheated and robbed from me a property which my grandmother gave me.

It’s good that your parents are good and have enough wealth till their lifetime.. that is you don’t have to take a tension anyway they can look after themselves. How many aged women had fallen prey to the paying guest accommodation syndrome. They allow students or professionals to share their house with them for support or for money and at the end of the day get duped by these people. Sometimes the elderly are made to sign papers without knowing what is the content and loose their property. There are some scrupulous builders and real estate agents who really cheat the elderly by initially helping them material wise and financially and finally take their signatures on papers and transfer or sell their property. Some people dump them in old age home and few ditch them after all the transactions are finished. Trust is the basic need for survival . Once trust is lost then everything is lost

I wholeheartedly support the project and the concept. Although this project may not be about fish farming, I have been great believer in fish farming. Fish farming must be taken up in a big way in the coastal districts. It can provide good revenue. Of course, with anything connected to farming, fish too can be affected by diseases. So, I suppose people must obtain sufficient training in how to deal with all the pros and cons of fish farming. I do not know if I would agree with the statement of the minister: “Fish is 100% pure without pesticides”. Much fish has disappeared from local steams in Mangalore due to the over-use of pesticides. The large quantities used in farming most likely to kill the fish. Fish consumes anything that is available to them including metals in water, discharged from the factories. The Minamata case is a well-known case.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Leaf Eating Insect Attacking Coconut Trees in Kudla and USA?

Coconut Trees are as important as coconuts. Without the trees we shall be deprived of the coconuts sooner or later. The Government should have constant surveillance on all these kinds of diseases that can impact our coconut crops and the coconut trees themselves might disappear sooner or later. The Research and Development on all Agriculture needs and wants requires timely surveillance and research from the Government. Whether it is Coffee Plantation or Tea Plantation; whether it is Coconut or cashews, or even mangoes, we as people depend on the Government for their constant surveillance and support. Today, India is so much advanced in the drone technology, they should send those drones all over the coconut farms and see where exists any kind of insects that can destroy our coconut trees. Drones can be sent over the house roofs even for any kind of tile cracks that can cause leaks. People have to spend some money for subsidizing these new technologies. There is no free lunch any more. People are all interested in saving money, and even hiding money, when that money should be equally spent on our basic needs of life, which involves Research and Development. Please, Mr. Government save our coconut trees, mango trees and cashew trees in addition to all the trees. The green farmland is essential for us because without agriculture we have a critical future ahead of us.

How is this different from Bhajarang Dala or Sri Raama sene riding illegal activities? How is this different from ‘moral policing’? The hypocrisy of media and many readers is troubling. Why are local MLAs not cooperating with her? Congress is in power at State level and city level, right? Where is the ‘beautification’ MLA? It is extremely sad to note the disaster for the farmers. It has been my observation that the various Government bodies meant for the agriculture sector are peopled by those from non-agricultural backgrounds, and as such have neither an interest in looking after the farmers nor any proactive approach to tackle any diseases affecting the flora and fauna. In some countries the Governments have very serious interest in protecting the agricultural sector. And they should! Because a significant problem with the food production and have serious consequences on the economy. With the problem at hand, there is a good chance the coconut oil will end up costing three times as much in the near future.

If you believe in God and creation I would say God created all genders, because it is a natural biological phenomenon. It’s just that religious heads don’t accept it and any religious head’s opinions are not synonymous to that of God’s. Our religious texts don’t mention the ‘other gender’ as you call it because it’s written by humans who were perhaps ignorant or just didn’t want to mention it. If you look up Indian history you will see that transgenders were highly respected and were even worshipped in some cases. The Taboo against the LGBT community is by the Westerns. – Jennifer Hanna Charles

Dear Original R. Pai: What is wrong with you? Did I write anything to offend the Hindus? You may be suffering with the chronic amnesia. Who were at the front row of the Ratha Yatra invented by Advani? Uma Bharati was at the front row. What was the outcome of the Ayodhya episode? Did any of the Radha leaders had to shed a drop of blood? How many Hindus and Muslims have lost their lives, how many widows and orphans? I did compliment Swamiji for conducting the Iftar party for the Muslims as a bridge building events, but all on a sudden, after having meeting with the M.P. Maharaj from U.P. , Swamiji brought the subject of Ram temple. Build the Temple or Mosque peacefully without shedding blood of the innocent people of both Hindus and Muslims. Pai, I grew up with Hindus and washed their wounds, we all loved like one family. But, now the north Indian political virus through using the Hindu religion has already created extreme polarization in the nation. One day, the peace loving Hindus will wake up to stop this evil spirit of fight and lynching.

The holy cow worship has totally polarized the nation, has taken away the high protean low priced meal from the table of millions of people in India, especially the minorities which is totally a minority persecution. Another bombshell is creating massive unemployment related to the meat and leather industry in which all religious people are involved. This is nothing but a national insanity undertaken by the totally irrational autocratic rulers of India. Watch for the wandering bone and skin cows flooding the streets and roads-road accidents-dead cows. Chances are, there might be a national epidemic related to this cow mother worship catching everybody’s attention.

Based on media reports, this guy was a low profile, harmless person whose only crime was the association with RSS. Clearly, the killers were trying to settle score for the recent killing of one Ashraff in the same region. For those who know the area – kalladka, goodinabali (near Paane mangalore), melkar, kannur, pharangipete – all these areas on highway are very well-known for trouble making community.

“he will go and peck the cheeks of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, pseudo preacher, Mirwaiz Umair Farooq, Yasin Malik, Shabbir Shah, Naeem Khan and the ilk. I do not know if he is pecking somewhere else too.” – Writes Nelson Lewis on one shameless Mani Shankar Ayyar from Congress party. Once again, your observations and comments are spot on. I don’t think many Indians are aware of the amount of damage done by likes of Mani Shankar Ayyar, Salmaan Khurshid and parties like Congress and CPI. I strongly believe that they are anti-India. Otherwise, why would anyone push Indian govt to hold talks with Kashmiri terrorists who openly support Pakistan and call for Islamic Caliphate in entire India? It’s one thing to play politics when it comes to domestic things. But it’s very dangerous to play politics when it come to our own country’s survival. This is not just in India. Recently, Canada issued an apology and paid $10.5 million dollars to a convicted Al-Qaeda terrorist who had confessed to killing an American Soldier in Afghanistan. Just a few days ago, a Muslim activist here in US openly called for ‘Jihaad’ against Donald Trump and asked her community to do only one thing – that is, please Allah. Not American constitution, but her god! I’m very concerned and disappointed by the utter failure of Liberal/Secular parties all over the world. I personally believe in secular, progressive, humanist society. Unfortunately the current secular/liberal political parties have totally lost their ways and gone down the wrong path. The same thing goes with media and journalism. People are getting sick and tired of the double games played by our media/journalists. It’s okay to publish pictures of Lord Raama, Krishna, Budhdha or Jesus Christ. But, a simple picture of a prophet from a different religion can cause deaths and violence?? Can you believe this nonsense? How come our media act like cowards? Why can’t they unite and oppose these blasphemy laws in a democracy?? Very disappointing. If the same trend continues, I see very bad things happen in future. Patience will run out, populism will spin out of control and democratic values may face severe challenges. Note: I haven’t see Praveena Pinto, Shaikh or Advocate BN Pai in a long time. It’s strange that all three have disappeared. Well, I hope that they are all doing good and healthy.

  • From Nelson Lewis on Anchi Tule Inchi Tule, St Aloysius Rd Tule! Now Muslims Want 'SAC Rd' Renamed 'Idgah Road?'

Mr. Original R. Pai, Thanks for your speedy response and read your views. Yes, Rahul Gandhi, is the best child artist in India and you should listen and hear the speeches he makes in the Parliament. He is pathetic and makes a fool of himself and provides entertainment to other parliamentarians. Rahul Gandhi’s only right to be in politics is that he is the member of the dynasty and great grandson and grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, respectively. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi are heading the Congress and aided in this direction by members who are, at best, sycophants and flunkies. They sing praises of the dynasty and, in return, are allowed to make hay while the sun shines. If you watch “Times Now” beamed daily at 09.00 p.m., there is a good chance that you may come across a panelist, Alimuddin Khan. Tman is an unashamed sycophant of the dynasty and there is a similar character among Roman Catholics in Mangalore, who by singing praises of the dynasty has buttered his bread. Moreover, I would like to describe turncoats and traitors like Mani Shankar Aiyar, Sitaram Yechury, Sandeep Dixit (the son of Delhi’s ex-Minister who, as per print media, had 31 air-conditioners in her official residence), Sudheendra Kulkarni, Mehbooba Mufti, Farooq and Omar Abdulla and others like them, simply as QUISLINGS. Characters like Mani Shankar Aiyar, when caught by the media photographers in the acts of coddling Syed Ali Shah Geelani and the ilk, have been looks of traitors caught in their birth suits. Mani Shankar Aiyar is out-of-power and is like a kadi-pata leaf that has outlived its purpose and needs to be chucked off. Therefore, he will go and peck the cheeks of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, pseudo preacher, Mirwaiz Umair Farooq, Yasin Malik, Shabbir Shah, Naeem Khan and the ilk. I do not know if he is pecking somewhere else too. Naeem Khan’s wife ran away from India Today’s panel discussions when, to her utter horror and surprise, her husband was shown frankly admitting about accepting money in millions from Pakistan or anyone for that matter to burn schools, colleges and public properties. She ran away with her tail between her legs. This was a very comical sight.

Nelson Lewis, I’ve been regularly reading your posts. Your views on China and Pakistan with may accurate historic references are something that I fully agree on. I couldn’t agree more with you on India-Israel friendship. India’s foreign policy towards was always hijacked by one particular community (you know who I am talking about). Nehru started the flawed policy by not recognizing and trying to block Israel in UN. India continued with this embarrassing anti-Israel policy for decades. Every Indian should be happy with recent Modi’s Israel visit. Unfortunately, as you have rightly pointed out, some political parties and individuals are busy playing the same old anti-Israel politics. By the way, your use of ‘quislings’ and ‘child artist’ is spot on! smiles…

Though communism has been virtually erased from the globe, I feel disheartened to see some fragmented Leftist parties strutting along to the Lok and Raj Sabhas and their government running the government in Kerala. The Leftist politicians are living in Cuckoo-land and make stupid comments. The Leftists have no relevance today and they should shut their shops and vanish or join some other parties and same applies to Congress, which has not revitalized, streamlined and revamped themselves. Mother and son are running the affairs of Congress which will, certainly, sound a death knell for them.

Original R. Pai, Nice to read your post, though I am not commenting on the same as it does not concern me. How are you and how is your family? Mr. Narendra Modi has just completed his three days visit to Israel which, as far as I am concerned, is a thumping success. He was accorded a reception and welcome only accorded to the Pope and the America President. Both the countries have signed many agreements in fields like defence, intelligence, agriculture, water management, solar energy, etc. He also met the Israeli Jews (of Indian origin) and Israelis working there. d In India, the Congress, the Leftists and Quislings like Sitaram Yechury, Prakash Karat and others like D. Raja, Sandeep Dixit, A. Singhvi, Digvijay Singh, child artist, Rahul Gandhi, A. Owaissi, Baptists and others are unhappy. Well, Mr. Modi did a good thing by not visiting Mr. Mahmood Abbas, because they have nothing to offer us, but they only accept money. Palestinians were the first one to start air hijackingg.

I am not sure that Mr Lobo or Mr D Souza are responsible. Even if they were, no one can question the right for stay and legal enquiry. We all know it as Light house hill road. The road in Mulki can be named after the banking icon. I don’t remember Mr Shetty’s contributions to the community except that he was responsible for growth of the bank. Has Vijaya Bank contributed to MCC to get this name for that road? What about iconic KMC there? Can we have the road renamed TMA Pai road by the way? I don’t think it matters. What about Lobo Prabhu road? At least that would make their family happy. May be after few years they will rename it as Mithun Rai road, the new youth icon in Mangalore. Jai renaming.

Once again, congratulations to St Aloysius and its supporters for turning this into a religious controversy by repeatedly bringing up religion in every step. They could have taken legal route to challenge the decision. Instead, they chose to play religious card. Very unfortunate. This kind of controversy always helps political parties. Congress can further consolidate minority ‘vote bank’ using this incident while BJP can do the same for hindoo votes.

“Now all these controversies from three communities- Christian, Hindus and Muslims on renaming…” – Author. This is very unfair to Hindoo community. Why does the author view one Vijaya Bank as ‘Hindoo’ community? Did Vijaya bank say that they were doing it on behalf of Hindoo community. On the other hand, St Aloysius College and its supporters are playing religious card ever since beginning of this controversy. This shows how minorities begin the religious tension and then turn around to blame Hindoo community. Very unfortunate to see this mindset even in 2017.

May Fiona’s soul rest in peace. Such a loss of life due to parents’ negligence of allowing children to ride a bicycle on the main road The bus driver too is at fault, for having hit her – as all vehicles must maintain a safe distance to brake in time in any unforeseen emergency inside villages as there are always people walking, cows wandering, and children playing or crossing. However, the village roads in Karnataka are very narrow and full of pot holes, and the local drivers of these private buses are as bad too in their ethics and driving skills.

Let’s maintain peace and show the tolerance to other community. its good opportunity to prove that minority community is not always the oppressor.

The disputed road is of historic significance not just to Mangalore but to entire India. The hill was always ‘Bavuta Gudde’ for the locals. The book ” History and Archaeology of Dakshina Kannada” published by the Department of Archaeology in 2007 throws some light on Bavutagudde ” 3,000-member group led by Puttabasappa alias Kalyana Swamy of Shanivarasanthe, Kedambadi Rame Gowda of Sullia and Banga Arasa of Bangawadi waged a war against the British in Bantwal and Mangalore in March, 1837. They won both Bantwal and Mangalore on April 5, 1837, and released prisoners from Mangalore prison. They set fire to the houses of British in Mangalore and hoisted the flag of Kodagu at Light House Hill. ” It was a proud moment in Indian history. To commemorate that the road should be named as ‘Bavutagudde Gudde road’ or ‘Kattu Kaayi road’ ( Because this rebellion was famous as ‘Kalyanappa a Kattukaayi’

  • From K.NAVEENCHANDRA SHETTY, MIT, CISA IS Auditor on An open letter to Mr Hanumanth Kamath

Dear Sumith, thought we haven’t met its nice meeting now as Aloysians. you have nicely elicited certain facts about St.Aloysius College and why shouldn’t it retain the Plaque on the road pointing to St.Aloysius College. I am very nostalgic as much as you are about this college because i studied here from 1968/1969 on wards. Even i had a great privilege of sharing the bench with a modest person like DeviPrasad Shetty(then) and eminent Dr.Devi Shetty(now) above all a great human being. for me studying at St.Aloysius College was something like studying in London those days. it was considered the ‘Oxford’ of Mangalore. whatever i am today is because of this great Institution. Now coming to your open letter to Mr.Kamath, i would like to bring out certain facts in the form of questions which i would have expected from a thoroughbred Aloysians like you. they are 1. Did you ever visit St.Aloysius College Chappel and i am sure you did, then you seemed to have forgotten some important message out there. I used to go As a boy and sit for hours irrespective of my allegiance to my faith. The Idol of ‘Jesus’ and the Aura is quite different there. one would forget the faith he or she belongs to and in total peace . Jesus seems to be taking everything in his stride and still smiling unmindful of the happenings. Because He stands tall and this is the cardinal principle St.Aloysius College derives from. 2. Does St.Aloysius College need any address or does the location need to be guided or a plaque on the road pointing towards?. it stands tall . its a standing iconic monument which was there, which is there and which will be there for at least another couple of hundred years. To draw an analogy, Mt.Everest does’nt need an Address or direct to scale. its there to be revered for years to come. St.Aloysius College is a temple of learning so let us keep it that way. 3. your comparison between St.Aloysius and Mr.Sundar Ram Shetty is unjustified for a simple reason that you have not given this great man his due. you said St.Aloysius is an ‘Institution’ .you are right. it would have been gratifying if you also said this about Mr.Sundar Ram Shetty. Mr.Sundar Ram Shetty is also an ‘Institution’ too. Everybody knows that Mr.Sundar Ram Shetty was instrumental to what is M/S.Vijaya Bank is today. To tell you sincerely am not batting for Mr.Sundar Ram Shetty or for that ‘Road’ being named. All i am saying is that while This ‘Alma Mater’ gave ‘Education’ to thousands, please also realise and remember the fact that Mr.Sundar Ram Shetty had kept the ‘Home’ Flame of so many households burning when they looked upon him as a last resort. lets not belittle his achievements. I don’t have any allegiance to any particular political outfit or for those said by Mr.Kamath atleast when i wrote this. All I am saying is that lets not get carried away and lets not politicize this. 4. As a last but one point, lets be little accommodative. You now it very well that A Colossus like St.Aloysius College does not need any name board on the road. people know it where it is. But a giant like Mr.Sundar Ram Shetty who is mostly remembered by older generation and the retired staff of M/S.Vijaya Bank needs an introduction to our younger generation needs a memorial in his name. Again i am not interested in a particular lane upper or lower as you put it 5. Lastly i still remember as also you are i bet that St.Aloysius College had an efficient non partial Administration in the 1960’s. these days the way they react to small and trivial matters proves otherwise. lets uphold the spirit of education bowing to none Thank you.

With due respect to all, I think Aloysius College is the main reason for making Mangaluru what it is today by providing quality education to about a million students in its 137-year-old history and is known throughout the world. Comparing Mount Everest to Hat Hill doesn’t make any sense. But other reasons like naming the road to MSS road because of the government order and their efforts since many years, college authorite=ies sleeping until the last movement etc are valied. Frankly speaking, myself, my friends or people with whom I have inquired have never heard of MSS until this issue has popped up. Someone here said he is “God and saviour of many poor and drown trodden families”. Kindly provide the figures “many” is how many? so that we all can get a clear picture of his good work and recognise MSS for that.

Vijaya Bank was founded in 23rd October 1931 by late Shri A.B.Shetty. Shri Sundaram Shetty takes credit for merging all tiny banks. And not being founder. I think Vijaya Bank hates mangalore and Mangaloreans if not why they had to move to headquarters to Bangalore? You don’t want to show you started here and you belong here? You want to make full mangalore yours by naming all the roads leading to Aloysius in your name? Please give some space to other 6 nationalised banks too which stated in DK to have their identity and show they belong to mangalore. Just by giving political colour you can hide all these facts and loopholes? The College wouldn’t have gone to JR Lobo or any other MLA /MLC if they had heard lakhs of cries of students, staff and Alumni of the college. Even you are proving it by catching some political head and asking him to give political statement so that he can also gain some publicity by adding weight to your incomparable name for the road.

Aloysius College which has 137 years history…. has it parted education freely? no! Mr. Sundaram Shetty prvided livelyhood to many people. Providing education for a fee is onething. But providing livelyhood to poor is great . Any fool can understand it. Secondly never in the history of this institution letter head the road was mentioned with its name- it was either light house hill road or bavuta gudde road.. what right do this institution have to object the renaming of the road in the name MR. Sundararam Shetty ? There is a clear religious bias appafrent here!

Probably you were born 10 to 15 years ago and therefore too young and too immature to have the knowledge of Sundarram Shetty and his service to the people of South kanara. He was the son of soil, not a migrant nor convert and deserves respect. Time goes on and things change for the better, but that does not diminish the accomplishments of the past. Mr. Shetty was not your pope, but for locals he was God and savior of many poor and drown trodden families.

Where is the comparison of Mr. Sundaram Shetty to an institution like St. Aloysius College which has 137 years history and has shaped the future of hundreds of thousands of students in Mangalore. Is this a comparison? Are you saying that Mr. Shetty provided more jobs than the students who have passed out of St. Aloysius? Did the MCC consult with the management of St. Aloysius College before deciding to change the name? St. Aloysius College is an educational institution and students are at the core of this institution. So if students do not protest, whom do you expect to come forward to defend this great institution that has shaped the future for them. What was the reason this particular road was used for renaming when Vijaya Bank did not even start anywhere on this road? Why did such a prestigious bank move its Head Quarters to Bangalore if it had so much love for Mangalore and Mr. Shetty? If Mr. Sundaram Shetty would have been alive today, you think he would have consent to renaming a road that stood after a great institution like St. Aloysius into his personal name. Stop politics and analyze the true impact of such decisions.

The only people who’re anti-GST in India appear to be those who have long benefited from corrupt, dishonest sales practices (think the smoke and mirrors ‘Local Taxes Extra’ regime, which was a handy black money generator at the retail level) and those who were aligned to the inspector raj. GST rollout will prove to be one of the defining moments in India’s transition into a transparent world class economy. One country one tax is something which should have happened 20, 30, 40 years ago. I know it’s unlikely to be perfect on Day One. But all criticism must be rational and based on economics, not politics as is unfortunately the case with certain media outlets in India. Their casuistry against GST defies all logic.

If bull is vehicle engine and cart is commuters/goods, do you agree that we have been carrying and moving the bullockcart on wheels, since 200 years by imported fuel force? Do we really need to have so many tiny vehicles on roads which neither meet the increasing transport demand nor allow the traffic to move smoothly? Can we use massive weight of commuters and goods on wheels as a pushing force, instead of carrying the burden like infants? I am grateful to Mangalorean.com for brilliantly presenting and publishing the accumulation of my thoughts and views since last three decades. All that I was really looking for was: Is this a new invention? If so, how does it work? After going through the article I am not too sure if the the force required to move the ‘bullock cart’ is gravity or the cycling effort. If it is the latter is that not how the cycle-rikshaws work? Perhaps I need to go through the super long article a couple of times to figure out what is going on. Until them I guess I will use my two legs to move from point A to B. And then take a bus.

St Aloysius Institution, Mangaluru which began as a small institution serving a few hundred students for the last 137 years, has today grown into a complex educational enterprise, with various units scattered all over two sprawling campuses, where more than 14,000 students, boys and girls pursue their studies in various disciplines. St Aloysius Institutions seek to establish a congenial environment in which those of diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs can participate in the community, in the spirit of co- operation and mutual respect. While the purpose of education at SAC is that every student who passes the portals of this College learns to attain fullness of life not merely by amassing information, but also by transforming into persons with concern and commitment to the marginalized of our society. Proud to be a Alumni of this great institution. Thank you Jesuit Fathers for your education, training and love.

Dear Mayor Kavitha, your role as a Mayor is witnessed with great admiration from a distance. We have been proud to show to dozens of Americans that we not only have a capable and dedicated Mayor of Mangalore, but also a charming and intelligent lady, and you have proven all of the above positive attributes. Mangalore has always been known as an exemplary City with all the secular values and characteristics. Our Educational values and qualities of Mangalore have proven to the world that we are now ready to be known as one of the “Smart Cities” of Mangalore. As a capable Mayor, when issues arise for re-naming an established 137-year-old road is not a fair deal. You are too good and smart to make a swift decision, and give one of the roads in Mulki or elsewhere in the name of Mulky Sunderaman. Why create unnecessary ill-feelings in a City that is known for its smartness and uprightness. Why create an unwanted controversy amongst people who have so much of attachment and respect towards St Aloysius College which has done so much for students of all religions and backgrounds and continue to dedicate so much for the betterment of the future. We want you, dear Mayor Kavitha, stand for your values and determinations and compromise with the other parties to give them any other road anywhere in and around Mangalore than re-naming the road that has stood so vibrantly for 137 years. Once again, we have great faith in you from a distance, and we know that you will not forsake your ideas and ideals for the progress and prosperity of Mangalore.

It would be best to list all the benefits and conditions laid out to avail all the benefits that the present government and Mr. Ivan D’souza are talking about, and put up on the Notice Boards in English and Kannada of all Churches in Karnataka. As of now, nobody is really aware of any such benefits, as the priests keep on asking money for each and every project, the latest being demolishing old churches and constructing large churches, for housing people with no proper houses, for education, etc.

  • From Confused Desi on A Aloysian, Always an Aloysian! Raise Your Voice Against Renaming SAC Road

I have great regard for various educational institutes. Some of them provide education for love, and some of them do it for love of some money. I am not sure which category this particular institute belongs. I have read a few articles in the media regarding the disappointment of the owners, staff and students of the institute when they came across the news that the stretch of road adjacent to the institute is getting a new name. This article suggests there would a “massive protest” and other attention-grabbing actions. Hopefully no one gets hurt. But what I am really confused about are the following points: 1. How many times (at least since Independence) did the road OFFICIALLY get named/renamed? 2. Was the road ever OFFICIALLY named after the institute? If yes, when exactly, and in what cicumstances? 3. If anyone/everyone can protest – which is a form of bullying – why do we need elected representatives? 4. The article states “It WAS and ALWAYS will be St Aloysius College Road”. In actual fact, for most people it was Bavuta Gudda for many decades, while for some it was Idgah Hill road, and (so far as I believe) OFFICIALLY Lighthouse Hill Road. It was hardly ever called by the name the institute! So my request to the author of the article to clarify my questions, if possible.

Madam Richi, You are deviating the topic. Even I’m obliged as I am one of the staff of the college. I have worked in couple of MNCs before taking up teaching as my profession. Just check the new appointed teachers pay scale of the college, its much above all the other colleges of mangalore and higher than the pay received by a Fresher in any industry anywhere in the country (exceptions always prevail) . Are you regretting about the pea nuts that you are getting? I doubt u being the alumni of the college. Because None who has walked out of the college has gone unsatisfied and always feels proud wen the talk of Aloysius is on. Kindly check the records of the college regarding the qualifications of the staff. Majority of the staff are Qualified as per the rules and regulations set by UGC. May not be as per ur criteria. College getting ‘star status’ in the academic year 2016-17 (remember only 16 colleges in entire country have this honour), 44th ranking out of 45,000+ colleges in NIRF ( MHRD, Govt of India. NOT PAID RANKING AS MOST OF THE COLLEGES DO) listed 2nd in the state. Is it past glory? The more old SAC, the more efficient it is. If u doubt a bit the capacity of the management just pause for a moment and think of XLRI, Loyola College, St. Joseph’s. It’s the same people who run it. 🙂 Just come over to SAC, take a campus tour interact with intellectual giants, get to know things. Kindly done blabber half cooked knowledge. And kindly support the cause because SAC has the capacity of creating hundreds of bankers. And since SAC is here from 137 years u can speak these words in English, we are the first Literate district, Mangalore is the best City to live in the nation. Just because Alsoyius doesn’t boasts about it and can’t give u legal written proof one can’t deny the fact that Aloysius is behind what mangalore is today. And for your kind information I am not writing this to get some more pea nut. All the best good luck. Kindly support the cause. Come to meet is for any help we have full time counsellors too 🙂 (none other college has as per as my knowledge)

Let’s talk sense : Was this Road Officially named after Aloysious or was it a ploy by putting the name on the side ? For a road to be named the same HAS to be passed by the corporation by a meeting of the corporators , The resolution and order and works order and cost of board concrete/ wood/ stone will appear in the books and expenses . If so they have a right for 3 years after which the corporation can change the name. There is no use enticing ignorant students into fighting your wrong battle .

  • From Nelson Lewis on 'It WAS and ALWAYS will be St Aloysius College Road'- Say Staff and Students

I am one of those in the minority who considers China as the most dangerous countries in the world and in comparison with the dragon, North Korea and Pakistan are much smaller nuisance, today. China cannot be trusted under any circumstances and, as far as I know, they have territorial disputes and bad relations with its neighbours and other countries. It is due to wrong interpretations of right of passage to other countries’ merchant fleets or naval vessels and also illlegal occupation of islands and isles. They have even constructed isles and islands and built military airfields, harbours and fortifications and keep flexing their muscles and bullying smaller countries. Apart from North Kore,a, China is the worst country when it comes to human rights and freedom. They have a completely muzzled press, a judiciary and police that are totally subservient to the government and people have no rights whatsoever. The Indian leftists, viz. to name a few, Sitaram Yechury, Prakash Karat, D. Raja, Sunil Chopra and other lackets, (including college students who proudly brag that they are leftists, without realizing what it actually is) who are, for all you know, on the payroll of China, will not utter a word. Has any one of them condemned the Chinese bullying tactics in Bhutan? Why not? Simply because these Leftists consider, “Blood is thicker than wate,” and how will they bite the hand that feeds it? Now China has raked up territorial disputes with Bhutan, a small, weak and a country that never gets involved in any troubles. It is high time, America and the developed countries of the world, see through the bluff and condemn China’s actions. It is also high time that American, Indian, Japanese and other countries’ navies do sustained patrolling in South China sea and other sea lanes to put an end to Chinese menace. China has had or had territorial and other disputes with Japan, Vietnam, Russia, Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries. It has encroached into and illegally occupied territories of many small countries, including Bhutan. It has completely gobbled up Tibet and, once CPEC is finalized, Pakistan will realize how true, all-weather friend is China. They will bring millions of mainland Chinese and resettle them in Baluchistan and Baluchis will be a minority in their own land. Pakistan will realize that CPEC will benefit China and destroy Pakistan and it will be too late to cry over their bad decision. I feel that the Chinese have paid heavy and big bribes to top Pakistani politicians and military brass who, once they retire, will leave Pakistan to settle down in Canada, United Kingdom, America or elsewhere, where they could sit down and enjoy their loot. There is a beautiful saying in English which is,”Money makes the mare go.” Pakistanis are very much used to going around with a begging bowl and a mongrel scavenging for food in a barbage bin leads a much respectable life than them.

What a beautiful message we are reading from a long distance to realize that our nobles Temples in Mangalore are on the verge of enabling Moslem prayers to be conducted, whenever required. This is the most beautiful message we are relishing from a long distance, and in return, offering a whisper of gratitude for all those that are instrumental in having this extraordinary privilege made possible. As we have always preached and publicly proclaimed in America, India is an unique nation, specially blessed by God with Peace and Harmony in spite of all our vast population of Hindus, Jains, Moslems, Buddhists, Christians, Sikhs and even Jews, and all the prevailing differences. “Where there is a Will there is always a Way to sort out our basic differences and enjoy all the God given blessings upon us”. There is no substitute for our mutual compromises on so many religious issues that are ancient and that are delicate. But we have been blessed with good Education, and many of us have gone to different Schools where we have sat together with so many other religions and have enjoyed the best of God given benefits. Thank you very much, Pejawar Temple for giving us the way to smile better with a sense of pride. May you be the role models for many other Institutions so that peace and unity will continue to prevail today and always in our Mother Nation.

The lid of the Chamber is bent and bouncing up when vehicle drives on it. This makes a huge Thunderous Noise as well as it is dangerous to Bikes with dip on the lid. So here is what I have done to get it repaired. It was almost like pouring Water on Rock where nothing grows I called 24×7 desk during day time and evening time. (5 Times) Met Commissioner Mr Nazeer and showed Him the picture ( 1 Time) Personally Met P.A. to Commissioner of City Mr Mohan(2 Times) Called P.A. to Commissioner of City Mr Mohan (9 Times) Called and requested Mayor for action (2 times) Met Mayor personally in Her Office and put forth request (1 Time) Called Mr Ganapathy Engineer as per instruction given by MCC (1 Time) Finally I met Mayor 1 week back in her office and reminded Her of problem. Do you think that the minority population of India are living in peace now? You may say ” that is our domestic matter”. According to your research, the foreign countries taught hatred; then why PM Modi is repeatedly traveling to those countries? Is it to change their sinful nature and to convert them as holy people? • From A. S. Mathew on 'I have followed my Dharma and hosted the Iftar programme' – Pejawar Swamiji

Swamiji Sri. Vishweshateertha did the right thing through sowing the seeds of harmony in the society now fully fractured by the new Government at New Delhi. The President of India invited the Cabinet Members for the Iftar party, but none of them showed up. This is the real picture of real national intolerance operating from New Delhi, and teaching the nation to follow that path to national anarchy.

“…narrates the clash of the Dravidian and Aryan civilizations…” – Report on a ‘historical’ TV drama. I’m hoping that they did their homework and consulted real historians before taking up on this subject. If past is any indication, our entertainment industry has miserably failed in adopting real historic, factual details in these productions. The focus always tends to be on ‘love story’ and ‘hero-defeating-villain’ themes. No wonder Indians tend to be one of the most illiterate people when it comes to their own heritage and history. Oh well…

  • From A. S. Mathew on Muslim Brethren celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitr with Great Devotion in Udupi District

I do respect the Islam religion, how the rich and poor sit on the floor worshiping, the equality and humility in worshiping GOD. A religion keeps true equality in worship and burial, the rich and the powerful can’t display their ego march in both cases; which declares the spiritual lesson that we are all equal before GOD. Choicest greetings at this holy season.

  • From Sujith Noronha on HELP! Traffic Jams near Schools a Nightmare to Motorists and Commuters

I was Surprised by Alfies’s write up on ‘Help Traffic Jams near Schools……..” . Me being at St. Theresa School doing Traffic duty for the last 2 years with helping parents and students during the peak hours and also being the member of the Parish Pastarol Council member of St. Sebastian Church from 4 years want to express the following. “Love thy neighbour”, this commandment is not only for the Priests and the Religious but also applicable for lay People Like Alfie. He saw the church compound and wrote something and attacked the Priests. Did he meet the Priest and speak to him before passing a judgement?. hence ” love your neighbour…. before you judge him ” is applicable to the writer also. Alfie does not seem to know the principles of church administration. Blaming a priest is easy. But there are various committees who work in the church administration. They need to decide on an issue and if some decision is taken it is always with consensus and approval of the Parish Pastoral Council. Hence priest alone cannot be blamed. It is not one time traffic jam. It is a regular feature. Who is the cause of it and whom is he blaming? Church Compound is not for public traffic. It is meant to people who come to the church for prayer. Moreover within the campus there is also a multipurpose hall which requires parking place anytime during the day. If the public are given space for parking where will the people who come to the church and hall park their vehicles?. I feel , Alfie could have inquired with the priests at Bendur Church and published the write up. He has clicked the photos on an occasion when the church compound was free and also with St. Theresa School. In order to be prejudiced he should also have uploaded a photo when there was a programme in the church and function at hall. His Advise to the parents of the students who live close to the Institution to make the students walk to the institution is highly appreciated. If the drivers or owners avoid bringing their vehicles early and parking it on the main road and side road then there will not be room for traffic jam.

Who runs this school? Applying mehandi, wearing bindi, flowers and bangles – these are all Indian traditions. I don’t see why some of these self-hating groups ban local traditions. Agreed – every private institution has full rights to impose whatever rules they want. However, there should be a few commonsense accommodations to acknowledge local tradition. Coming back to the story – I feel really bad for this lady who was cheated and forced to do this work. Who knows what other abuse she is going through in the hands of those savages. I am always mesmerized by Sanaathana culture and its willingness to accommodate even those who mock, insult and try to destroy it. In a way, sanaathana culture is similar to modern democracy that allows even those who try to destroy democracy under ‘freedom of speech’. At the same time, I wonder how long tolerant Hindu will put up with arrogance and hatred that is coming from minority. For example, here is a report on Udupi swamiji acknowledging and respecting Muslim faith and its followers in a hindu-majority society. Still, one AS Mathew from minority community can’t bring himself to appreciate this act. Instead, he shows his real color and starts spewing venom and hatred on Hindu community. He personifies everything wrong with an ideology that has done so much damage all over the world.

President of India invited all the Cabinet Ministers for the Iftar feast, none of the BJP Ministers showed up in New Delhi. Do you check with them, why they didn’t go? The Chief Ministers of Goa-Bihar-Tamil Nadu also Lalu Presad went to attend. drona, you might have given the Cabinet Ministers the advice, not to attend. Did a great job. Why PM Modi is repeatedly visiting the Christian countries, the U.S. the 6th time. Is he going to donate something to the U.S.? Now the news are coming from all across India that the Christian attacks are increasing in India, then why is going to the Christian countries buttering them to invest in India for job creation. What jobs you are suggesting? Cow matha hospitals-ambulance service etc which can create millions of jobs. What about starting cow urine bottling companies which is now found as a cure for all diseases in Gujarat. Don’t worry drona, you need to drink some cow urine for your health, drink as much you can free of cost.

  • From A. S. Mathew on Setting Example of Harmony, Pejawar Swamiji Holds Iftar for Muslims

Jewish people began to land in India during the time of Solomon and ever since at the coastal areas of Arabian sea. St. Thomas came to India to spread Christianity 2000 years back. The Muslims came to India 1400 years back. The Parse religion came India mainly starting 1400 years back. Likewise, the newest international religion, the Bahai Faith which is combination of Christianity and Islam religion also came to India. The largest population of Bahai and Parse faith can be located in India, then in the U.S. The original inhabitants of India are the Dravidians, and Aryans, the self-declaring super class of India now ruling India came from the middle eastern countries with their worships of thousand of deities, invented the class and caste system to exploit the weaker sections of the society. The current RSS/BJP rule now wanted to get rid of the minorities and Dalits in India, thus already divided the nation based on religion-color and caste. If fellowships of the different religious followers are not conducted as Swamiji is doing, India will be heading towards very serious problems; surprisingly, the rest of the world is watching this new drama of India. As JESUS said, a house divided against itself will not stand, a nation divided against itself will not stand. PM Modi and his deity worshipers don’t like the minority; especially the Muslims and Christians, but he is repeatedly traveling to the Christian and Muslim nations to solicit investment in India, that is the tallest paradox of the 21st century.

  • From Nelson Lewis on 'Ignite Passion-Inspire Change! Student Council of St Aloysius PUC Inaugurated

As Ivan D’Souza, the MLC and Chief whip said, “Look at me, even when there were senior Congress leaders in our party, but CM having trust on me gave me this prestigious post as Chief Whip. The CM knew that I could deliver and work hard. Similarly, you should show your leadership qualities here, and slowly come up later. You need be very active now during this age, and not sit lazy on the last bench. Be alert, active, committed and dedicated to your activities-the you will surely be great leaders of this country and also great human beings. All success in your leadership qualities and activities.” Well, Ivan D’Souza, you are lucky and it is not easy for an honest, but intelligent man to get into Indian politics, unless one is a crook, has muscle power, is corrupt and willing to compromise himself. Politics is considered to be the most worst profession, at least in India, as there is nothing black and white in politics, but many shady and gray areas and everyone joins and is in politics to amass wealth by hook-or-by-crook. For your kind information, under the current Chief Minister, Karnataka has the dubious distinction of being the third most corrupt State. Though, I have not met this man, Siddharamaiah, nor am I interested in meeting him, he looks arrogant, filled with sleaze and superstitious. I remember, how he ordered his staff to change his car, just because a crow sat on the roof and shat. Would he have indulged in this tamasha, if it was his own car. He is not able to do anything about the polluted lakes, roads that have potholes, etc. So, you need not sing praises of your Chief Minister, as well-informed Indians will not take your bullshit. Among all parties in India, the Indian National Congress is the most corrupt, leaderless and shameless party. Some of Its top leaders are traitors, if characters like Mani Shankar Aiyar and the ilk are any indicators. The entire party is filled by corrupt individuals from the top to bottom. The party is a family-run concern or dynastic with the mother and son feeling that it is their God-given right to head the party. Rahul Gandhi is the best child artist in the land and when he speaks in the Parliament there are ripples of laughter and snigger. He suddenly appears at spots where there were troubles, takes selfies, creates confusion, scores brownie points and then disappears to Bangkok, Italy, etc. Nobody goes to Bangkok for pilgrimage, but something else. He is totally irresponsible and this mother-son combine will destroy the party. Both do not want to relinquish power to function as mere parliamentarians when they have no capabilities and hand over the reins to capable people. So, in short, there are many good-for-nothing fellows in the party who pay their respects to mother and son, sing their praises (and say that the family has done a lot of sacrifices) and make hay while the sun shines. One of the parliamentarians in the party, who is a shameless Mangalorean, who has enriched himself, considering the fact that he is stupid, dim-witted and has shallow intellect. I would not be surprised that he must be corrupt and rotten to the core, because when it comes to minting money, netas do not need any training, especially Congressmen. India had the most incompetent Prime Minister in Dr. Manmohan Singh, who lacked the assertive, dynamic and adventure qualities of the Sikh race, so much so Sikhs would disown him and say that he does not have any community characteristics that provides the major percentage of soldiers in the Army. He blinks like an owl, chirps like a sparrow and people used to think he is clean until his name was also mentioned in the Italian Court Judgement (sentencing bribe givers) as one of the recipients of kickbacks in the Augusta-Westland helicopter deal. If you were to go on Youtube and type, “the most corrupt Indians,” you should not be surprised that the majority of the names that pop-up are of Congressmen. Ivan D’Souza do not give any hollow lectures.
