  • From Richard Thomas on Karnataka bandh tomorrow, state likely to be hit

What would anyone benefit, but suffer for a whole day with inconvenience and business losses, by staging and supporting a total closure of Karnataka State by BJP, with the excuse of waiver of loans of all farmers, allegedly made by the new CM. All these Politicians make a lot of promises to win votes from the majority that are the farming community in Karnataka, Little do they understand by the term Farmers’ Loan – each bank that has given such a loan, must first submit to the new CM for what purpose the loan was sanctioned and granted and whether there was any collateral involved. Managerial staff of Indian banks are very much involved big time in loan approvals for something in return. If a Loan Waiver has to be sanctioned, the question remains who will compensate the banks’ money that was loaned. Moreover, all farmers have various reasons and projects other than farming for which they take loans. The PM & FM should also be in support and be signatories to such a large waiver of Farmer’s loans. This requires a lot of statistics and numbers to be worked upon in real time.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Working with relatives can be dangerous, difficult: Tanaaz Irani

Working with relatives or family members is not dangerous but often sensitive because each of us want to preserve our family ties at all timeand under all circumstances. Business comes and business goes with all objectives being carefully watched and adhered. At the end of the day, whatever happens to the business is equally important, but more important is the family link where members of the family need one another and preserve all the family ties. The community always looks upon the family unity to survive and prosper. A family that prays together stays together, and the family that stays together need one another in good times and tough times. A family unity is good for the community so that a family can be a role model to all others that watch their unity and diversity with pride. When a family smiles at each other the world joins together and create an atmosphere of joy. The family togetherness is good for everyone.

Mr Alfie,Thanks to you for exposing the fake authorities of Mangalore. Mayor Moilly was corporator of Kulshekar area for few years. The spilled concrete was there for past 2 years or more near His house. I called Mayor 3 weeks back regarding this problem and He answered that He will contact PWD regarding this. But He did not tell me when or which month He will contact PWD. Same problem was happened on other side of road. I and owner of Bar near Cambridge school stopped the mixer trucks and made those drivers to clean the road by removing the spilled concrete and wash the road. I also requested Police Inspector Muddy and Inspector Suresh Kumar to punish the drivers with heavy fine. That stopped future spillage.

  • From Richard Thomas on Attn: Mayor! Have You Noticed that the Road Leading to your House is FILTHY?

Alfie, you being a US returnee must be obviously aware, how in the US the law maintains NO DUMPING law, and how Contractors, have to lease out a large disposal container to carry their demolished material, and how residents have to pay US$35 per month and have their garbage and process waste picked up one day a week by the Waste Management company. This law must be applied in India too to see a clean country. In India, the general public and as well as the authority, be it the Police or the Municipality, seems to ignore their responsibility to check this nuisance from the people who live in such neighborhood. It is the prime responsibility of the Municipality to come out with a workable plan to charge and provide large garbage bins on these road sides where you have observed and photographed, and the Police must book these Contractors who dump demolished building materials. This is the only way, and simply writing articles after articles in your media is not going to change anything as the Police and Municipality do not read and do not see what you and the responsible citizens see.

Generally, it is not all safe to travel in these private Udupi-Mangalore Express buses, as the drivers are careless and irresponsible and illiterate with a bad attitude and short commute time to compete with other private buses on this route. Durgama buses have the most accidents statistic will tell. Speeding is one of the first causes of these express buses besides racing each other for time. The traffic Dept. should levy hefty fines and Travelling public using these buses must sue them for large compensation so that they will learn how to respect. Parking on NH66 or any main road must never be allowed as it occupies the shoulder which is required in emergencies. But the Traffic Dept. does not carry out any safety studies, and therefore, bad accidents and collisions occur,

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Eighth Graduation Day Celebrated in Sahyadri Campus

Graduation ceremony is a colorful occasion for any student who receives his or her credentials in the discipline they are qualified in. Graduation is a happy occasion for each student because that is the day when a graduating student goes home with a pride that all his or her efforts of study have come into reality, and that the graduating student can now prepare a suitable Resume for the career opportunities ahead. Career opportunities in a country such as India where there are more than two million students receiving their Degrees or Diplomas is not an easy task. A graduating student has to search for a suitable career opportunity wherever possible in order to get involved with any kind of job opportunity possible. It is a tough situation to be in and hope for the best in securing a suitable job. The Universities as well as the public has a conscientious duty to help any or all graduating students to secure any job possible so that a graduating student gets engaged with any job opportunity available anywhere within India or outside India. In the past, the Gulf region was a prospective area to secure a job, but now such opportunities are not so easy available because of the economic situations prevailing everywhere. It is therefore our prayer and also our desire that all Graduating students get a suitable job opportunity anywhere, and that a student gets involved with a promising job opportunity as soon as possible. The sooner a graduating student gets a job is always a pride to the University he or she comes from. This is the beginning of a long awaited journey for any student to reap the harvest of all his or her efforts in achieving the Graduating result after a continuous struggle of so many years of hard work. May God bless all the Graduating students in securing a quick job and a suitable job for all the specialty of educational credentials they earn with so much of efforts and concerns.

Hebbara says the audio clip is fake. Ugrappa says he can bet his political career to stand by his claim. As much as BJP is to be blamed here, the MLAs being poached also have criminally implicated themselves. If the MLAs from the JDS-Congress who were the target of BJP horse trading, own up to those phone calls, then it will affect the coalition more than the BJP. Appa-maga won’t let that happen. • From Jay on He Did Great Developmental Work for the City, But Sadly J R Lobo Got BETRAYED by.....?

JR Lobo betrayed his very own people both Hindus and Christians who voted for him by joining in the celebration of “TIPU JAYANTHI“. This man and many other Congress leaders whose ancestors were raped and murdered by this demon king, but they celebrated the mass murderers birthday and that too using tax payers money. If they so badly wanted to celebrate then they should have used their own money and declaring the day a public holiday is a travesty of justice. Lobo also made a speech celebrating the occasion which was nothing short of slap in face, linking a bible story to the celebration of this butchers birthday to Mary Magdelene and Jesus. Thus he and the rest of the congress gang proved themselves untrustworthy, and when they came this time begging for votes, the people replied justly and made the right choice by getting rid of these opportunist In sincerely hope that going forward there will be no more celebrations on the birthday of man who in many peoples eyes has gone down into the dustbin of Indian history.

  • From M D'Souza on He Did Great Developmental Work for the City, But Sadly J R Lobo Got BETRAYED by.....?

Different people give different reasons for the loss or Victory. It is not easy to understand Voter’s mind and what he/she decides. Every candidate has to aim for the every vote, then he will win. I spoke to few people and every one gave different reasons. 1. Mr Lobo participating in Tippu Jayanti Celebrations did not go well with many Catholics. Even though Tippu’s atrocities like torture/captivity/forceful conversion happened more than 200 years ago, the harm/damage/violence was much more than the right wing sponsored Chritian Worship Place attacks 10 years ago. 2. I don’t know how much canvassing was done with Catholic community by the Congress party?. Educated people do not vote/support a candidate just because they speak your language or follows your religion. Did Congress party think that ” we will get all catholic Votes, no matter what” ? Did Mr Lobo put any efforts to reach out to them? Many Catholics did not wanted to vote RSS supported candidate and abstained from voting. 3. Significant number of Jeppu Catholics did not vote Mr Lobo. He did attend a meeting with them and showed inclination to solve the issues and had promised to bring both parties to the table and negotiate a settlement. 4. Congress government/ Home Minister Dr Param could have done more in Mr Baliga’s murder investigation . Many people thought there is no difference between both parties in providing Justice. 5. There were few photos were circulating in Media. Mr Lobo, Mr Rai, Mr Fernandes chatting/laughing together with Mr Kateel. There is nothing wrong in elected representatives meeting/laughing/travelling together. The caption on one of the photo was” nama poora onje, janakulu manganakulu”(We all politicians are one, people are fools). 6. Some people accuse that Mr Lobo took credit for the work he did not do. 7. It was alleged that Mr Lobo had close proximity to a catholic lawyer who is not popular with many Catholics. Overall Mr Lobo is a gentleman, experienced, knowledgeable, hard working and non corrupt. Politics is not every ones cup of tea. He put his heart and soul for the development of the City. He is 65 years old. May be he can use his time with his family/travel. He has worked very hard as a government official and as a MLA. He needs rest and relaxation. I wish him good health, peace and happiness.

If he had dropped the pretence and kept the same no-nonsense and serious personality which he had 5 years ago, probably the outcome would have been different today. This mollycoddling to ‘special interest’ groups only backfired. And there was no stopping when Modi got inside the ring 2 weeks prior to the polling day. Even though congress is partly in power today, there is absolutely nothing to be proud of their achievements in the recent elections. They will be only looked down upon by the appa-maga party in every aspect though mandate is double the size of JDS. The power lies with the king and Kumaranna is on the throne. Everyone else is just a subordinate. Look at the humiliation. How long can it go on? My bet is, we will enter into another assembly election soon, probably during the same time as parliamentary elections. This coalition simply won’t work. BJP will only emerge stronger.

  • From Siva on He Did Great Developmental Work for the City, But Sadly J R Lobo Got BETRAYED by.....?

I am surprised that such an erudite writer like Alfie has left out a major point. There are many other points too but I will stick to only two or three points: Tippu Jayanthi, making fun of cow-protection and Superstition (Prohibition of) Act. Congress celebrated ‘Jayanthi’ of Tippu. First of all, there is no concept of Jayanthi in Islam. Don’t know who had started this but Congress acted as if their life depended on it. Siddaramaiah dd this only to teach Hindus. Now he will merrily continue with the help of JDS. That is another matter. But why did this affect Lobo? This should never be a question but point of introspection. Christians were one of the worst affected by Tippu. Yet Lobo said nothing about it and supported the Jayanthi of the perpetrator who tortured his own ancestors. Many might not have voted him for this reason. The question is who really is Judas here. Second: Cow-protection. No matter what the arguments are for or aginst ban of cow-slaughter, the cow is definitely dear to Hindus. Again a lot of people may question this notion itself. Let them. but Hindus have answered them by votes. All that was required was to show the willingness to stop the illegal slaughter. Too little was done – that too by Honest police officers. MLA showed absolutely no interest about this point. A lot of Hindus who had voted him last time would have silently turned away. Third: Anti-superstition act. Most people have their own beliefs. As long as one person’s belief does not hurt others, there should not be any restrictions. I too don’t find Made Snana, ede Snana etc as rational. But a lot of people believe in it. When they are doing it on their own will with no-pressure from others, restricting it by enacting a law is enacting a law acting against their beliefs. Instead of such laws, encouragement should have been given about the ills of such practices. Instead of health-issues and irrationality of such issues, it was painted as if it was a caste issue. While erudite scholars may have strong arguments, for a simple mind and heart seeing is believing. They would have seen that even the upper caste people roll over the leaves. So it would make no sense to call it a caste-issue. The best course of action in such cases is to educate and not legislate. I know there will be hundreds of arguments and counter-arguments (One reason I stopped commenting on Mangalorean is these endless arguments which led no-where). But people have spoken and it is up to the leaders of the party to take it and act. Rather than going to temples as a soft-Hindutva, if Congress had even shown even slightest of regards to the feelings of a large section of their followers, they would not have lost the votes. Now that they have the ‘Surrender-power’, they can still do the right things and get the real power.

The late T A Pai was defeated by an unknown rickshaw driver union president who went on to become one of the Cong I stalwarts. Yes we are talking about Oscaranna. Did Pai deserve to lose his deposit against Fernandes? His own bank staff, KMC staff voted for Oscar. They were actually voting for Indiramma. Yeddy was unfortunate to miss the majority mark. BJP lost at least 20 seats for small margins. Even if they had won 10 of them, Yeddy would have continued. Now he should focus on preparing for Lok Sabha elections due next year. He would do well to project a reliable youner person as the next leader. I feel sorry for Mr Lobo who would have become a minister if he had won.

This is very good for BJP. The loser Congress has to surrender to third-place winner Kummy and yield to his demands. During 2019 elections,JDS will demand majority of Old Mysore seats and there is a good chance that the coalition will not last for more than a year. Plus, ‘appa-maga’ team has repeatedly shown how deceptive they are. Congress is not a majority in any of the major states. Sad day for a party known for minority ‘vote bank’ politics.

  • From Henry James on District Congress holds Vijayotsava at Mallikatta

What exactly is this victory celebration from Congress today in aid of? Morally speaking, absolutely nobody was a winner in this election, not the least of which is the Karnataka electorate. The possibility of congress forming alliance government with JDS is only a saving grace for the taxpayer from spending another Rs. 11000 crore on yet another election. Speaking of the moral aspect to this drama, Congress was the first who was sold out like a harlot and surrendered to JDS unconditionally. Just with the intention of keeping the largest party out of power, in a move which looks like is a blatant act of survival, congress with its 78 seats (35% mandate) joined hands with an opportunistic regional party with only 38 seats (17% mandate). Now you see how the appa maga party will make a living hell for Congress. So Lobo has no moral right to celebrate here. JDS has never had a history worthy of mentioning where they have adhered to the coalition agreement. They play spoilsport at every opportunity. Just 10 days ago appa had made it clear that if maga ever made any pact with Congress he would disown him as his son. But look at them today. It’s a different matter to surmise that BJP was too arrogant ever since the initial lead on the counting day, and made one blunder after another to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. May be Shah left the state too early. If he had stayed on for another week possibly the outcome would have been different. When Congress-JDS made the first move, BJP should have stayed back because that alliance would not have lasted for long. Within months BJP would have come to power. But they used their influence to coerce the governor to allow Yeddy to form the government and generously got 2 weeks to prove majority on the floor. This was another blunder. If it was only 1 week, the outcome today would be different. With 2 weeks, the opposite party had the option of moving the Supreme Court and we know what happened since. Now , since BJP anyways went ahead, Yeddy should never have resigned, instead should have fought till the end (even if it amounted to loss on the floor) but he gave up and admitted defeat. That showed he is a weak politician. The state BJP lacks discipline and is in desperate need of strong leadership. The central BJP leadership can only do so much. Up until late last year Yeddy and Eeshawappa were at each others’ throats and it was a miracle that they crossed 100 in this election – all credit to Modi and Shah. Now, the central BJP has a challenge whether to let the incompetent Yeddy continue as the leader. Rayanna brigade may rear its head again soon. If Yeddy is changed, state BJP will split once again. May be the central leadership has to come up with a strategy(or blackmailing tactic) to make both Yeddy and Eeshwarappa to take permanent political sanyas and choose another able, young and bold leader. But the chances of that happening are slim. Another really shameful development in the last 3 days was the depth to which our politicians sank in order to poach MLAs. It’s not that only BJP were to blame here – even the congress MLAs were so bent that they were willing to negotiate for the right amount, totally disregarding the people and their interests that put them there in the first place. May be this was happening all along and only now we are getting to know this due to sting operations and social media but it’s disgraceful. The Reddy/Sriramulu mafia promising 125 crores, 100-times increase in wealth, Yeddy and his sons promising to close criminal cases in favour of horse trade etc. is simply disgusting. This definitely goes against what Modi was proclaiming about his mission against corruption. Now he needs to step up and do the cleansing exercise else he will suffer in the next years’ elections. Nobody can deny these things did not take place – they are on YouTube for everyone to see. For now, learn to live with the chaos and the anarchy that will ensue as a result of this week’s developments. Who knows, we may see yet another election by the end of this year. The Indian taxpayer has unlimited supply of moola.

Timely gesture and a noble cause. Helping the country-men to facilitate a new mosque in the close vicinity and save their time and money in travelling elsewhere for prayers is a nice and thoughtful deed that will go a long way in the Arab World. The prayers that are recited in the new mosque will go a long way in helping the Christian businessman from Kerala in all his personal and family needs.

  • From Original R.Pai on Congress Candidates Shocked over Assembly Election Results in DK

“I have more than one lakh Christian and Muslim voters…” Report quoting an unhappy congress candidate. This comment shows the mindset and reason why Congress lost so badly. Congress has turned into a minority-worshiping political party and normal voters decided to teach it a good lesson. The minorities have practiced heavy communal politics using Congress and people got tired of it. For years, I have been pointing out on this forum on how minorities and congress leaders couldn’t grow beyond petty communal mindset. Lobo started his political journey as honest man. However, it was very disappointing to see him absent in any good social events like cleanliness campaign. He associated himself only with minorities, especially with Catholics and paid a heavy price.

  • From Richard Thomas on Rider killed in bus-bike Collision at Yerlapadi

All those roads in the suburbs of Udupi District have seen many a life lost, all due to the negligence of the Authority of Roads and Highways of Karnataka. A yellow unbroken line should be drawn on such roads of suburbs that has traffic flowing up and down so that those buses and trucks that drive bang in the middle of the road, can be made to adhere to one side of the road only and avoid knocking people off bikes head-on. Moreover, these roads should be broadened to accommodate the size of two buses with sufficient free space, and whilst construction, pavements or footpaths space must be taken into consideration at least on one side of these roads, for pedestrians to walk. The Department of Transport or the Police is certainly to be blamed for not ensuring that these basic necessities are met with, simply registering a case is the most stupid thing the law does.

  • From Richard Thomas on Congress committed to serving Karnataka's poor, says Rahul

Mr. Rahul Gandhi and the Congress Party is now talking about serving the poor – what exactly has he or his party served the poor and the needy with in Karnataka, All those Bhagya schemes of the CM are good but not truly beneficial in the long run. Political parties are fighting over Karnataka State for their own reason and benefit – people of Karnataka must understand their strategy by wisdom. Karnataka lacks basic infrastructure and others such as housing, water, electricity, fuel/gas for cooking, education, lack of industries, jobs, good roads, transportation and price control of food and commodities. There are always water shortages April to June, Power outages daily and throughout the year, no price control on basic foodstuff and taxes are higher than New Delhi. That will be the day when all of Karnataka will be self sufficient and will have no water or power shortages and no want of jobs or income. If Rahul Gandhi or PM Modi visits the Udupi City Bus Stand area on any given day and witness those poor people, men, women, and children, who gather every morning in their hundreds, from all over Karnataka hunger for a days’ job and income, only then they will learn what it is to serve the poor!

Safety is the KEY for each and every growing city in any part of the world, specially India where each of our city are flooded with more and more people, and each one needs safety and security for their daily survival. We have to create more tax payers in our city so that we have more safety and surveillance for each one’s safety. We need more policemen on the street to control our traffic, we need more lighting to beautify our cities and make sure that all our movements are being watched from any public danger. We need broader streets, cleaner streets and more beautification all over the cities so that more and more visitors come to our city and enjoy the beauty of our landscape, our parks and recreation areas. We need more cleanliness all over the place with more gardens, more parks and more attractive sites including good sculptures so that the city becomes more attractive. Nice water fountains, nice maintenance schemes and regular upgradation requires constant supervision. All of the above need good people, trained people and dedicated people so that our city remains safe and sound, clean and beautiful at all times.

If we start counting ‘TEN BEST GIFTS” that were bestowed upon Mangalore, the destiny of Nuns and Priests coming to Mangalore as Missionaries are on the top of the list. Our grateful thanks we owe to the AC Nuns in particular for their love and dedication towards Mangalore where they made their beloved home 150 years ago. The Education and the discipline of faith that the AC Nuns brought with them to Mangalore needed lots of sacrifices and dedication. They came to India with a love of God and also the love of people. They established schools and charirtable Institutions. They reached out tens of thousands of people regardless of faith and they proved their abilities in the life of intellectualism added with determination and love for people. God has been extremely kind to Mangalore in so many ways, and the kindness in providing abundance of Nuns and Priests with a willingness to serve is something that we can write in volumes, and praise God for being so kind and merciful towards Mangalore. St. Agnes College of Mangalore is a “Signature Project” of the AC Nuns in Mangalore that became the foundation of all the nuns planned and strengthened. The brought the best of teachers whose quality of Education spread all over Mangalore where tens of thousands of students flourished with Education and dedication for others. Thank you, AC Nuns, for all your blessings and magnanimous work for the people. May you remain successful always in your good work that spreads all across the region and brings awareness to people what is the strength of Christianity is all about.

Even when people blame it for the corruption, bank frauds, and all the different blunders what does our man Mr. Modi do…He places the blame on the congress. Says, Congress left me such a crappy country that I can’t do anything good with it. I mean, so many gujju’s fled to western countries seeking assylum disowning their own country. No clue why Modi stayed back. But the point is, does Mr. Modi and BJP take any responsibility for anything? It would be better to have a hung parliament or Congress in full majority at least Congress doesn’t shrug off responsibility and in a hung parliament someone would take responsibility and we can definitely hold the government responsible only in this scenario. With BJP we are putting our country 50 years behind.

In spite of all our weaknesses in many sectors of our daily progress in life, we have a tremendous pride to boast and also a privilege to prove to the rest of the world the amount of success we have gained thru advancement of our Education. The only area that we cannot face the world of anxiety is the fact that in spite of all the rest of the progress, how come we have no eradicated our extreme poverty for the past 70 years of our Independence. This is one single area that we all need to share the guilt and should try and discover where lies the priority to wake up and make things possible. When, where and how this situation of poverty in India that we all can work together and correct our future is something we all have to come forward and mark the date on our calendar and see when can we achieve the desired necessity of our life in India.

Visiting Churches, Temples and Mosques, and joining the flock of different faiths is truly a good symbol of Evangelism for the election candidates to display their faith in God, and also enable them to join various other faiths and place their positive hope in God. In a country such as India, God is our help and support; God is our strength and confidence. The Leadership in secular India where merciful God has to protect the electoral candidates and bless them so that their leadership skills are blessed abundantly and that all that the election candidates aspire in public life is spelled out well to the public, and all their promises and assurances to the people are well honored with the crowning success in the election. Thank you, Mr. J. R. Lobo for your continued determination to serve the people and serve the Nation. May all your hopes and desires be crowned with rising success – more than what you have already displayed during your current.

Did Swami ji say ‘ Vijayee bhava?’ Duryodhana and Yudhishtira go to Lord Krishna seeking support. Duryodhana sits at head end and Yudhishtira at the feet. Lord opens his eyes and sees Yudhishtita first and asks him what he can do for him. Duryodhana gets upset and informs that he came first and should be heard first. Yudhishtira allows that. It is another matter that Duryodhana chose the army over Krishna. Sorake ko kya milnewaala hai?

Good work by the Income Tax Dept., however either this media or the authority in the Raid, does not want to make public the names and photos of these evil Indians and shame them, Neither is there any law involved in convicting them and sending them to jail on black money. Hope all this money and gold confiscated can be utilised for the upliftment of the poor and needy in Karnataka by building homes, elementary schools, and distributing clothing and food and medicine. Otherwise all this ill gotten wealth will never be accounted and as nothing is ever shown in Government accounts where all the year-long cash, gold, and drugs and foreign liquor caught is utilised.

What is Modi effect? By denying its presence, Cong I is actually acknowledging it. Modi will visit Bangalore with 34 seats. Even if he shows his presence in half of them, BJP will win more than 22. BJP will find it tough in Mandya Mysire Hassan Kanakapura Ram Nagar. They should have little problem un Belgaum and surrounding districts. They will manage to win many seats in DK and Udipi except for Udipi proper. Bellary Chitradurga likely to swing BJP way. Shimoga and Chikka Mangalore will favor BJP. I predict 118 seats for BJP. IN 2008 I had predicted 110. They got just that. I predict 25 seats for JDS Cong I will still get 91 as predicted by Times. It is a pity that Yeddy will become CM again. If I had my way he will not be the CM. So who should be the CM? Make one of the winning MLA from Bangalore city the next CM. Yes. That will be Suresh Kumar from Rajaji Nagar. Good luck BJP. Sorry Cong I folks. You guys will lose power. Sorry HDK. You will not be the king maker. No hung assembley but clear verdict will emerge. PS:Siddu will lose bith Chamundeshwari and Badami. Pamma will win Udipi. Vedavyas Kamath will win Mangalore city eventhough Lobo may scrape close. Eeshwarappa will lose from Shimoga. SriRamulu will lose Molakalmur but will wun Badami. Ashok Kheni will lose from Bidar. I am waiting on announcement from Nayak maam who is allergic to forecasts.

It appears that on the pressure from the IMF Chief, the Center in India is considering the death penalty for raping children. Due to the number of rapes and murders, especially in the UP, Bihar, and the North areas, the POSCO Act was introduced, but it appears that truly did not deter criminals from committing such henious acts against children and women in India. Litigation and Judicial laws must change to see any change in India in this respect, and as well in the areas of corruption and cheating.

Dear Alfie, thank you so much for this really timely and requisite article. It is getting more and more impossible to drive in Mangalore owing to the lack of knowledge, adherence, disobedience about road rules, and then the absence of punishment for rule breaking as well. Would like to add two more problems – people driving the OPPOSITE way on one-way streets and lanes; and jaywalkers who jump in front of vehicles to cross, just showing up their palms for the (running) vehicles to stop! Two wheelers, autos and private buses – the less said about the way they “drive,” the better!

  • From Prof. George Menachery on Veteran Journalist T V R Shenoy Passes Away

It gives a heartache to read about the death of the doyen of journalists T. V. R. Shenoy. He had such a correct judgement of what is to be printed and what is not to be printed. When I was sending reports for Manorama from Rome during the election of Saint John Paul papal election in 1978 he used to send the relevant portions to all the editions of Manorama to be translated and published just a few hours after their despatch from Rome by teleprinter. But when I sent the report of the actual election itself the teleprinter reports were rejected by him time and again ( thus saving me a lot of hard cash difficult for an Indian journalist to come by) because the election news itself was available ( unlike the materias, of my previous reports) on all agencies like Reueters, PTI, AFP etc. and also on every international channel. When the teleprinter machine rejected my reports a number of times on that night in October 1978 I felt a little offended until things were clarified to me by Shenoy after my return to India. His acumen and finesse has rarely been equalled by other journalists of the country. I ALSO REMEMBER HOW HE PUBLISHED A LONG ARTICLE IN THE WEEK ABOUT THE ART AND ARCHITECTURE OF kERALA TEMPLES AND CHURCHES AT A TIME WHEN NOT MANY WERE TAKING INTEREST IN SUCH THINGS. May his brave soul RIP. -Prof. George Menachery

  • From Richard Thomas on Beware! Incredible Shrinking Circles near Nanthoor and KPT Junctions?

Roundabouts, as they are correctly referred to in English, are a British invention, when motor cars were new and few during the Royal times. Prior to motor vehicles, there were only Horse Carriages and Bullock Carts and Hand Carts in India. Today, there are more buses, trucks, cars, and motorcycles that the roads can accommodate, and these Roundabouts are very hazardous where the driving mentality of Indians is very impatient and bad to the extent of drunk driving and road rage. Although the media in Mangalore and Karnataka claim Mangalore being a SMART CITY and Education Hub, etc., it is not true in the case of installation and proper functioning of Traffic Lights. The people who pay so much taxes in Driver’s Licence, Purchase of new vehicles and Transfer of Pre-used vehicles, Registration, etc. must wake up and demand from the Regional Karnataka Transport Dept., why they are so lethargic and irresponsible in ensuring that Traffic Lights work all the time. When there are power cuts, that unfortunately and strangely applies to Streetlights and Traffic Lights, there should be Battery Back-up, so that they are operational at all times. No use of constantly only complaining and writing big long articles. If there are Traffic Laws, there should also be laws for those in the Transport Dept. to comply with or face federal consequences.

The Prime Minister is not responsible for crimes committed by Hindus and that too in a temple! Nor is BJP party responsible. The Law will find the culprits, and pray they be hanged in public so that other criminals may learn of consequences. Bihar Model? Is that a joke? Karnataka is way ahead of Bihar in most respects. Bihar could follow the lead of Karnataka. “India’s ‘abducted grooms’, forced to marry in Bihar state” (http://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-asia-india-43709817/india-s-abducted-grooms-forced-to-marry-in-bihar-state) — is this what Nitish wants to propagate? This subject is being highlighted in this media time and again. It is obvious that these Kannadigas instead of living everyday that God blesses them with in love, peace, and harmony, have nothing better to battle about than on whose name a road of no real significance should be named after. It would have served better if they would devote their time, money, and energy in adapting this road and to maintain it’s upkeep, that is so needed in Mangalore, and leave the naming or numbering of a certain length of public road to the Municipality of Mangalore. My bet is if one stops a 100 motorists and inquire the name of this road, most would not know it – as in Mangalore and Udupi there are no road names or road signs, and if any, they are not visibly displayed.

Congratulations! Great detection and policing work by the team of DCIB. Anti-social criminals from UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Nepal, Bangladesh both male and female are coming to Karnataka State to cheat, steal, and kill under the guise of labourers or skilled building workers. They must be kept in check, contained, and stopped, India should come up with one unforgeable National Identity card for all it’s identified citizens that must be carried by all Indians at all times, especially whilst travelling from State to State and to be produced at banks, post offices, and other federal offices. All other meaningless cards such as Aadhar Card, Ration Card, PAN Card, and Drivers’ Licence, are all easily forged and even Bangladeshis and Pakistanis have obtained them unscrupulously in convinace with those in authority. All anti-social elements whether political or criminal must be kept in check by keeping a good tag on them when they enter Karnataka State by flight, train, bus, car, or motorbike – something like Immigration Control but on a local level – in this manner it will be easy to do a background check on them to find out if they are criminals or not. So that they can be deported to their own States or Countries to serve their prison term as free boarding and lodging on State’s cost cannot contain and eliminate crime and criminals. All Indian States must follow this system to ensure less crime and criminals.

Does it really mean anything when those who were in authority and those who are in authority hate each other and their parties, and are demoralizing and demeaning each other on a daily basis that one can read in this media Mangalore.com and Deccan Herald. These students should first read all what is taking place now that the elections are on and come to their own beliefs and conclusions. For example in Mangalore, Ramakrishna Mission volunteers dedicate their time and energy to keep the city clean – who does this in Udupi? In Udupi, the students should only look for a BETTER UDUPI so that there will be cleaner surroundings, water, electricity, proper pavements, and better roads and security and police presence at all times, and ensure those in authority will work for the betterment of the town.

You think the MCC officials can operate independently without political pressure and influence from ruling party? How many cleanliness drives have been organized by local MLAs? Unless the mentality of Indians change, dirt, litter, and dumping will not end. In this instance, the Mangalore Municipality must arrange to place large garbage bins or the Contractor Anthony Waste Management to enable those dumping to dump in the garbage bins. In the meantime, the Rama Krishna mission should rope up some volunteers of the Airport Area Bajpe, and conduct a cleanliness drive. And the PM should compensate all the volunteers in cash or kind for their time and labour from the large loan he has taken from the World Bank for this purpose. • From Michele Westfall on Mangaluru: Karnataka to be Deaf Free State - Minister U T Khader

Three thoughts in relation to this article and their plan: 1) While it’s important to identify Deaf children as early as possible, simply identifying them will not cause the area to become a “Deaf-free state.” 2) Cochlear implants are not a cure. Additionally, they do not instantly turn the Deaf child into a hearing person…in other words, what the Deaf person gets through cochlear implants will not be equal to what hearing people hear. It’s not even close. 3) Most importantly, using terms “deaf mute” and “deaf and dumb” are both offensive to Deaf people, and people in India need to stop using these terms, as both are outdated and offensive. Additionally, aiming for a “Deaf-free state” is also very offensive and is akin to genocide. Being Deaf is not the same as being ill–it’s not a health condition. The best way to raise and educate Deaf children is to provide them with early access to Indian Sign Language (ISL) and make sure they become fluent in ISL. Fluency in ISL will ensure that they will transfer their linguistic knowledge to learning to read and write other languages. By the way, I’m Deaf and I don’t wear cochlear implant. I speak American Sign Language fluently and write English fluently.

It is truly hard to define the authority and duty of a Police personnel in India. Mostly, the Police personnel are used by political parties or protesting parties – where their presence is seen and felt. On any given day in the town of Mangalore or Udupi, one would rarely see a police man or a police woman otherwise. Traffic Police are the police seen at junctions and at some intersections. But should one point out to the Police man or the Traffic Police man on the bad state of roads or pot holes or lack of traffic lights on inter- sections or on junctions – the police do not take any action. So what is the authority and duty of a police man or a Traffic police man or woman.

God bless all those volunteers who are motivated to spend their time and energy in helping clean their hometowns and surroundings, under the leadership of the Ramakrishna Mission. Serving God and serving the Community is Love, and with love comes harmony, peace, and well being. Similarly, Specialist Doctors of various disciplines of medicine should also give back and reach out on a weekly basis to the poor and needy of their town and neighbourhood. A medicine and general nutrition drive also would help – so that people can donate general medicine such as toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash. bath soap, sanitary pads, pampers for babies, cold and cough syrups, health tablets and tonics, etc, People also should conduct food and clothes drives in Churches, Temples, and Mosques, where people can donate lentils, rice, sugar, wheat flour, rice flour, canned soups, mixed vegetables, fruits, etc, Used and good items of clothing for babies, girls and boys and shoes. books and toys for the poor and needy children and women, that can be distributed on a weekly basis in a Church hall or a Mosque Hall, to the poor and needy residents of that town or neighbourhood, on the basis of documenting the people to ensure that only genuine of the area are benefitting. People now must also take over governance of roadside vendors and create a system to alleviate their honesty in earning their daily bread, by documenting them, and allocating them areas where they can vend and also ensure hygiene and cleanliness especially if they are vending food.

  • From Richard Thomas on Hypertension and Its Effects on Your Body

Hypertension can be contained if one processes life and people and everything in-between in an acceptable and calm manner, Nobody really knows why what we call disease strikes our God made bodies. Research and Science and Doctors and Specialists are limited to their tall claims based on what they encounter and study. Same people also claim smoking causes cancer, and whereas little children too die of cancer! In my opinion, our lifestyle matters most in containing any disease, and it has nothing to do with eating healthy or poor nourishment, whether one goes to the gym or not. Hypertension is directly related to how we process our daily thoughts, needs, and challenges. If we need good education, we worry about big funds, if we have good education, we worry about a good job, if we have good jobs, we struggle with life’s challenges especially in India, with poor hygiene, poor amenities,, poor infrastructure, poor law and order, poor governance, and so on – it is these things that actually cause tension – what Researchers call Hyper Tension. If we stay calm and relaxed and accept how things generally are in India, we can process our mindset better, our body processes everything in a better manner. The older generation had less problems and stress and better health and less disease because they lived simple and enjoyed nature. Today no one has time for nature – it’s all about work, business, or money! Today, men go bald at age 25 and die at age 45

  • From drona on Karnataka elections 2018: EC says polls to be held on May 12, counting on May 15

Official announcement of the silly season. The weather will be so hot in May. I wonder if any constituency will see 65% voting. Please vote for good candidates and not by party affiliation.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Once an Aloysian, Always an Aloysian! 5 Alumni Conferred 'Eminent Aloysian Alumni' Awards

It was a pride to read that five eminent Alumnis of St. Aloysius College were officially recognized in Mangalore recently in the presence of a large congregation. Occasions such as these are not only valuable for the recipients but also for the new students so that they realize that sooner or later their time will also appear before them, and they too will be recognized in one form or another. As it was rightly pointed out, once you are an Aloysian, regardless how many years endured and what all Educational disciplines that you earned, you will always be branded as an esteemed Aloysian. Each and everyone of us therefore have a legitimate responsibility to give back to our Alma Mater in whichever way possible. St. Aloysius is a reputable Institution that has earned all the reputation in and around Mangalore for nearly two centuries, and the Jesuits have established the Institution with the help of so many Missionaries as well as the students and many other Mangaloreans in order to make the Institution survive from year to year and grow from stage to stage. Thank you, St. Aloysius, for all your dedication to the past and present students of St. Aloysius. May you be blessed ten fold in all your future contributions in and around Mangalore.
