Had breakfast at the new location on Monday–much better , cozy and cleaner than the older location. This restaurant has been my favorite for the last 28 years. Best of luck to the owners, the sons of Late Raghuram Udupa, whom I knew very well.

  • From MANGO MAN on Need to Be Prepared for Future Water Crisis - Ivan

Water shortage is affecting the city dwellers very badly. There could have been a crisis last year itself since the Thumbe dam was drying up in April month . However, fortunately there were good rains in April 2015 and problem evaporated by itself. That was a clear serious warning by nature to MCC officials and MLC s like Ivan and MLA LOBO! This year Thumbe started to deplete in the month of January itself because of below normal rains . But our elected representatives were sleeping over the problem till it reached very serious proportions. Was this deliberate? Why no action was taken to use the water prudently by elected officials till the arrival monsoon ? Every one knows that there is plenty of opportunity to earn some extra money in water tanker contracts over the misery of the citizens ! Wonder why citizens are not protesting against these officials who were instrumental in creating ” man made” crisis??? Mangaloreans are pathetic in fighting for their rights!!

I have been visiting and eating at this Hotel since childhood and never the taste changed in whatever they prepared. The dedication in preparation each eatery is just outstanding. This is called “service to public”, unlike other veg hotels in the city, which has come down with their quality and service. I am yet still impressed the service level at Indra Bhavan, which is unremarkable. Though now, I have been put up abroad, but yes like Mr. Udupa said, we do pack up couple of eatery during our trip back. Long live Indra Bhavan and thank you to the Udupa family, who have thought about their customers and have put all hardships to find a place within the same locality.

More than anything else the picture of menu brought back a flood of old memories!! I am a great fan of these simple vegetarian items from dakshina kannada area. In fact I had prepared sajjige bajil over the weekend!!! LOL The only thing that surprised me was how 30 rupaaye for a masaala dosa is viewed as a reasonable price!! I was a regular customer at woodlands and I could get unlimited meal for 15 rupaaye. Oh well, this was back in mid 90s. Pretty much the same time when joker pinto ended up in Saudi !!!

Subraaya Chokkadi is a familar name to those who grew up in 80s and 90s. He was a regular contributors in pre-internet era. I’m really glad for him. Jogi is a familiar name as well. Who can forget his ‘ravi kaanaddu’ column in ‘hai bangalore’ in late 90s? Whenever I visit home in India, one of my favorite thing is to look at my large collection of sudha, taranga, tushaara, mayura, kasthuri (remember Paa. vem. aacharya??) and other publications from 80s and 90s. They have all the time in world to attend every apartment inauguration, kabbadi tournament and kori-katta!! But, they can’t find an ounce of honesty and desha prema to welcome India’s top elected leader and show some respect. This is the result of decades-long minority worshiping and sanaathana-dhwesha practiced in southa canara region!! Who needs enemies when we have these guys? Sad and embarrassing.

The Mother’s Day as we know today is a clever consumerist idea started in the West. We don’t need a special day in a calendar year to honour our mothers when we have the whole year at our disposal to return the love, kindness and gratitude to our parents. Using only one day to celebrate implies we ignore them the rest of the year.

How does one go from talking about pets to F-16 jets? – Murudeshwara RampaNNA Lol! Silly fellow must be getting whacked really bad by his overseer, Buffalo Bill(a), these days. What he fails to understand is this – Whether I write under ‘Pets’ or ‘ Phantom’, does it dilute the fact that the US is pumping in billions into a terrorist state as ‘aid’ and further selling them high-tech fighter jets? It doesn’t even strike the Joker that unlike before, one simply cannot post stuff/replies under the tab ‘EYT’. Sigh! What a simpleton! The question to be asked is – How does the Na (beef) Khaoonga, Na (beef) khilane doonga produce such dolts? Could it be the lack of Vitamin B? 😉 😉 Manu wouldn’t be too pleased, I guess. 🙂

Then, there is Baba Ramdev, a sanyasi and yogi, who is a billionaire and who is fooling people by selling his concoctions. Time will prove whether he is a Baba or something else.

  • From Horny Manatee on MLA JR Lobo Offers Prayer in Temple, Church and Mosque for Rain

If prayers can solve our problems then there is no need for any of us to get out of the bed in the morning. There is no need for hospitals, doctors as taking the terminally ill patient to the nearest temple or church or mosque should take care of that. I have seen many parents visiting churches/temples on the day of the exam results of their children to beg for better results. How exactly is that supposed to change the outcome? Praying signifies unpreparedness, laziness, complacency, arrogance and cluelessness. Challenging and confronting these religious dogmas in fact brought about the improvement in quality of life in the last 500 years but most of us, including the people’s representatives as you can see in this news article, are still relying on these age old deflecting tactics. What a sad state of affairs!!! One can be spiritual all they want but using prayers(read ‘bribes’) to get a favour from some invisible entity in the sky is heights of stupidity. Spiritualism can exist outside of religion. Religion is for mob control. It also guarantees livelihood for a few people at the top of the societal hierarchy who call themselves religious leaders.

If it wasn’t for KA-19 registration plates, these photos can pass for some remote corners of Ugaanda!! Instead of blaming construction workers, how about holding our elected leaders to slightly higher standard? How come they are not doing enough to address this? Or, Is it too inconvenient to bring up elected leader as it may damage the image of certain political party and individuals? Mangalooru folks fully deserve this as they are not willing to look at the real source of all these problems.

In fact, only a bitter experience of rejected visa can explain your desperate attempts to compare USA to KSA. As soon as we get monsoon rains, we totally forget our water problems and get back to the same old Bollywood, cricket, congress-worshiping and hindu-bashing!! We never learn lessons let alone taking any action to address the problem. Imagine this – We have elected leaders who have happily agreed to divert river nethravati instead of addressing mangaluru water crisis. This is the sad state of ‘smart city’ that has been hijacked by illiterates in ‘Beef Club’. The elected leaders don’t even show up for ‘swachcha mangaluru’ event. Heard today that Water tankers are made to draw water from the well and borewell of any household which report water in it. Water tankers are making heavy profits from the created disaster. Water is given for construction even after october which directly pressures the household needs today. Is this the time to wake up or to get braced soon after rainy season is over? Mangalur used to have excess water supply always. Why this misery now. It was thought that Mangalur will always be safe from any kind of drought( Parashurama srushti). Now whom to blame for this enormous shortage of water? It make me very sad to think that we are no where above the other parts of Karnataka where there are frequent droughts. If we retrospect about our deeds for the last 10-12 years we have the answer!! We have systematically destroyed our own Mangalur because of our greed. We have planted abundant concrete jungles( instead of trees). When the atmosphere became hot we started to use air conditioners (they cooled the inside of our house but heated the atmosphere outside). Our paddy fields which were retaining water for at least six months from the rainy season till the onset of summer . They were converted in to house sites . We demolished the hills surrounding Manglur and – flattened them and destroyed their water retaining capacity. We filled the paddy fields with the mud and rock blundered from these hills. We have looted the sand from the rivers and spoiled their natural water seepage capacity. If we list out we can get hundreds of reasons for the man made destruction of our own beloved Mangaluru… BUT NATURE WILL TAKE REVENGE FOR MAN’S ATROCITIES IN ITS OWN WAY. You will reap what you have sown.!! Unless we realize our greed oriented blunder of looting of our own habitat we cannot survive further. Have we ever thought – what kind of environment we are leaving to our own future generation ? Money cannot buy nature! We will have to nurture the nature – then only we can survive and our future generation can survive. Even Middle Eastern countries – where the nature is very harsh have realized that unless they give importance to planting trees they cannot survive for long. They have strict laws to preserve nature – in almost all countries including Middle East . Recycled waste water is being used to water trees and plants. Unless the government wakes up from its slumber and unless politicians and the citizens strictly follow the rules to preserve nature.,- better be prepared for this kind of frequent drought cycle. For the time being we do not have any other option but to repent and pray for the rains to arrive as early as possible. Without any compulsion we can start with the humble beginning of rain water harvesting and planting and nurturing at least two saplings per head immediately once the rainy season starts!!

I appreciate the public awareness drive. I would suggest the doctors concerned also to include awareness as to the environmental risk factors that significantly increase the risk for developing asthma as well as worsening the existing disease. Doctors should not forget the social responsibility of prevention of a disease. Dust, particulate matter, Vehicular and Industrial pollution, smoke in heavy urban setting can not only trigger asthma attacks but also increase the risk of developing asthma in those prone to develop it.

I have no sympathies for Vijay Mallya from the time when I first heard about him in 1985 and heard about his opulent lilfe-style and showmanship. At that time, I read an employee’s comments in the company’s inhouse magazine about Vijay Mallya’s father, Vittal Mallya. He had mentioned that his father was a shrewd businessman. The employee had mentioned that when Vittal Mallya gave him Rs. 100 with a list of things to be bought, he would take the bills, calculate the total amount spent and not spare even a one naye paise shortfall. The son turned out to be just the opposite: a playboy, spendthrift, collector of antiques, cars, women, horses and owner of luxurious yacht, aircraft and 27 houses, as mentioned by his son to Simi Grewal when she interviewed him on her programme. That programme may have been held years ago.

I do not see merit in the argument given by this corporator that different vehicles and not new vehicles being used. Sir please first look after your area – what have you done to lift the image of Kudroli area with respect to rest of the city? The second point raised is a technical issue and has to be dealt inside the MCC and it is the MCC that is responsible. Please try to understand that being a corporator is a privillege to serve Mangaloreans. Do not misuse it. The days of non performing corporators in MCC are coming to an end thanks to younger generation who demand quality and dedication for their tax money from MCC.

This unknown lady is a perfect example and explanation for the substandard journalism in our country. You know that the journalism is dead when these attention-seeking ‘journalists’ forget the golden rules of journalism and end up making themselves the center of story!! Looking at her over-the-top response (“what is the point in being a girl in this country anymore?”) to an isolated incident involving a random auto-driver shows how she is unfit to be a journalist. By her own admission, this is the first time it has ever happened to her. Still, she takes this single incident and turns it into a verdict on entire country!!! What a silly, immature behavior!!! India, especially the metros like Bengaluru, have really a liberal culture where people really don’t care about how you dress or eat. Judging an entire community based on anecdotal stories is silly at best. On a different note, here is something she can do if she is a true ‘journalist’ and truly interested in how women are treated in some circles of our society. Find a ‘peaceful’ girl and ask her to wear ‘summer’ dress. See how her community responds!! smiles…

If you read the names(http://indiankanoon.org/doc/172109185/) carefully one of the 10 trustees was also the president of Mangalore stock exchange when it was closed down because of irregularities.( http://www.hindu.com/2004/02/12/stories/2004021209950300.htm and http://archive.deccanherald.com/deccanherald/sep032004/b9.asp) 3.Govenment should give a compensation of 12 times the yearly income of Baliga to his family, so that they can survive financially in the same manner when he was alive. This money should be recovered from the killers. 4.For the complaints in building irregularities that he has filed, the Municipal Corporation and administration officials should be booked under the non vicarious clause and hefty financial fines be imposed on them so that building irregularities do not occur in future.

  • From Nelson Lewis on 'Dress What You are Wearing is Shameful' - Auto Driver tells Lady Journo

The auto-driver should mind his own business. His job is to transport his passengers and collect the fare. There are many Indians who have a village mentality, blinkered outlook and try to thrust their views on others, rather than realising that they are illiterate or semi-literate and have not travelled around and seen the lives of people of different cultures, denominations and religions. They fail to realize that the world has changed a lot. From the photograph, she appears to have dressed appropriately and the only people who can question her are her boss, if her dress does not blend with the work culture or her spouse and parents. I commend the lady Aishwariya Subramanian for taking the auto-driver’s name and putting his photo on the Facebook. Let him at least become notorious with certain people at least for a few days.

Now the Citizens had to support the group that fights against this Corrupt Project. Contractors are still using Water to Cure the concrete on site. Tankers are taking water from Pump houses. Who monitors where this water is emptied. From where the Water is coming for washing the Cars and to wash Tippers and Buses. Does any Corporator, MLA, MLC or any Water Dept. Employee cares about it. They do not want to loose the BONUS money they get. Tell about any problem to City Office(MCC) and get only answer is “I am busy now I will look into the Problem later,or I am at Meeting or function or I am in Bangalore” Call many time until get frustrated but still no result. Only positive Result I have received is from past Commissioner Miss Koralpathy and DC Ibrahim. For Example ,there is a real life threat injury problem at Bendoor well. I have brought Mr Shiva Shanker, Chief Executive Engineer on sight and He agreed to do repairs. From site He contacted His engineers to take care of the problem but almost 3 months past and I have made at least 6 trips to His office. He strictly requests His Engineer to do the need but He or She do not care. Even Shiv Shanker sent Corporator Lancy Pinto to site along with Engineer Roopa and another Engineer. Now 1 month is gone and still nothing done. Now which God should I go to pray?

Almost 10 years ago, I got very frustrated by these things, slowed down my car near Brahmarakootlu (BC Road) and asked Police why they had these things in the middle of highway. He told me the same thing – the barricades were for slowing down the speed. I asked him if they had considered other ideas such as issuing ticket to speeding drivers. He smiled and gave me a typical Indian bobble head response. I always find it fascinating as to how far behind Indian Police are in catching up with rest of the world. Oh well…

Very true. Well written and awareness presented by Alfie. We have personally experienced these barricades where suddenly out of nowhere these barricades appear on a highway without any warning signs. The traffic dept., should make sure they place it when required with proper warning signs and reflectors and should be held responsible for any hazards that may occur due to carelessness. The personnel who place these barricades should be responsible to remove them when not required and if not should be taken to task. Next time we see these barricades obstructing traffic, please be aware to stop your vehicle with a hazard sign, just remove these barricades bravely and place them beside the road to avoid accidents which will help save lives.

I studied in one of the best schools that produced students that have done well in their respective fields, be it in India or abroad, where they have settled down and a few have returned. There were also students, who were not success stories. One of the illustrious students is Anil Kapoor, the Bollywood film star who, I later learnt, stayed in Tilak Nagar, which was also the home of the notorious gangster, Chhota Rajan, who is cooling his heels these days. Our Principal was Fr. McGrath, an Irish Missionary Priest of the Redemptorist Order who went back to Ireland and died there. He was a very good educationist, who led his male and teachers very well. Fr. McGrath presided over all students in the morning during the Assembly, before we went to our classes and all late comers waited aside to be caned by this priest for coming late. I still recall very well that one day when he was presiding at the Assembly, he saw students coming late and uttered the words, “Here come the Vietcongs.” He was referring to the North Vietnamese soldiers fighting the Americans and South Vietnamese during the war raging then. However, caning was a part of discipline those days, though I would not subscribe such punishment today, because things have changed a lot. Fr. McGrath was a very good priest, fair and square personality, who would not cave in to rich and powerful parents. He was totally upright and non-corrupt and was ethical. I have nothing, but good words for this noble soul.

The authorities should also display photos of Dr. Mallya with the Kingfisher calendar girls, film actresses, politicians and others, who used to coddle him at his parties held at his residences and the yacht “Indian Empress” and other places. Dr. Mallya, as per me, is a miniature and stupid version of Aristotle Onassis, who was a shrewd business who spent and invested wisely. I wonder how the title “Dr.” is being used before his name. I wonder how successful the DC can/will be in conveying the message of the concern of all inhabitants of Kodagu. He may propose, but lets face it, the politicians are the ones who decide.

  • From Roy on Tribute to the Immortal Bard – William Shakespeare

The best way to celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday is to read his works. His descriptions of the setting of his plays are often more vivid than the films of the setting of his plays. One of my favorite Shakespeare passages is his description of Cleopatra floating on the Nile. “The barge she sat in, like a burnish’d throne, Burned on the water: the poop was beaten gold; Purple the sails, and so perfumed that The winds were lovesick with them; the oars were silver, Which to the tune of flutes kept stroke, and made The water which they beat to follow faster, As amorous of their strokes. For her own person, It beggar’d all description: she did lie In her pavilion, cloth-of-gold of tissue, O’erpicturing that Venus where we see The fancy outwork nature: on each side her Stood pretty dimpled boys, like smiling Cupids, With divers-colour’d fans, whose wind did seem To glow the delicate cheeks which they did cool, And what they undid did.”

I’m no big fan of religions. But, I have to appreciate good things when I see them. This shows how Catholic community has learned to adopt certain sanaathana traditions. The ‘hore kaanike’, the ‘chende mela’, the term ‘devaalaya’ in place of ‘church’ and men/women in traditional dress shows how there is no conflict between this group and mainstream. Nobody tries to punish these folks for these blasphemous acts!!! LOL This shows how certain religions are willing to adopt local cultures and assimilate. I know most of religious Hindus living here in US regularly celebrate Christmas!! This is why you don’t see a Hindu or Christian suicide bomber!!

I have personally witnessed bangalore-mangalore bus crew (driver and cleaner) downing a few drinks before hitting the highway!!On a different occasion, I had the misfortune of travelling in a bus, this time a govt bus, only to realize that the Bus driver was a frequent visitor to a roadside brothel near Holenarasipura!! He stopped the bus and gave us 15 mins break to grab coffee/snacks while he ran into a house only to return after 30 mins!! I remember how it made Conductor very upset resulting in a heated argument – That’s how the passengers sitting at the front row came to know the ‘secret’!! In all likelihood the real bomb threat would involve a crowded train station, market or a Hindu temple. When was the last time terrorists targeted a church in India? Had they chosen one of those more realistic targets for this mock drill, the exercise would have been more helpful. The real challenge is how you spot a bomb in a crowded, chaotic public places before a bad thing happens. You can’t teach it in an empty church!!! Pani Poori and Omlets are sold near the exit door of Public Toilet behind Kankanady Bus stand. (College Students who are supposed to be educated are gathering around these Stalls and Eating the delicious Omlets cooked in Pans washed in the Water leaks out from Bathroom ) 5. Vehicle Horn blowing is Illegal near Hospitals but Blowing LOUD Firework near 3 Hospitals (Vijaya Clinic,Tejaswini Hospital,City Hospital) at 5 AM in the vicinity of Kadri Temple is okay. Even in Udupi, the main roads and as well as bi-lanes are being constructed without the foresight for drainage and footpaths. The Public Works Minister should look into discrepancies whilst consultants carry out the designing, and whilst Contractors carry out such sub-standard construction. Pavements and drainage should be made mandatory on every road contracted – Road does not mean only for vehicles – where will the people walk, and where will the water go during monsoons? Safety Rail barriers should also be erected where there are steep heights and drops. Whilst the CM and all the politicians of Karnataka, Mangalore, and Udupi talk a lot on modernization let them not forget to know the basics of engineering and construction. All it takes is to take a walk on the main roads to understand the problem.

Your words reminded me of a joke (or probably it is based on YOUR own experiences) which goes thus: Rampanna, new to the US, stepped into a bar for a drink. Unfortunately, the regulars in the bar had a habit of picking on strangers. When Rampanna finished his drink, he found that the bike he had parked outside had been stolen. he went back into the bar, banged his fist on the table and yelled, “Which of you B******* stole my bike?” No one answered. “Alright, I’m gonna have another drink and if my bike isn’t back outside by the time I finish, I’m going to do what I did in Mangalore! And I don’t like to have to do what I did in Mangalore”, he said calmly. Some of the regulars shifted in their seats restlessly. Rampanna, true to his word, had another drink, walked outside and found that his bike had been returned outside the bar. Rampanna started the bike to ride out. The bartender wandered out of the bar and asked “Sir, before you go… what happened in Mangalore?” Rampanna turned back and said “I had to walk home”. 🙂 —————————————————————————————

It is time Coorg said enough to tourism. The tourism dept wants to promote more tourism instead of regulating what we have to international standards. Resort licences should be cancelled if they do not have waste processing facilities. Not a single piece of waste should leave the premises of the resort. It should be incinerated or processed and used as fertiliser in their gardens. And now, to add insult to injury they want to build a railway to kodagu and cut lakhs of trees so they can add a severe water shortage to the existing problems.

These actions have to be strictly punished and all these money minting owners of hotels, homestay’s and resorts have to be educated about their responsibilities. Strict laws have to be brought in to stop this irresponsible tourists and owners. However I oppose the fact that bringing railways to Madikeri wouldn’t spoil its nature and we have many hill stations with rail services which can support that. People are cutting trees to build resorts and homestay’s and it is going unnoticed from environmental policies. I only see illegal and twisted coffee plantation owners and pseudo environmentalists posing a barrier to development. Let’s educate people to keep coorg clean and allow development to flourish.

  • From Nelson Lewis on Mass Marriage at Rosario Cathedral

Mr. Ranjit D’Souza, I believe I am broad-minded, have a live-and-let-live attitude, am practical and sane and not stupid. Let me come to the point of Konkanni, since you have raised it. As regards Konkanni, in all fairness, may I correct you that it is not a language (as it does not have an indepdent script and is not widely spoken), but a dialect embraced and spoken by small sections in Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. Knowing it is very good and I encourage it for sakes of culture and tradition and am all for it. But parents living in metropolises like Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta. etc., cannot impose it on children, where it is a different ball game and life is an challenge in an utter and highly competitve world. In metropolises, the children’s studies, study of English, Hindi, a regional language and a foreign langiage and all round development takes a precedence. Considering the scenario in metropolises, few children have the time and inclination to study this dialect. Mangalore and villages in its surround are not metropolises, but remote places and backyards, cut off from the outside world, barring a few Mangaloreans who have travelled outside and are highly liberated and consider the world as their oyster and their views are not limied to happenings in Baikadi, Pangla, and Puttar. However, this dialect has little scope for employment or anything. Are you, Ranjit, in employment or business or getting your bread-and-butter or are abroad, because of your mastery in Konkanni? Put your hand on your heart and speak the truth. If that was so, then there was no need for studying English, German, French, Spanish and other languages that have international stature and are not limited to community, State or Nation. Due to your mastery over Konkanni you would have said, “Khool ja, Sim, Sim,” and that would have been your master key for all solutions. Probably, by learning and knowing Konkanni very well, one can be community’s drama actor or singer. The late Wilfy Remimbus and the few singers that one can count on one’s fingers are an exception. Wilfy Remimbus, who was very popular with certain sections of Mangaloreans and they compare his singing talents with a nightingale or cuckoo, visited an overseas counry where I was and I was given a complimentary pass by the Club President and told, “Nelson, since you are a collector of some things, including autographs, why do you not attend Wilfy’s programme and take his autograph?” I laughed and replied, “Wilfy may be a great singer for some members of his community, however, he is not even a State level singer, forget having a National or International stature and therefore his autograph has no monetary value. He is a community singer and may have toured a few countries, where Mangalorean Catholics are cncentrated. I do not personally approach personalities to collect their autographs and depend on my penmanship. I will attend the programme, but am not interested in his autograph.” I did attend the programme, was introduced to Wilfy Remimbus and spoke to him. He may have been a good soul, but i found him to be a naivete and a simpleton. If one has an autograph of Michael Jackson, he could get at least Rs. 40,000 if it were sold.

“Love triumphs….” screams the report silently burying the real story of how Aashita became Shaista!! Sure, love triumphs and so does the lazy journalism!! In an ideal world, media would have asked why the conversion takes place in only one direction? Why not Muslim convert to become a Hindu? Or, why can’t they continue to practice their own religion even after marriage? Then again, it takes some courage and learning. It takes some homework to understand the concept of apostasy in Islam. Instead, lazy journalism is always easier, right? Finally, do I believe that these two guys are in love with each other? Absolutely!! They look like two really nice individuals who fell in love with each other. I wish them noting but best. My comments are not intended to target them. Not sayin that all marriages in India are happy. We Indians take marriages very seriously and we believe in compromise and sacrifice for the sake of family. In Western culture people have no patience and they divorce over silly fights. What about those kids? See the disaster in American society. Millions of kids with no parents. Do you want the same problem in Catholics also? Mangalorean Catholics are blindly following american culture. Speaking English and no Konkani. Do you want to live with a person and make babies before marrying her? Don’t blindly follow. Not everything coming from West is good.

Mr. Ranjit D’Souza, I am very well aware that the divorce rate in America is high. This is very much catching up in India too, especially in the metropolises, cities and towns. Many Indian couples are divorcing or separating. In none-too-distant past, couples would stick around and not divorce or separate even though there was no compatibility in their marriages and life was sheer hell. This was to avoid strong social stigmas and boycotts and facing embarrassing situations from the community, society and outside world. I reckon the per capita income in America is $ 30,000 and they invite 40 to 50 people for their weddings. Whereas, India’s per capita income is a mere $ 1,600 and they invite in some cases hundreds and in some cases thousands of people and there have been cases when stadiums (where international cricket matches are played) have been booked for such events. Is this some Bandra Fair or some Camel Fair at Pushkar in Rajasthan? My penultimate para should set your doubts at rest.

Adopting American attitudes towards family and marriage is crazy. There is a tendency among Mangaloreans/Indians settled in the US to blindly adopt the values of their neighbors without thinking through the implications and consequences of the values. Almost half the marriages in America end in divorce. The statistics on out of wedlock births are shocking. Among non-Hispanic blacks, the figure is highest, at 72.2 percent; for American Indians/Alaska Natives, it’s 66.9 percent; 53.5 percent for Hispanics; 29.4 percent for non-Hispanic whites; and 17.1 percent for Asians/Pacific Islanders.

  • From NN on Mass Marriage at Rosario Cathedral

Ranjith, Enslaving wife, or husband to that matter, in the marriage is not American culture and that is one of the reasons the divorce rates are high in the US. However, those who stay married, live happy life. Marriages are personal choice and families have hands-off attitudes in USA. Age, religion, color, nationality no bar. Now a days same sex marriages are also legal in the USA. However, one has to be faithful to his/her partner — no cheating. Divorce rates are catching up in India too as women are getting educated and see the reality of life as against the cultural pressure, male domination and in-laws harassment. If one conducts a secret survey and assuming all answers are honest, the percentage of divorce seeking couple will not be less than USA, if not higher. Nelson never mentioned to follow American culture rather highlighted the unnecessary expenses incurred in Indian marriages. People show false pride and prestige by lavishly spending on weddings and then suffer financial hardship. I strongly suggest that the Catholic Bishops should pass decree saying all marriages shall be celebrated as community marriages once in a month in their respective parishes. Anyone wanted to have special celebration shall pay Rupees two lakhs to the Church which can be used for community marriage fund. Why not? My nephew paid Rs.1 lakh for photo album, Rs.20,000 to a stupid MC who talks the same thing every weddings and Rs.15,000 for lip singing pre-recorded songs. Now his wife delivered a baby and he is complaining about the temporary domestic maid to look after the mother and child for 40 days (BaLthik Posuvnk) demanding Rs.25,000. I told him that he should have used his iPhone for the wedding pictures and developed them in photo shop software!! Bha Humbug

Mr. Ranjit D’Souza, In my post I mentioned that in India, whether one can afford it or not the more the people invited for the wedding, the merrier it is. Indians has a p.c.i. of $ 1,600 but invite hundreds and thousands of people, but Americans have a p.c.i. of, I reckon, $ 30,000 but invite at the maximum 40 to 50 people. In the 1970s, a grand wedding by American stands was that of President Richard Nixon’s (of Watergate scandal fame) daughter with President Dwight Eisenhower’s grandson, because the guest list was 200. For readers who are not aware of the background of President Dwight Eisenhower, he was Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, a five star general.

I read the invitation card and this is very good. It is very helpful for the needy couples to tie the knot. I wish them all the best and a very happy and contented life. I western marriages, just limited people are invited and there is a lot of fun. Hoeowever, in Indian marrages hundreds of people are invited and weddings can be noisy and disorganized. In most American weddings, there are 40 to 50 guests from both sides. However, many Americans go for civil marriages, where two to four people are required to sign the marriage certificate as witnesses. I saw the wedding photo of a friend’s son’s wedding in America to a white lady. Probably, around 12 persons attended the wedding, including the priest or pastor.

The anti-free speech campaign started mainly by religious bigots in minority communities will backfire and create a much bigger problem in Indian society. They think it is fun when Hindu groups are targeted. But it doesn’t stop there. This kind of intellectual terrorism can be and will be abused by ruling class to suppress unpopular opinions and truth. The only solution to ‘hate speech’ is more free speech. But in India, all branches of our democracy including media and judiciary, risking their own survival, have failed to protect and promote free speech. Indian democracy is on deathbed.
