Good officers will never finish their full term in Mangaluru, when you have corrupt staff under them who try all means to get them out quickly as posible. Next time you MCC office for your work to be done, plz make sure you carry some extra cash-you may need it to bribe the clerk to get your job done.

It is shocking to know that our beloved John Monteiro is no more. We were very close during the period of working in Milagres. He was a person with humble heart. Simple and cordial in his dealings and activities. Today, we lost a very down to earth friend. I understand, a great loss to Milagres Institutions. But, he will be remembered for ever. He will remain in every heart those who know him. Our deepest heartfelt sympathy and condolences to his family, friends and relatives.

Air Marshal Cariappa has clearly explained the scary scenario awaiting Madikeri in particular and Kodagu in general. It is unfathomable how the authorities concerned could be this callous and short-sighted. Kodagu is an attractive tourist destination purely because of its unpolluted environment. All the unregulated, unnecessary and avoidable development in the name of progress is harming this very attraction. The Minister-in-charge and the elected representatives need to take note of the disaster waiting to happen if urgent corrective steps are not taken.

I have been reading this news for the last few days in various media forums. Those who said, this incident did not happen and the Taxi union Person Mr. D’cunha who gave statements to the media that this was false allegation etc etc. I am glad with the persistent efforts from the Media and the victim herself it has now been known that the Authorities are taking some action on this incident. The action should be very swift and effective so that these goons will never attempt this kind of behavior with any passengers again. Please dear friends, do not ever use the Airport taxis and this is how we can teach these goons a lesson for their life. United, we can teach these goons a lesson and teach them to behave well with Airport users. Just book the OLA /Uber Cabs direct online and you will end up saving a lot of money and comfort.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Saudi Arabia: DTM Shameer Ahmed Kudroli Elected President of First Advanced Toastmasters Club of Jubal Al Awal TMC Al Jubail

It is always nice to read the highlights of Saudi Arabia, specially as far as the philanthropic advancement thru the world of Toastmasters. So many new leaders are born in Saudi Arabia as a result of being able to operate the Toastmasters movement in the interest of enhancing the leadership styles that we all deserve so badly in the fast changing world. Toastmasters movement also encourages leadership without any kind of religious or political bias. Toastmasters allows us to respect each and every religion thru which we share our values with each other and make this world a better place to live. Saudi Arabia is therefore a place of opportunity to share so many of our God given talents and abilities and enjoy life by being able to respect one another. So much progress has been witnessed in the Kingdom as a result of exercising our leadership skills. Toastmasters therefore have a great role to play in the future, and let us therefore make the very best from what we have been blessed yesterday and today, and tomorrow will therefore be a better day from all that we have learned and enjoyed as leaders.

All the ‘nunganna’ characters are bold enough to come forward and justify their actions in getting an IAS officer transferred for the mistake of enforcing rules in Mangaluru. Great job !! A quick walk or drive through Mangaluru streets tells us enough about the competency levels of these folks. It also tells us enough about mangaloreans who keep voting for these characters. There is no surprise that our CM has sided with these ‘nunganna’ characters and got the IAS officer removed. Great job everyone!! Next time you see main streets flooded with rain water or trash piled up in every corner, please do not bother complaining. Mangaloreans deserve what they have!!

There is nothing wrong with adult women drinking or smoking. It’s an individual right. However, we should have zero tolerance towards those who break the laws, drive under influence and put others life in danger. The fact that this lady could walk away after paying Rs.2000 shows how weak our laws are in dealing with these illegal acts. We should learn from Doddanna when it comes to these things – there is no way one could have walked free following such an incident here at US.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Mangaluru: Care and Love Your Elders, Don't Abuse Them! Vishwas Trust observes WEAAD

We are glad that Vishwas Trust is fully aware of the abuse of the elderly. We are pleased to note that Dr. Olinda Pereira is looking into the matter with the help of many others in the community. It is pathetic to hear so many sad stories of family abuse. So long as the society is aware of the abuse, many volunteers may have to shoulder the responsibility to intervene and see what are some of the protective measures available within the Community. Each matter relating to the family affairs is delicate and therefore intervention is also not so easily possible. But somebody has to come forward and act as a whistle blower so that the volunteer group may step in and see what best can be done. We all are at the mercy of God so that no one goes thru the agony of ill-treatment or abuse within the family. Thank you for sharing the delicate situations that take place in many families that we would not know so easily other than articles such as these.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Udupi: Children Earn in lakhs, Parents Homeless - HRPF demands Amendments to Senior Citizens Protection Act 2007

Gatherings such as these are very useful and valuable to the community that we live so that a larger group of the community and society gets involved with the realities of life that prevail in today’s world due to affluence and quick fortunes in life. Our Indian Society, whether we are Hindus or Moslems or Christians is an unique society that values family unity. Our family values of the Orient are unique and rare that unites people of all ages and share all that we have, The only misfortune that has taken place in India over the years is the appreciation of property values where owners have realized the tremendous growth they have amassed as a result of owning and/or possessing a property. People develop new ideas of becoming rich too soon without any effort at the cost of neglecting family values and family history. This is where our Society needs EDUCATION. This is where the parents have to be very careful while dividing their properties or their wealth with their siblings. Greed and jealousy comes in the picture and people get corrupted with the thoughts of amassing everything that the family has. The more families gather together and voice their concern is to our advantage. Let not the property take our mind and heart, but let there be a spirit of compromising thought enter the mind of each individual in order to sit together and share their ideas for an united consensus so that family unity gets equal attention and justice. Good point. But to deaf ears of authorities. U turn can be allowed at the round about but not on the highway divider ends. There should be sign board barring U turns at such strategic places. Even at places where there is no round about and U turn needs to be taken at divider ends, there should be extra lane close to the divider as writer said. Also there should be signal lights at such places. But can we imagine our authorities planning these things well and implementing. Who cares? Chalta hai….

  • From Mangal on With Transfer of a Strict Commissioner, Will MCC Once Again Become 'M-angaluru C-orrupt C-entre'?

An elected body of representatives in a corporation serves a purpose not much different to that of a board in an organisation. The board in an organisation represents the shareholders, and oversees the major actions of the management. Board’s authority comes from the shareholders. Board’s actions should ultimately benefit the shareholders. Where a board exists, the shareholders cannot directly take the management to task. In a similar manner, the elected representatives in a corporation are expected to serve the interests of the electorate. Electorate has no power to take bureucrats to task. Bureaucrats report to the elected representatives. Imagine what would happen if the board members in an organisation acted a ‘party’! They could do things contrary to the interests of the shareholders. Same way, the elected representatives would be helpful to the electorate if such representatives always discussed the issues with the electorate, and not with other elected reps. Just like a board, every decision of the corporators is put to vote. If there is a majority of votes, the decision then carries and becomes binding on all. On the other hand, in a party system, the electorate is completely ignored. And the corporators have every opportunity to become a bunch of rogues.

In recent years with the increase in the number of vehicles it is no more a pleasure to drive in the crowded road and streets. However careful one may be there is always the the other unforeseen factor of reckless driving by some which are the main causes for the increase in the number of accidents.

St. Antony of Padua is termed a miracle saint. Indeed he is a saint loved, admired and honored by all sections of the society and especially by The Mangaorean catholic community. His feast is celebrated on a grand scale in Mangalore From the time I have known Saint Antony’s devotions – I recall that the services in his honor take place on Tuesdays at 6.00 p.m. at Milagris Church. Originally there used to be only one Novena Service in the evenings at 6.00 p.m which is now extended to also a morning service which takes place at 8.15 a.m. These are efficiently managed by a very good team of priests under the leadership of Father Onil D’Souza ably supported by Father Francis D’Souza and Father Peter Gonsalves. Saint Antony’s Ashram houses more than four hundred residents who are cared for by Father Onil, Father Francis and Father Peter. • From Henry James on With Transfer of a Strict Commissioner, Will MCC Once Again Become 'M-angaluru C-orrupt C-entre'?

~Mangal If all candidates are independent how will the consensus be formed on any policy objective? There won’t be a common ground so the system will be stuck in a gridlock. If no 2 people agree on one matter how is the corporation/government going to work? Everyone will blame the other and the common man will be the loser – for this reason even coalition government is not a good idea. Whether we like it or not, there has to be a majority government if at all we want the country to progress. In that sense parties do play a role, as killjoy parties will be held accountable at the following elections if they start playing tantrums – just see how people taught BJP a lesson in the last state elections. There is no other better form of governance which can remotely have a semblance of fairness when there are only finite resources. In the short term though there can be such problems which we have to learn to live with.

We have seen how corporators of mangalore city corporation manipulate fund for helping their community /vote bank . Take the glaring example of Sanyasigudda in Court ward. A sum of over 1 crore has been spent to concretise a private road haphazardly with out proper planning for underground drainage/ water line connection and another 25 Lakhs is being spent for drainage works despite an high court order clearly stating that the land is a private land and the MCC is permitted to maintain the road without affecting the rights of the owners. Clearly the corporator has some of his community members residing there as well as a powerful ex-MUDA chairman . Further the work was awarded to another party worker itself for majority of the works… Is it necessary to spend so much on private roads when the Main Arya Samj road is itself paved with interlocks and does not have a proper drainage system???

Legal Drugs and Poverty lead to robberies and killings in the USA generally, and shootouts and killings occur almost every day in some town or suburb in the USA. Guns are a fundamental right to own to defend themselves, that sadly is the number one killing machine in the USA, be it in the hands of a student in a school shoot out or in the hands of a buzzed citizen, and a lot of controversy exists on this subject. One must be extra careful not to loiter on the streets in USA, as the streets are often walked only by the poor who do not own a car or a tourist or new students in the USA.

An excellent way of life to keep healthy – particularly as you advance in age. This is an ancient system practiced and taught by YOGA GURUS for centuries. This is a way of life to keep healthy. I am glad that this fitness is now being widely sponsored in Mangalore. I had the privilege of going through a course in Yoga some years ago with the blessings of Padma Bhushan Dr. B.M. Hegde when I took up the course at Bharatya Vidya Bhavan of which I am an executive committee member

  • From Mangal on With Transfer of a Strict Commissioner, Will MCC Once Again Become 'M-angaluru C-orrupt C-entre'?

In my belief, while democracy has many flaws, the party-based representation is the beginning of all evil. The party candidates have the numbers to play all sorts of games to make the life of citizens a hell. A governing body – particularly at the corporation level – can function effectively if the corporators are all independent, and have no party affiliation. I do believe the Mangalurians must elect independent candidates in greater numbers, and dump all the party candidates.

I hope Udupi municipality will construct better roads with the help of the state government so that the car can be used properly. Dharmasthala Hegde had a Rolls Royce in the late sixties. That was no big deal as the media was hopelessly inadequate those days.If some movie star has a big car, if Sachin Tendulkar has a big car, why not Pamma? Pamma is no less than a star.He has money and he wants to enjoy it now. Let him enjoy.

I am curious to know if the same Bhatkala had expressed anger when proud son of Bhatkala (Yaasin Bhatkala) was caught ? As you all remember, he was seriously planning to launch attacks on Indians and soldiers with the help of rats from Pakstaana. In fact, he had visited Pakistaan and got trained over there. Can someone tell me if Bhatkala erupted in anger and outrage protesting against Yaseen and his actions? Sharia Shaikh, Pincode Pai, Joker Praveena….any comments?

The Bhatkali Navayaths were really our brethrine, belonging to the same common stock, Konkani, and really were peace loving. But, the RSS and the Jana Sangh alienated them on the ruse of “murder of Dr. Chittaranjan”, a RSS activist. It divided the Hindus and the Navayats as per the calculation of RSS and we still are suffering its repercussions! RSS gained grounds and Hindus lost peace and tranquillity. Thanks to RSS!

  • From Original R.Pai on Panaji: Goa's Catholic legislators to raise Yoga Day issue with CM

What we are witnessing here reinforced by posts of Manga(L), Roy and Sharia Shaikh is the fundamental difference between tolerant and intolerant ideologies. There is a direct link between yoga controversy and a doctrine of ‘true god-vs-false god’. This is the doctrine of intolerance and opposition to any outside influence and culture. Yoga, in the eyes of these guys, is a symbol of something that they don’t believe in. Yoga represents false gods to these intolerant minds. There is absolutely no reason other than religious dogma to reject yoga especially when it is taught in a non-religious fashion. I would be the first one to oppose any attempt to mix hinduism with yoga! You don’t see a buddhist, Jain or sikh opposing yoga. The opposition is coming from the same groups who have played this trick many times for different reasons over centuries. The doctrine based hatred and intolerance are being re-packaged as ‘individual choices’ in order to conceal the true ugly mindset. This is not different from opposition to teaching evolution in classrooms! Where are the true secular and progressives? Oh never mind – they are afraid to speak out as it happened during cartoon controversy!! smiles…

Original RSS should know that our law defines in an inclusive classification that “the term hindu includes a Buddhist, a Sikh or a jain”. Sharia Shaikh, Why do you and your folks always demand ‘special treatment’ and special rights when you are not the majority? Let’s get this right – your opposition to yoga is entirely based on your religious beliefs. So, you don’t like yoga, you don’t want to sing Vande mataram. You don’t respect local tradition or culture. You won’t even acknowledge that Paakistaana is our enemy nation simply because of your religious affiliation. So, do you even respect India? Who are you loyal to? Don’t be under the impression that your ‘taqiyya’ tricks are going to work here!!

    • From B. N. Pai. on Panaji: Goa's Catholic legislators to raise Yoga Day issue with CM

Original RSS asks, “Why do you and your folk always demand “special treatment” and “special rights”, when you are not the majority?” This is what was written in Golwalkar’s Book, “A bunch of thoughts”. He said the non-Hindus must accept Hinduism or quit. Original too repeats the same. RSS does not know a thing about democracy and it is dictatorial to the hilt. He asks, how in a democracy the minorities could demand anything! He does not know that the underlying principle of democracy is concord and co-existence of the different. If democracy is uniformity and homogeneity, why any elections and why any government? In such an eventuality, there is absolutely no scope or any rationale for democracy. RSS lacks common sense and it does not appreciate basic humanity, with its plurality. They are an autocratic lot, just following the “leader” meekly and humbly! They are under the illusion that they are the enlightened. Fact remains that they are the most dangerous “robotic humanoid”!

  • From Mangal on Mangaluru: Efforts by Some Councillors to Transfer MCC Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Pay off

Democracy has many flaws. One of them is that, the elected persons are supposed to be in control. And the bureaucrats are supposed to be reporting to the elected persons. Apart from many other issues cropping out of this arrangement, one sad issue is that the elected reps are more focused on their politicking and planning to win the next round than worrying about the welfare of the people who elected them. The politicking and planning to win the next round requires bucket-loads of money, which can come from the contractors. So, the elected reps need to build special relationship with the various contractors and suppliers of services. To add to this drama, we have many bureaucrats too, who run business empires as they know the ins and outs of financial deals, from the big guys to the average aam aadmi. So, there is very little scope for survival of the honest elected rep and the honest bureaucrat. It is a miracle that such individuals actually exist in a democratic setup. I do believe that Ms Korlapati is an honest bureaucrat. Hopefully experience in her job does not take her in a different ethical direction.

  • From sHaiKh mohD rizwan on Panaji: Goa's Catholic legislators to raise Yoga Day issue with CM

Dear readers, Non-Hindu may opt for their own mode of exercise or religious prayers.-Mr.Hari Prasad India is going to have Yoga Day on 21st June. Not only it is being organised by the Government itself but is being organised on a day when “Surya Devata” (Sun god) will be visible for the maximum time in the year. And of course the initiative came from Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has been travelling around the world as Hindu Prime Minister of India, distributing Gita and visiting temples. It is always good if a person is practically religious, and those who campaign against the very name of religion are no friends of morality in life. Secularism in Indian context is not the denial of religion but respect to all religions. But a secular state like India needs to either equally respect all the religions or must avoid making show of its special respect for any particular religion. But Modi Government has chosen to do exactly the same. It does not stop reminding the people that despite its avowed proclamation of all communities being equal, in its eyes Hindus (and their practices) are more equal than others. There is no denying that Yoga may be a good form of exercise like most of the rituals of most of the religions are. But Yoga is not simply a physical exercise; it is also a spiritual one and spiritual exercises involve some kind of devotion to some “supreme” entity. It would have been great if the initiative had been taken by the Hindu religious organisations rather than the government and Hindus had participated in big numbers. Hindus doing yoga can certainly be expected on average to be more morally and physically healthy than Hindus not doing it. But the truth is that Islamic practices like Namaz, Fasting, and Circumcision, Qur’anic injunctions of breastfeeding for 2 years, Islamic bans on gambling, alcohol, promiscuity, homosexuality and abortions, all have huge beneficial effect on health, with almost each one of them substantially increasing not only the life expectancy but also the standard of health. Can we then have a Namaz Day for country, an anti-Drinking, anti-gambling, anti-obscenity, anti-gay, anti-abortion and a circumcision day for the whole country? What will be the reaction of BJP if such days are celebrated in a Muslim majority state of the country like Kashmir? They can certainly agree to some of them which are not directly recognised with the name of Islam. The 5 compulsory salat(Namaz) ; “It can be seen that 48 units in 5 prayers a day will involve 96 Sajdahs, 48 rukus, 48 qayam (standing) and 74 sitting positions and 34 salams (turning neck right and left). It also involves 18 movements on the elbow joint (Takbeer), this number being much greater in Shafai and Shia schools, 248 movements (flexion and extension) of hip joints and at least 96 movements of the knees. These are approximate numbers. With these kinds of figure, the net impact on the physical, mental and spiritual health of the individuals has to be tremendous. But it must be clarified that the basic aim of the prayers is not body building; Prayers are meant for proximity with God, but God has been kind enough to design a scheme of prayers that also cause huge physical and mental benefits.” Muslims have absolutely no objection to Yoga Day. Their only argument is that they should not be persuaded to join it, and they would have appreciated more if instead of the Government, the Hindu organisations had organised it. We wish all our Hindu brothers a Happy Yoga Day and will be more than happy if we find them engaged in Yoga exercises as a routine rather than simply being a part of a one day show. At the same time we Muslims of India request RSS to organise more ‘Yoga’ in Shakas instead of ‘Lati,Trishul and bombs’ training ,so the calm minds can devote their attention more towards nation building which was absent during British Raj. Dear readers, Reddy, who once owed debtors several crores of rupees in the late 1990s, a decade later admitted that he and his wife alone have assets worth over Rs 150 crore, thanks to his illegal mining business.A number of luxury cars line the Reddy homes, ranging from Bentleys and Mercs to the latest SUVs and Range Rovers. Reddy brothers even would heli-hop between Bellary and Bangalore even for lunch or dinner. He presented a golden sword worth Rs 40 lakh to national BJP president Nitin Gadkari. The mining baron told the court that the chopper – a Bell 407 – was bought at a cost of nearly Rs 12 crore on a bank loan, after depositing a down payment of Rs 2 crore. He added that he had been paying an equated monthly installment (EMI) of Rs 10.31 lakh since 2006, and a monthly rent of Rs 75,000 to the airport authorities in Bangalore for the hangar facility alone. Reddy’s enviable collection of luxury cars boasts of a Rolls Royce Phantom worth nearly Rs 5 crore (with a Bellary town registration number KA-34-C-01), apart from Maserati, Volkswagen, BMW, Continental GT Coupea, Range Rover sports car, Mercedes-Benz limousine, Toyota Land Cruiser, an Audi and Mitsubishi Pajeros, as well as a dozen Indian cars. He also owns an imported Volvo bus, again named Rukmini, worth Rs 5 crore, especially designed for his political road shows. In other hand BJP which spent close to Rs 5 billion in last election for 2014 general election his main sponsoers include Ambani and Adani whose income steadily increasing since Modi became PM enjoying more luxury. Having always had a penchant for European cars, Mukesh Ambani owns 168. He favours the Mercedes, the Bentley and the Maybach, his most expensive car to date. But this 27-storey home has a lot more than heart. It consists of a ballroom, three helipads and a swimming pool. While thanking our American Pai trolls let him enlighten the contribution of minorities, which his RSS Guru want to treat them as second class citizen in their own nation. 16, the highest number of Muslims qualify for the National Defence Academy this year http://muslimmirror.com/eng/16-the-highest-number-of-muslims-qualify-for-the-national-defence-academy-this-year/ Last year out of 570 only seven Muslim candidates were declared qualified , making a total 1.23% while this year sixteen out of 453 candidates have qualified which makes 3.53%. A total jump of more than 100% in terms of successful number of Muslim candidates in NDA . • From Hari Prasad on Panaji: Goa's Catholic legislators to raise Yoga Day issue with CM

In Sanskrit Yoga means “to unite” ie to unite with the invisible God. Only God can teach us how to unite with him. Those who believe in God know that both God and Satan can influence our thoughts. Therefore all meditations should precede with a prayer to God so that the onus is put on God. Yoga comes from Upanishads. Surfing through the net will give voluminous information. It is in Upanishad the Yoga prayer is given to unite us with the invisible creator. It is called the Hindu prayer “Lead me from untruth to truth ,darkness to light and death to immortality ” This prayer must be made compulsory for all the Hindu students in schools .United Nations must make this Yoga prayer compulsory for all the practitioners of Yoga all over the world. It is time we reduced our dependence on the middlemen. As for the yoga exercises, the Yoga teachers must take all responsibilities for any injuries. All the salaries of yoga teacher must be borne by the government. Furthermore Yoga exercises should not be made compulsory for the Hindus till all claims regarding the benefits to the internal organs such as liver, kidney, pancreas etc are verified scientifically by AIIMS. Non-Hindus may opt for their own mode of exercise or religious prayers

Dear readers, While only smiling DV Sadananda Gowda belongs to the same village of Mandekolu village, his contribution to the village nor the state big zero.At least this brave soldier has made his village proud.BJP has already realised it early and sacked him from the union cabinet. PM Modi should consider 7 sister states of North East which has immense tourism potential. The government should review the deal with ULFA terror organisation signed by former PM vajpayee retaining weapons in exchange for autonomous .The 56 inch saheb whose government slashed the mountain strike corps cut to half has been attributed to “severe fund shortage” should wisely utilize the armed forces in the western region; instead of giving Z plus to Video Sangeet som,Ramdev and Bhagwa who enjoy millions of foot soldiers from RSS expertise in Lati,Trishul and bombs. Some girls (possibly most) can’t deal with rejections in their love life. Also, if some of them go to take an extreme step upon being rejected, I don’t think it is entirely the fault of the man. Many men go through rejections as well. That is life. Just like being rejected with an employment application. One hardly ever hears of a girl being arrested because she rejected a guy.

Atrocious on the part of the motor cycle driver to run over Sri Monteiro and then make an attempt to escape. However it will not be long before the Police nab the culprit and book him. I join several others in offering condolences to all the members of the bereaved family specially Mrs. Monteiro. It is expedient that suitable compensation is paid to the family.

  • From Mangal on Panaji: Goa's Catholic legislators to raise Yoga Day issue with CM

The Catholic legislators have a point. I don’t think they oppose Yoga in any way. Yoga, as a physical exercise routine and also with its association with mediation, will do immense good to the practitioners. I don’t think the Catholic legislators in Goa oppose this at all. What they are opposing is the globetrotter Government’s insistence that the school kids and the teachers are dragged out of their homes on a Sunday, merely because it pleases certain organisations that support the globetrotter on religious grounds and.or ill-placed emotional attachment to Yoga. It is important to see Yoga as a form of physical exercise routine. And not yet another way to impose a particular religion on others. But it is even more important to allow students and teachers to exercise their choice whether they want to practise Yoga, or martial arts or anything for that matter. India was built on the basis of personal freedom. But the globetrotter and his associate organisations are hellbent on giving a twist to personal freedom. I do not support that.

These legislators are an embarrassment to our nation. We should see yoga as part of physical education. I would be the first one to oppose any attempt to use yoga to promote any religion. Teaching yoga postures to kids is a great way to make them healthier and prepare them for life. What this incident demonstrate is a perpetual self-hating culture cultivated in our country over generations based on pure dogma and insecure religious feelings!! If the BJP party had no solid intention to build the Ram Mandir, using the Ram Mandir promise at the election rallies to pocket more votes from the electorate was a very sub-standard political character.

Our time on earth is brief, there’s lessons to be learned, Each precious day God gives us another page is turned. Every chapter full of memories, times of joy and tears, Triumphs and defeats, through every passing year. She loved us unconditionally, always by our side, When no one else would listen, in her we could confide. With gentle words of wisdom she led us on our way, Down the paths of righteousness if ever we did stray. She saw the light in everyone and gave with no regrets, Always from her heart let’s not forget. Angels come in many forms, for me it is my mom, With love I cannot say in words there’ll never be another. Every day I turn the page in my heart will ever remain, Everything she taught me as I stroll down memory lane. Thank you God for giving me the most priceless of all treasures, Help my Lord to keep alive her memory here with us forever. I pray that I can some day be everything she hoped I would, That’s she smiling down from heaven knowing she did good. As we gather here today there’s no ending to her story as, Another chapter has begun full of grace and glory. God’s called her to his heavenly home, part of his great plan, Although it may be hard, we all must understand. Faith is what is hoped for, things we cannot see, Heaven is promised to all of us if only we believe. Hey Alphie, Thanks a lot bro for the article and to say our loving mom is always in our heart instead we got all the support from you and all our relatives specially Uncle Paul D’souza Fly & Aunty Lidwin Fly, Uncle Glary & Fly, Uncle Jemma Mama & Fly, Aunty Babla & Fly, Aunty Elsie, Sullu & Fly, Suma Sanu & Sharon, Iris(Grandma) Aunty Sushma Rohan & Roshan, Aunty Norma & fly, Uncle Harry, Vijitha & Vikram, Flavy & Ryan, Eric Martis & Veera Martis & special thanks to Viola Martis & James Lobo all who supported us during this bad time…… Once upon a time an angel held my hand, She wiped away my tears and helped me understand. Thanks Alfie And Team Mangalorean for the lovely Article on Behalf of my Dad Edward Niran/Sonia, Kevin Collin Edna Emma

This guy is a topcop ? WOW! Who gives pin number over the phone? There are two good things coming out of this story: – The bad guys were caught immediately because police head himself was cheated. If it was some ordinary raama-dhooma, it wouldn’t have happened for Rs.10,000!! – Shows the competency levels of our top officers who are supposed to keep us safe. This guy clearly has no idea on how to handle private, confidential things.

Surprise surprise! It happened to Head of the law enforcement division after he gave his pin number over phone to a stranger pretending himself as an employee of the bank. With all his experience and dealings with similar cases, it is rather stupid for anybody, let alone the Head of the police department, to provide pin number over phone even if asked by the bank employees. He deserved to lose the money withdrawn but did not by virtue of his position and the resources he has.

He is well known for his sincerity of heart and mind. He was the one who put up the tallest building in Bondel a few moths ago. Starting as a simple but honest and determined builder over thirty years ago he has come a long way and is today is A PERSON OF NAME AND FAME not only in Mangalore but all over Karnataka and perhaps India. Siraj is blessed with great qualities of heart and mind and is now fully supported by his two sons. There is an old saying that BEHIND EVERY SUCCESSFUL MAN there is a WOMAN. Here is Father Francis Gomes – a person of GREAT QUALITIES OF HEART AND MIND. During his stint of many years in Puttur, he indeed rendered wonderful service to The Community. The best gift one can another is THE GIFT OF EDUCATION and this is exactly what Father Francis has done in his life and career. He is remembered with love and admiration in Puttur and I am told that he had a tearful send-off from that area. During his three years stint in Mangalore he gained the love, admiration and respect from all those who came in contact with him. The large number of people who accompanied him to Mulky on his re-location is a an indication of their admiration and regard for this educationalist. He has left behind great and loving memories behind. May God help him in his future assignment.

In western countries people / government try to preserve natural beauty which they have very less but in India we have so much natural beauty people/government try to ruin it. I had been to madikere when harengi dam was under construction, I loved it but last year I visited, its all gone, If this happens in couple of years madikere will be concrete town losing all beauty.

Dear Mr.Prashanth nayak, My comments are not meant to disrespect the good of the organisation. These days ‘Swatch Bharath’ which is stolen from Father of nation Gandhi just to rebrand for phoshops. As a Indian first we must have respect to our mother country. You can’t sell ‘Beatle leaf’ ask the user to carry spit bin together. The lack of awareness is missing from the very young age and school education. We Indians have very good civic sense when in foreign nation than in our own motherland. No matter how many sundays of calendar year is spent on cleaning, unless we don’t educate the filth overflowing again before it is cleaned. The infrastructure and waste management is one of core area need immediate attention. It won’t take much time once ‘Garden city’ of Metropolis with row of flower blossoming tree and lakes to be renamed as ‘Garbage city’. When Gandhi has no bar for cleaning his own toilets, just stealing his ‘Goggles’ just make India ‘Swatch’.The mission needs to spread awareness from the pan chewers to open toilets under the blue skies. This why cleaning ‘Gangs’ is utter failure of PM Modi’s mission, when we dispose dead bodies citing religious angle and drink the same water as holy were industries let affluent. Jai hind

The picture painted by Air Marshal Cariappa of the future of Madikeri and Kodagu in general is frightening. But all one has to do is look around Madikeri town and its surroundings to see that its just a matter of time before the Air Marshals fears come to pass . JCBs cutting through once picturesque hillocks for constructions and layouts are a common sight. This degradation will continue as long as the authorities in charge have only a myopic view and no long term plan for the well being of Kodagu and the environment . For those of us who love Kodagu , its indeed a sad sight.

  • From Rakesh Sharma on What is Kodagu’s Future in the Years Ahead? - Asks Air Marshal K C Cariappa

The Air Marshal has raised many valid points and asked an equal number of questions. Sadly, most of his questions can be answered at one go. We are in this mess because our regulatory bodies celebrate their appointments, not because it gives them a chance to protect the public and ensure their greater good but, instead, they view their appointment as an opportunity to subvert and run aground all efforts at sustainability and eco-conservation for pecuniary benefits – to themselves. The Ministers in charge of these portfolios (Environment, Tourism, Transport, Town Planning etc.) at State levels at least, do not know better or, if they do; do not care, for they are all a part of this ill gotten ‘food chain’. I am afraid that most of Air Marshal Cariappa’s fears will come true in the very near future just as he has pointed out. I am also sure that when things reach such a pass that action just HAS to be taken, to repair our broken system, the late intervention will be cosmetic and inadequate. We elect our Ministers while the civil servants are paid out of the exchequer financed by us tax payers. We expect this team to protect our short and long term interests; to be pro-active, to look ahead, anticipate and block the greed of insensitive builders and developers. Instead, we see this team running helter skelter to set right situations that should never have occurred in the first place. They seem to be very good at closing the barn door after the horses have bolted. If that is all this team is capable of, we would be doing as well by electing scythes and paying stable hands out of the exchequer instead!

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Mangaluru: MLC Ivan D'Souza Inaugurates 'INLAND Espana' at Bejai

Congratulations to Inland Buildings of Mangalore for joining the team of many other Builders and creating an additional feather on the bonnet of Architecture in Mungalooru. The buildings are increasing and the design and quality of architecture is also changing for better thereby creating additional charm for the City of Mangalore. As Shriman Ivan D'[Souza indicated, it is nice for Inland Builders to be transformed into Inland International. Adaption towards the Building codes in the International world is slightly different from that prevailing in India. For instance, the United States has different codes and different restrictions attached to any kind of architecture that is introduced on any land that anyone wishes to develop into a Housing or a Business or even a Recreational concept. Development of broad roads with suitable provision for power lines, water lines, gas lines, telephone lines, and even fire hydrants for fire hazards is all a MUST before any permit issued for any other development. Each and every development is attached with a TAX. Even when the construction of any development is commenced, the City demands that under no circumstances the daily life of the City is disturbed in any form, including the normal passage for human beings to pass without any hindrance or safety hazard. Anykind from the construction debris has to be removed without fail. Non-compliance of any of the above Rules are heavily fined and therefore any or all construction of any kind or size have to abide by the Rules. Any deviation of City Codes due to any under-hand dealings will face serious consequences including imprisonment. It is a fascinating experience to witness the code of ethics that go along with building of any dwellings in the United States. Above all the above factors, even the ENVIRONMENTAL requirements are strictly maintained so that there is no pollution of any kind due to any kind of violation. All these factors are very important for any consideration when it comes to construction. That is why and how the Towns, Cities and the Mega Cities are designed and implemented. All these requirements are so very useful for a short term and long term life of a Community as a whole. Once the project of any construction is completed then comes the collection of garbage and disposal. The State, the City and the Community are all part of the “Maintenance and Order” for people to live and live happily with systems and order. God bless the Inland Builderrs in all their future endeavors.

It is a very sad and disturbing issue. A stitch in time would have saved lot of embarrassment to the faithful and the clergy. It is a lesson to all of us. When the parish priest chooses to ignore the provisions of the constitution of the parish council, the faithful choose to remain silent and the authorities choose to close their eyes, the inevitable has to happen. Eternal vigilance alone will keep the machinery on its right track. Transparency should be the sine qua non of the Catholic church, priest being the model of Christ. I wish that the issue is handled by the diocesan authorities as per the Canon law. Accountability of public funds is the basic tenet of Christianity. Let the bishop demonstrate that he tolerates no injustice by conducting an impartial inquiry and take appropriate action to redress grievances of the parishioners. Let this episode serve as an eye opener to both the faithful and the clergy.

  • From Mangal on Mangaluru: Tulunada Rakshana Vedike Stages Protest to Ban Maggi Noodles

I wish all success to the Vedike with their protests, burning of flags and posters, and any other activity that will make them healthier and happier. But I think they are terribly mixed up with the story with the noodles. They have equated “a harmful chemical content” to “monosodium glutamate” which again is equated to “lead”. May be the Vedike folks have found out something new to science. All the best with their research. Just a side note. The Chinese, Koreans and the Japanese have been consuming huge quantities of MSG (I think the Japanese started it with the brand of Aji-no-moto) for a hundred years. And they are among the world’s healthiest people. What the Vedike folks may not be aware is that MSG occurs very naturally, and plenty of it is found in tomatoes, potatoes and many other vegetables. Talking of which I might also add that miniscule quantities of lead is found in many foods, especially fish. None of which has been sent to the laboratories. Imagine what the laboratories will find if the dried fish from our own Kudla is sent to the laboratories! I think I will happily eat the branded noodles (although in actual fact I have not eaten them at all) any time, but will think a 100 times before consuming Kudla’s dry fish.

  • From Francis on Mangaluru: Allegations by Some Cordel Parishioners are Baseless - Fr Valerian

It’s quite evident that there have been irregularities on finance management. Though I am not from that area, I have kept close watch of the construction activities that were taken by the priest including a failed attempt to demolish and re-build the church building during his tenure. Majority of the clergy have been highly successful in divide and rule and thus have been successful in swindling people’s money for personal gains. Sadly there are some good priests who abide by their religious oath. I still believe we the people are to be blamed. As long as we are not united and give ourselves to be divided and ruled we will be robbed. At this parish I hope people will come together to get the ex-parish priest to pay up for the deficit. It’s time that we realize we can help the poor and needy directly without having to give money through a religious institution and any work related to construction or maintenance activity can be undertaken by the people. Let’s open our eyes and be practical..!

What one can gather from the detailed report is that there has been large scale diversion/siphoning of of church funds collected in the name of development from the faithful!! Unlike earlier times when people used to say, whenever such instances took place like God will give justice, nowadays the scenario has changed and the faithful are fed up of such incidents taking on a regular basis albeit on a smaller scale!! His highness the Bishop should demand for a thorough probe in the interest of the sanctity of the church and the blind trust reposed by the faithful in the admininistration of the church and get the true picture in front of the laity!! If such type of nefarious instances continue happening more and more of the hardcore faithful will lose trust in the church as has already happened in most advanced countries!! The question is how far can the stark truth be suppressed by inducing the fear of God, forgiveness because one is a priest etc., it is going to balloon to a big issue in the times to come as the faithful do not get satisfactory answers for their queries as they have the full right to ask for the same as the church belongs to each one of its parishioners!! Hope better sense will prevail and the entire truth is brought in front of the faithful!! Jai Hind!!

I wish many more had zero tolerance towards corruption the way you do!! @ Max and Jessi – A small correction. Rain is an act of nature, not God. The weather forecast is getting better every year and they can forecast the events to a greater accuracy with the help of faster computers and algorithms. Most of the chaos you see in our cities are due to a incompetent leaders, officials and our depressing tolerance towards corruption!!

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Mangaluru: Monsoon Arrives with a Big Bang, Heavy Rains with Thunder and Lightning Lash District

Rain is an act of God. Rain is a blessing for every country, particularly populated countries such as India where water is a precious commodity. Due to lack of proper drainage or proper conservation methods of saving the precious water from rain, there will always be disruption for the road traffic due to accumulation of water. Just last week Houston and Dallas, Texas were flooded with ten feet of water by blocking major highways and skyways and disrupting the movements for several days. Thousands of homes in low levels were drifted away. Thousands of vehicles that got caught with heavy water tide on the broad highways were virtually under water after floating in the water like toys. When torrential rains hit the City unexpectedly, weather forecasts become redundant and you are at the mercy of God so that your home is saved and your family is safe. In times of weather crisis or any other major calamity that takes place beyond human control, it is advisable to remain calm and peaceful and render a hand of help to all those that are at the helm of their responsibilities in the Cities or Counties or even Punchayats. All said and done, we need rain for our daily survival. We need our water wells to remain safe, and so also our water pipes and water tanks. We need to save ourselves from the insects or mosquitos that sprout as a result of the stagnant water by timely spraying insecticides. Meanwhile let it rain, let it rain, so that our rice fields become wet and that our farmers will be able to toil and bring us the gift of the season that will last us for our year long needs. Let our rivers get filled with enough rain water, and so also our water wells and lakes. Let us find more ways to conserve the rain water so that the water can be used in proportion from season to season. Let our City fathers bring some more water experts so that they can think of some timely measures and save the people from any major disaster. God bless.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Mangaluru: Raknno Prakashan books released and editorial responsibility handed over

RAKNO has been a household name that brought the news, particularly relating to the Diocese of Mangalore much before any other Konkany Newspaper surfaced in Mangalore. After Rakno, I remember, came “Pionnari”, “Mithr”, “Umalho” and many other weekly publications. Rakno has enlightened us with the Parish News as well as the general news of Mangalore much before we had the benefit of the All India Radio or any other News medias. Rakno was also privileged to have some good Editors who were priests that lived at the Bishops House and covered a wide media that helped the Christians as to what was going on in the Diocese and elsewhere. To the best of our recollection, the Konkany media has played an excellent role in the community of Mangalore. We do not recollect any kind of negative messages that came out of Rakno. The subscription was also quite low and my father could afford to subscribe for the Rakno that brought essential news from the Parishj as well as from the Diocese with essential announcements that kept us informed of all the essential ‘tid-bits”. Thank you, Rakno, for your dedication towards our Community, and also the link of events that you thoughtfully conveyed to the Christian people of Mangalore. You were the best guide of the Community and you reflected the name “Rakno” very well by connecting the Mangalore Diocese with the people.

  • From Anand Dsilva on Thou Shalt Not Steal! 'Parish Priest Scammed Over Rs 1 Crore of Church Funds' say Faithful

Kulshekar parish has a notorious history of confrontation with their priests from long time whoever has been the vicar there. I am not a fan of priests but doubt the above could be a perception. Why it was Rs 1 crore not Rs 90 lakhs or not Rs 1.25 crores. When a priest assumes role of a vicar in a new parish there are lot of expectations and changes that need to be made. He has to take the lead and then parishioners comment. The priest is so old so why would he swindle this much money at his age when he has no family of his own. The priest is not directly responsible in handling finance and I am sure there are book keepers to do the job. Has he confirmed that Rs 1 crore has been swindled? Normally people know about the income but do they know the expenditures too? Bigger the church more the expenses on day to day maintenance. If one carefully observes the collection box (tithing) on Sunday most people still put coins or small denomination notes. This money meets only the candle, electricity and other expenses of running the church.

Dear readers, This is an classic example of ‘Suit boot ki sarkar’. A policy paralysis government luxury, gifts are part of BJP Dharbar surpassing even ‘Queen of England’ and Mughal empire. As evidence to meaningless expenditure; ‘Amazing atmosphere at the reception hosted by Indian High Commissioner in Colombo. PM is interacting with guests.’ -PMO India’s Twitter Modi govt’s travel bills at Rs 317 crore, at par with UPA’s average spend http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Modi-govts-travel-bills-at-Rs-317-crore-at-par-with-UPAs-average-spend/articleshow/46648612.cms The Narendra Modi government in its inaugural year has incurred a travel bill of Rs 317 crore, according to the revised budgetary estimates. This is about Rs 59 crore more than the Rs 258 crore the UPA-II cabinet had spent in its last year in office (2013-14), but in keeping with UPA’s average spend on the head through its five year-term. This travel bill includes expenditure on travel by cabinet ministers, ministers of state and ex-PMs and maintenance of aircraft used by VVIPs: the ones used by Prime Minister, President and Vice President. At Rs 14 crore, the salary and allowances bills of the 65-member Modi’s council of ministers have been almost the same as that of the 75-member UPA cabinet. The expenditure of the PMO, though, has gone up to Rs 40 crore in 2014-15, compared to Rs 31 crore of UPA’s last year in office. Information sought on Modi’s foreign travel expenses ‘too vague and wide’ to be revealed, RTI reply from PMO says http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Information-sought-on-Modis-foreign-travel-expenses-too-vague-and-wide-to-be-revealed-RTI-reply-from-PMO-says/articleshow/46561753.cms Of the 220 days in office last year (from May 26, 2014 to December 31, 2014), Modi was abroad for 24 days. This means he was in a foreign country ONCE IN NINE DAYS since he became the Prime Minister. Though the PMO now stonewalled queries related to the money spent on Modi’s foreign tours, in 2013 it disclosed the amount spent on the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s air travels expenses — Rs 642 crore in nine years. The amount was revealed under the mandatory proactive disclosure clause of the RTI Act. The globe trotting PM Modi’s one year travel expenditure is already touched Rs 380 crores half of MM Singh’s spending in 9 years. The government has ordered a cut of nearly 20% in its 2014-15 healthcare budget due to fiscal strains, putting at risk key disease control initiatives in a country whose public spending on health is already among the lowest in the world.India spends about 1% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on public health, compared to 3% in China and 8.3% in the US. The United Nations estimates about one third of the world’s 1.2 billion poorest people live in India. A PM Modi’s ‘Aache Din’ already taking toll with hike of 14% in service tax and railways. This Governor walked out of the hall while the national anthem was singing. But spending Rs. 2.4 crore for renovation and Rs. 10 lakh for charter flight etc…….. the old British royalty parade in India would be regretting while watching the current Indian royalty parade of the politicians. When the lists of the travel, attachment to the Raj Bhavan and the number of relatives came to visit the Governor of Kerala in the previous administration was a staggering amount. In my younger days, I have watched some chain-smokers, they had to keep emitting the smoke from their mouth and through the nose like a coal factory. When I saw them dying earlier in life, I was confused, why those healthy rich people were dying too early in life? One rich Doctor and a well known studio owner died early in life without any apparent reason; the doctor due to heart attack and the studio owner due to cancer which was quite rare in those days. Two of the mass killers of humanity are smoking and liquor consumption. How many millions are dying, spending long duration in the hospital and wasting money for mere smoking? There must be a massive campaign to stop the deadly stylist epidemic of smoking. Since the author had to meet many people affected with the smoke-related diseases, the article was explicit and comprehensive.

Very interesting article. God has given us an abundant supply of creativity; but the saddest thing is the misuse of the creativity for undermining and destroying the society. Through injecting fear and lies about the other group, the virus of hatred is sown, and that will grow up every day; more feedback from evil spirited people will make small seed into a big deadly plant which can destroy and kill many. When we learn about some of the most ruthless autocrats of history, how they began to grow in bitterness-hatred and the fun of bloodshed of the innocent people. On the other hand, when we study the life story of some of the greatest humanitarians, they took a different path of loving the humanity and God used them to wipe the tears of the millions, besides their life story will motivate and inspire the posterity to be honorable humanitarians.

  • From shaiKh moHd rizwan on This Thing Called Cancer

Dear readers, In Eastern democracies like India, the public image of a political party often matters more than its actual performance. The party image revolves around three pivots. The first is: How clean is the government? Then how strong is it in protecting national interest on the security front? The third and unfortunately the least important is: How has the government performed in core areas of governance and economy? By all accounts, the Modi government would get a high score if one were to compare its performance in core areas and the economy with the first year of previous governments. But this too has come under attack now with a parliamentary committee headed by the BJP MP from Ahmednagar in Maharashtra, Dilip Kumar Gandhi, clearly marching to the tune of the tobacco lobby in the country, which is responsible for 9,00,000 deaths every year due to tobacco-related diseases, mainly cancer. The committee was to decide by April 1 whether the size of the pictorial warning on the cigarette packet should be increased to over 80 per cent from the current 30 per cent. The tobacco lobby had been politically active trying to derail the proposal as studies have found that the advertising and pictorial campaign against intake of tobacco has great psychological impact on smokers and tobacco chewers, thus dissuading them to leave tobacco and affecting the sale of tobacco products. Gandhi virtually gave in to the pro-tobacco lobby at great cost to the BJP government’s clean image at the centre by deferring the decision. Gandhi said, “There is no Indian survey report to prove that tobacco consumption leads to cancer. All studies are done abroad… We have to study the Indian context, as four crore people in states like Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh are dependent on bidi-making through tendupatta”. Have your say. You can comment here.Gandhi’s sweeping statement that left the BJP leaders red-faced triggered speculation. The most virulent among them was whether the honest Dr Harshvardhan was deprived of the health ministry portfolio because of the pressure of the tobacco lobby and whether the present health minister JP Nadda was also allegedly batting for the gutka czars whose lifestyle marked by expensive cars and Bollywood style mansions has often been the envy of many in the corporate world. Nadda, of course, reiterated his government’s resolve to increase deterrents against tobacco consumption. This demonstrated by the government of “propagating and promoting tobacco lobby” in India to common man’s peril and wondered whether former Health Minister Harsh Vardhan was removed from the ministry last year due to his anti-tobacco stand.Who is responsible for putting a beedi baron whose annual turnover is over Rs 200 crore on a parliamentary panel that was to decide the fate of millions of Indians? Will the person be held accountable? Why didn’t the panel speak to any doctors, health experts? Why didn’t the Health Ministry not give any formal evidence to the committee? Will the Prime Minister, who tweeted so passionately on World No Tobacco Day give a personal commitment that India won’t go back on 85 percent warnings? Won’t a revised 60-65 percent notification be a victory for the tobacco lobby? “Modi government is actively pursuing the policy of propagating and promoting tobaco lobby in India to the peril of the common citizen. A “penny to make dollar to sell” of tobacco lobby is already addicted to the different genders regardless of age.The opening budget of PM Modi government has unexpectedly ordered a near 20% cut in India’s healthcare budget for the current financial year, owing to financial constrains. Over 60bn rupees ($947m, £609m, €775m) has been slashed from the Health Ministry’s budget allocation of around $5bn for the financial year ending 31 March, 2015, an unnamed ministry official told Reuters. The move could jeopardise crucial disease control initiatives in a nation whose public spending on health is already among the lowest in the world. The UN has estimated that about a third of the world’s 1.2 billion poorest people live in India, Asia’s third largest economy. To rub salt to the injury PM Modi’s ‘Sab ka sath, sab ka vikas’ gifted common man by increasing Cancer drug price from Rs 8,000 to Rs 1.08 lakh. Cancer drug price goes up from Rs 8,000 to Rs 1.08 lakh http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-cancer-drug-price-goes-up-from-rs-8000-to-rs-108-lakh-2022667 A policy paralysis governance driven by super brain economist like Jaitly,Junior Sinha,Arun shourie, should explain the nation, how does this government will shoulder budget of staggering 90,000 crores per annum to run ‘BULLET TRAIN’ which slashed health budget citing financial constraint to one of lowest in the world? When there is no need the parish priests go ahead with various constructions in the churches. Where the hall rent goes? The people pour money when the priest announces from the altar. Priests use the trick of curse whoever stands for justice. In these types of scams who has to curse whom? It is high time that people take over financial matters and priests handle only spiritual responsibilities. Kumsar kumgar, resper, baptizm santuksanv. Otherwise bigger scams will follow. There are examples of priests asking the donors to write the cheques to their personal name. People should demand receipt for their donation.

What a pleasure to learn that the 116th Parish is now born under Mangalore Diocese and that the new Parish is named as Saverapura near Katpadi. A small monument has now been created in a remote area for the benefit of a few dozens of Catholic families where the presence of God will continue to shower His blessings upon the people in a place where St. Francis Xavier will bring his special blessings upon the priests that will continue to bring renewed faith and peace amongst people. The priests responsible in conducting the religious services in remote areas have a tremendous task to shoulder because of so many scarcities and difficulties. The priests act like the “uncrowned Governors” of the Punchayat Raj by joining hands with handful of parishnors and asking God’s merciful hands to be placed upon the simple village where the faithful will show to the World that God’s presence is everywhere. We have had the privilege of visiting the Alangar Church a few years ago just to listen to the wonderful choir that they perform on every Sunday morning. The CD that they sent us is still being played in our simple household and the wonderful voices and the lyrics are very much enjoyed by all of us. We would like ton visit SAVERAPURA some time whenever convenient. We are great believers in visiting new Churches because they say that God has greater listening power in a New Church, and the favors are granted by God much quicker than the older churches. That;s why whenever we travel abroad, all over the world, we always make it a point to visit a new Church and place our humble cravings before God for swifter blessings.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Mangaluru: He Came, He Saw, He Conquered Hearts of Milagreans! Fond Farewell to Fr FX Gomes

Thanks, Alfie, for your detailed article on Fr. Felix Gomes who is retiring from Milagres High School after a successful assignment. Intellectuals and Administrators involved in the Educational field find it very painful to leave the school environment where they nurture hundreds of students and groom them to be successful in their career assignments. Teaching is a most delicate assignment where an individual gives the very best to the Institution, and once they create a strong bond with not only the students but also the faculty members it is very painful to say ‘good bye’. Educational values instilled by the individuals towards an Institution find it very difficult to move to another location. All said and done, Fr. Felix Gomes will be missed at Milagres School. He will be an asset in the new Institute that he has been selected to move, and many other hundreds of students will be benefitted by his teachings and his wise leadership. Life is a transition that takes us from one end to another thru a journey that has so many ups and downs. Parting with an Institution that one gives the very best has lot to suffer, but ultimately the new place gets the benefit, and the life goes on. I havd spent three years at Milagres from the year 1949 to 1951, and I distinctly remember when one Fr. Pinto, the powerful and disciplined Headmaster stepped down from his position and his place was taken over by one Fr. Rasquinha. Meetings and partings are all part of the emotional journey one has to go thru. Thank you, Fr. Felix, and wish you best of luck in all your future undertakings.

  • From Rohan D on Thou Shalt Not Steal! 'Parish Priest Scammed Over Rs 1 Crore of Church Funds' say Faithful

Its quite unfortunate that the clergy is galvanized by peoples sentiments and not to mention inaction of our Mangalorean Bishop Today there is no accountability of funds received from believers. There is no check on personal expenses of clergy, foreign trips etc No control of commercial activities like ‘renting church hall’ (not to mention exhorbitant charges) Attitudes of clergy these days are like zamindars. They like to be served. If I’m not wrong the role of this priests in police atrocities in Kulshekar church is also questionable.

I am glad to hear about the new church of Saverapura dedicated to St.Fracis Xavier. I have known the Redemtorist priest Fr. Eugene Dsilva for the last 17 years and these priests are doing an excellent job. The current priest Fr. Rakesh Matias is from Karkala and is a brother of our Famous konkani activist Vittori Karkala. God bless Fr. Rakesh’s parents for offering Fr. Rakesh to the service of our Lord. I wish Fr. Rakesh and parishioners of new Saverapura church all the very best and Our lord’s choicest blessings on them so that under their able leadership, may the new church come up and flourish to the new heights.

Fr. Valerian Pinto is one of the most charismatic and fearless priests our Mangalore diocese has at the moment. I have known him since my childhood when he was the parish priest of Nakre Church as I had constant interaction with him due to our church youth activities. He is an able administrator and considered to be a strong orator. His works speaks of his ability and especially the way he handled the Church affairs during the infamous attrocities against Christians during the previous BJP Government in Karnataka. It is bit hard to believe that he has swindled the Church funds for his personal use. I only hope the truth comes out soon and our trust in our Clergy’s restored.

Interesting! Many may not be aware that over fifty years ago, the Kallugundi church near Sampaje on the DK-Kodagu boundary, which is also dedicated to St Francis Xavier, had the name ‘Saverapura’ given to the place by the-then parish priest, the late Fr Leo Cutinha. It has not somehow been used by his successors. Fr Cutinha also had the credit of giving the school run by the church which is dedicated to ‘Little Flower’ St Theresa a name with an ethnic touch – ‘Kiriya Pushpa’ in Kannada. Just thought of giving the man his due.

Oh Mr. Pai, MLA Lobo alone cannot make Mangalore a cleaner city. We need to keep cows, dogs and other animals off the street. Defecating in public must be made a punishable offence. Modi should provide places to plug-in for those who cannot control their bowel movement. Cleaner city starts from you, me and then MLAs with self discipline. The Chaddiwalas should keep cows away from city and collect “Gomoothra” for curing the cancer. Export all the stray dogs to Philippines. Then again, you may not like this because of your ardent love for “Mookapranis” If we do not do anything positive to keep the city clean, apart from blaming the MLA Lobo, we will remain as Mookapranis too. This is the difference between you and me. Go back and read my comments – I supported Mr.Lobo when he ran for election because I thought that the BJP MLA (Mr.Bhat) and state BJP govt had utterly failed. I was hoping that Mr.Lobo with his clean image would deliver. So far, it has been a disappointment. Prohibiting religious conversion is a solid violation of the fundamental human freedom charted by the U.N. in 1945. If the 300 million Dalits are converting to other religions, they will be getting more opportunity to get educated and to be free from the religious slavery. This religious slavery has an underlying economic vested interest; thus to keep the lowest sector of the society as voiceless slaves for ever. The anti-conversion proponents will not dare to question a well to do or educated person in his or her choice to change religion.

All Citizens of Mangalore as well as Karnataka even, please note that any problem regarding Public will not be solved without rubbing hands of Public Servants. Telling Corporators is like riding on the Donkey, whether it will reach the destination or it will come back to where it started. Sometime back while digging for Cable laying near Kadri Pumpwell, near Mangalorean.Com writer Mr. Alfie’s house,(opp. Inland Monarch)diggers hit the Water Line. They simply wrapped it with cloth and left. I have confronted them regarding this but they did not care. I have informed Don’t Care Lady Engineer, Executive Engineer who is retired recently,Mayor Rajni’s office, and Water Dept. Engineer. Duplicated the calls again and again without result. Finally the ground started saturating, and flowing under the house of Mr. C.Nazareth and exited from Kadri Road to Kambla Road,Near Soans Workshop. Even the local Corporator did not care even after MCC informed Him. Just imagine the Volume of Treated Drinking Water was washed down the ground. Corporators and other elected officials are for Ribbon Cutting,Hand Rubbing and Photo on Banners Publicity(may be a free apartment and or a new Santo car.). Who cares attitude of MCC officials is cause of Concern. Only Hope is Mr JR Lobo and Present City Commissioner with their tough stand.

The events like this happen everywhere, in India, developed or developing countries, rich or the poor. When we cannot control our own family members, how can we expect Modi or any other superman, even with a chest measuring 100″, could control the vast number of people in a democratic and poor country like India, with divergent interests, values and ethics.

Dear Dr. Maya, I would like to add a little to your write-up by way of a positive response. In India we do not have a regulated and self-regulating public sphere as in the West. Just take the education field you have written about: In South Canara you have several private education empires: the Catholic empire, the Dharmasthala empire, the Poojary empire, the GSB empire, the Brahmin empire and the Bunts empire. Each of these empires is only interestd in 100% result and money-minting. Given this, what would you expect? As for students, in South Canara as elsewhere in India, not many would know the difference between a Kuvempu University correspondence course which assuredly gives you 79-80% and doing the same course in a good univesity under qualified professors (who may not give away first classes).

Well said lecture, to put into practice; Oh, you pundiths, nuns, teachers!! Not only corporal punishment but/and also the following points to consider. Children Learn What They Live By Dorothy Law Nolte, Ph.D. If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive. If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves. If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy. If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence. If children live with tolerance, they learn patience. If children live with praise, they learn appreciation. If children live with acceptance, they learn to love. If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves. If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal. If children live with sharing, they learn generosity. If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness. If children live with fairness, they learn justice. If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect. If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them. If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.
