I agree with and standby the DC/DEO, Mr.Senthil, decision not to shift the dates and create further confusion in the chaos known as “India”. My official records proclaim my religion to be Roman Catholic. Therefore, I assume I fall under the category “Christian”. I, hereby, declare that I do not know nor have I ever met this group of people who claim to represent “The Christians”. I have not given them any authority to speak on my behalf or to represent my views. Just as people belonging to a “religion” shun being associated with terrorists and their acts. Similarly, it should not be assumed that some people represent the thoughts/acts of all the people affiliated, by whatever means, to a/any community. I fail to see how Article 25 is being violated by the ECI. It should be remembered that this election is being held in 7 phases over close to a month all over India, so somebody somewhere in India is going to be affected in some way, or another, considering that India is a country that is “mad for religion”! Religion is a private affair and it should not interfere with public activities.

  • From Melroy C.F.Fernandes on Inadequate Representation of Christians in Lawmaking Bodies both at the Center and States

The article trips over itself and the author contradicts himself and his stated intentions. Indians who wish to better their life must stop thinking of getting their govt. entangled in their religion, caste etc.; all they ought to think of is for their govt. to provide them with “rule of law” , nothing more – nothing less(includes the best service standards of the police, the armed forces, the judiciary, the administration, common amenities).Period. As a citizen in a democracy we elect our representatives for the express purpose of making or modifying laws in sole conformity with the Constitution so as to provide us all “the rule of law” ( i am talking about laws as those acceptable in any civilized progressive society as commonly accepted in secular democratic republics all over the world and not those of psychopathic tyrants or religious fundamentalists) Religion is something private and personal and you don’t want the govt. involved in that just as you don’t want the govt. in your bathroom, bedroom and toilet. Separation of religion and state is an essential tenet of a republic. Tyranny of the “minorities”(self-labelled) is the corollary of the tyranny of the “majority”. The Constitution of India has adequate safeguards for all future generations including the past[ considering that the author himself could join the IAS(unless he got in based on some reservation and not his own merit), then he attained the post of CS by way of seniority (unless he attained it by other means ,e.g.: sycophancy), then he even became a minister ( perhaps he was elected by the people of some constituency unless he became a minister due to some other consideration)]. Well, besides him, as an ordinary citizen, I ,with a Roman Catholic name, have never ever experienced any discrimination whatsoever anywhere in India! The Constitution of India: Article 15. (1) The State shall not discriminate against any citizen on grounds only of religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth or any of them. 16. (2) No citizen shall, on grounds only of religion, race, caste, sex, descent, place of birth, residence or any of them, be ineligible for, or discriminated against in respect of, any employment or office under the State. Right to Freedom of Religion 25. (1) Subject to public order, morality and health and to the other provisions of this Part, all persons are equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess, practise and propagate religion. 26. Subject to public order, morality and health, every religious denomination or any section thereof shall have the right— (a) to establish and maintain institutions for religious and charitable purposes; (b) to manage its own affairs in matters of religion; Protection of interests ofminorities. 29. (1) Any section of the citizens residing in the territory of India or any part thereof having a distinct language, script or culture of its own shall have the right to conserve the same. Right of minorities to establish and administer educational institutions. 30. (1) All minorities, whether based on religion or language, shall have the right to establish and administer educational institutions of their choice. I recommend readers of this article to watch/read the below and make up their mind on their own about whether they wish to live in servitude – living off crumbs thrown at them by “saviours”, like the author proposes or whether they wish to live a life of dignity as a human being(irrespective of their “denominations “ and affiliations) and as sovereign citizens of this country not needing any favours from anybody. THEY WANT YOU TO BE POOR – a 6mins interview with Robert Kiyosaki a 6mins interview with Dr. Bruce Lipton Explains HOW WE ARE PROGRAMMED AT BIRTH abt. 29 mins interview with Walter Williams(author of “Up from the projects”), Economist, Professor, Thinker and Researcher. abt. 6 mins – Milton Friedman, Economist, Professor, Thinker and Researcher – discusses …….. the many ways government continues to tyrannize minorities. abt. 1 hr 30mins – Walter Williams – The Legitimate Role of Government in Free Society Read “Breaking free of Nehru – lets unleash India” and “Economics for children” by Sanjeev Sabhlok downloadable free from his blog. Now, it’s up to the individual(irrespective of religion and beliefs) to choose between preposterous nonsense or scientifically researched proof.

Dear Mr. Peter, Indeed a detailed note, thank you. Yes I do agree with you. I have experienced it myself. Ever since my child turned eligible to cast the vote I made it a point to get the Election card done. My first attempt was on 15th Jan 2019, uploaded the document and waited for a month did not see any movement of the file. on 21st Feb i called the toll free number and got to know that i had not mentioned my constituency therefore it was pending. On21st Feb I re-registered on the NVSP portal, was glad to see that the file started moving stage by stage within a fortnight the file had reached the last stage of verification, was expecting the card anytime parallelly wanted to check the status online, to my surprise i see the application status back to stage 1. Tried reaching the toll free number but of no use and all my call went unanswered had almost given up. But this morning after reading this article I reached out to 1950 was glad that my call was answered, the executive told me that due to technical issue the actual status is not reflecting online but the card it under process and would reach me during the 1st week of April 2019. No choice but to wait and hope my child get the chance to exercise her rights during this election.

In few minutes while I was still there Same Person started talking to Someone on Phone Line in English. There I judged His ignorance. I have informed to MCC Official regarding this Trash Problem and He told me that He will take care of it. I have requested Mr Bharath Raj from Vijaya Vahini Paper to Publish this Beauty of Mini Vidhana Soudha,so that Citizens of Karnataka will get Amazed. Another highly Surprising matter is BJP Headman Mr. Monappa Bhandary has His Law Office inside the Premises along with many other Law Offices. In other matters He raises voice but He is quiet in Garbage Matter in front of His Office. There is a Rain Gutter in front of His Office with full of Garbage, including plastic. Another issue I wanted to bring to notice is Health Condition inside the Building. This Mini Soudha does not have Good Ventilation to Breath. Everyday Hundreds of Healthy and Unhealthy People gather there and breathing each others’ breath. Little Children are suffocating due to Low Ventilation. Smart City or ….City, public should decide.

  • From Joe D'Souza on Green Life Abused! Why Plant Them, If You Can't Water Them?

Dear Mr. Alfie, this is another loop hole to rob Public Money. I was requested by a Control Room Policeman to look at the Plants between AB Circle till Pandeswar on the Divider. I did call Forest Dept.and got the answer: Contact MCC Office. I called MCC Office and the result was like Dog trying to Catch the Tail by going round and round. I kindly request You to Contact A good Social Worker to find out the Total Amount of Money Paid to Tanker Owners through RTI(Right To Information). This will expose the corruption between Tanker Operator and MCC Office. First Joke: Every Year Forrest Dept. is planting Plants between Baithurli(Kudupu) through Neermarga to Volachil on the roadside. At least past SIX Years I have been watching the Drama of the Forrest Dept. When I called about watering the Plants to Authority in this matter, very next day a tanker will show up. If not it will not show up. Half of the plant are already died. Second Joke: They Plant the Saplings close to Rain Gutters by the Contractor. Just before Rain Season,PWD Authorities give a JCB Contractor to dig the Gutters and prepare for Rain water flow. This JCB Operator will Drive Up the Machine on top of the Saplings and destroy them. This will make way for Sapling Planting Contractor to replant the Saplings following year. This whole operation is between Forest Dept. and Contractor as “You Scratch My Back and I will Scratch Yours”. In the past six years not a single Plant is grown to six feet height. I request the Good Social worker to do an investigation in this Matter. I kindly Request IT Dept. to investigate the Officials and Contractors of their Yearly Income above the Table and Under the Table. Also I request ACB to investigate this Corruption in the name of Envirornment.

Here are a few safety tips: What is really required for the people from the time one gets out from their home is to always remember: ONLY YOU CAN SAVE YOURSELF! 1, Do not wear gold jewelry – instead, wear dress jewelry – In India, people have the tendency to wear gold rings on any or all fingers and a couple of gold chains. and think it reflects how rich they are! Men are no exception too! 2, Do not carry all your Credit or Debit Cards or all your cash with you- instead, some draw cash for a week’s expense and just carry at the most 5 x Rs.100.- notes in your wallet or your handbag for your daily commute or for daily petty expenses. 3. Always walk facing the oncoming traffic and on the right side of the pavement and not on the kerb – and keep your bag slung across on your should with the handbag to your left side with traffic moving to the right. 4. Do not travel in those packed buses that are not regulated by the Transport Dept. for maximum passenger capacity- it only encourages thieves and sexual perverts. 5, Do not stay out after 7 pm to avoid drunkards, drug addicts, and criminals who hang out at these hours and later. 6. Cell phones or Smart Phones are very pricey and sell like hotcakes! Technology can unlock or hack any password protection when stolen. Do not carry your cell phone in your hand to show off the brand or the model, as most people of today’s age do. It’s not safe in the eyes of thieves. 7. If the law cannot control, contain, and stop the menace of crime – no one can!

  • From Siva on Union Minister terms Rahul Gandhi 'hybrid', asks 'how does son of Muslim become a Brahmin'

I think the way in which Mr Hegde conveys something makes people take it lightly. But What he is telling is heavy stuff and true. And I do not see why it is controversial. It is a known and sworn fact that Indira married Feroze, a non-brahmin. His son Rajiv, is a non-brahmin/non-Hindu by religion (culturally a Hindu, no doubt). Sonia is Christian. How can Rahul claim to be a Brahmin? How can he have any Gothra? None of this is made up. How can this be controversial? what is questionable in the fact cited here? Controversial is the claim by Rahul that he is Janeudhari (who does not know how to wear it). Even if he wants to claim that he is Hindu by faith, why claim to be a brahmin – Is he not furthering brahminical parochialism? Why the journalists are not saying anything about it but calling the truth as controversial? If anyone wants to criticize what I said, welcome but please do explain what I said is noot a fact and why?

  • From Richard Thomas on Union Minister terms Rahul Gandhi 'hybrid', asks 'how does son of Muslim become a Brahmin'

DNA is a technical test that cannot identify if one is Hindu, Christian, or Muslim. Indian Politicians, in general, have nothing better to do than badmouthing one’s identity and character. It would have been better if they could reflect what their religion has taught them. Indians are first Indian and not BJP or Congress. God is not Hindu, Christian, or Muslim – religion is a principle for practising mankind, and irrespective of which religion one follows, all religions only teach to love, care, and respect everything and everyone that God has created on this earth. We must all learn to live in love, peace, and harmony. Bad mouthing only results in hate. This media should never carry such messages as news, as there is enough hate in India already.

    • From Siva on Union Minister terms Rahul Gandhi 'hybrid', asks 'how does son of Muslim become a Brahmin'

The question was not about what religion Rahul is. But the question is about the claim that he is a Brahmin. He is Janeudhari. His Gothra is such and such. With that, he is referring to lineage and not faith, the Lineage he is claiming is a lie. If Rahul had said he is a Hindu, Christian or Muslim by faith, no one can and should question it and everyone has to respect it but here the question is faking his identity.

    (1) WHO – Fact sheet No 258: Occupational and Community Noise , February 2001: Quote Prolonged or excessive exposure to noise, whether in the community or at work, can cause permanent medical conditions, such as hypertension and ischaemic heart disease. Unquote (2) WHO – Burden of disease from environmental noise – 2011: Chapt 2. ENVIRONMENTAL NOISE AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE Wolfgang Babisch Rokho Kim Quote Epidemiological studies suggest a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, including high blood pressure and myocardial infarction, in people chronically exposed to high levels of road or air traffic noise. Unquote At least 3 Yakshagana artistes have died within the last 4-5 years. This is the 2nd death of a Yakshagana artiste on stage during a performance within the last 4 -5 years. In my humble opinion, as a lay person, these deaths may have occurred due to a combination of: heavily clad costumes not allowing any ventilation through the clothing; heavy painting of the facial skin not allowing sweating of the skin; exposure to very high decibel levels of the loudspeakers for almost 6 -9 hrs continuously during each performance; exposure to regular (at least 4 to 5 per hour)bursting of very high decibel fire-cracker bombs also for almost 6 – 9 hrs continuously during each performance; atmospheric heat (particularly between mid -Feb upto the onset of the monsoons in June) & high humidity levels; additional heat from high intensity stage lighting; fatigue from the increased numbers of performances (as compared to earlier periods of normality) ; fatigue from physical exertion during the performance; possible existent illnesses; lack of sleep. Therefore, I feel these performances must be conducted only inside an AC’ed hall with controlled temp and decibel levels. In the “modern” loudspeaker(LS) era, Yakshaganas can be heard upto 2 kms away – both the LS’s and the firecracker bombs. These bombs are so loud they can startle anybody and give someone a heart attack even at a distance of 40 ft away. Mr Alfie, Look at the Garbage thrown on Roadside near Kelarai-Neermarga Junction which is Mayors’ Ward. Best Solid Waste Management going on that Spot. Solid waste is Re-cycled by Cattle in dozens. 1. Cows eat the Solid Waste thrown there along with Waste Food including a little bit of Plastic Too. (4 times I have removed Plastic from Poor Cows Mouth, struggling as Plastic stuck in between the teeth along with my worker’s help) 2 Recycling Result: After the process Cow gives Milk to Children to drink. Gives Cow Dung as fertilizer to Vegetable Plants. Look at the garbage behind MCC Commercial Complex, Look at the garbage inside Mini Vidhana Soudha where many Attorneys have their offices including BJP Head Lawyer. Another matter You should Publish as open Garbage Trucks Overload the Garbage and do not Cover. They spill part of it on the middle of the road while 2 wheeler follows them. Secondly, these Riders INHALE the foul smell and digest inside their Lungs. IS IT HEALTHY MATTER? Few times I have informed MCC Officials but it is like “Dog Chasing The Tail” Traffic Police are afraid to take action as it is MCC Matter and Corporators get involved. My request: Media should Question Health Officials and Environmental Officials regarding this and publish the results.

Which party is chosen and elected is not the issue, the concern of every unbiased Indian citizen is to have sane and well-balanced personalities in each sector of governance and people’s acceptance and support. Right now, for the past 4 years, all Indians, as well as foreigners around the Globe, hear of Indian politicians and the two parties squabbling on a daily basis, justifying who did what and who did not during their governance. One has to live in peace and harmony in the present. Squabbling and blame-gaming only amplifies hate and division, which does good only to those want India as a nation to be a third-world country of the sub-continent! Most Indian citizens are fed up with all the bad mouthing and blame-game of all those appointed to run the country and of all the high scale Banking scams and Defence scams. Demonetization to end Terrorism, the introduction of GST to end multiple taxations and to introduce higher taxes on chocolates to cement and everything in-between to 28%, Introduction of another card called AADHAR mandatory for transfer bottled gas subsidy to a consumer’s bank account and thereafter to a call to GIVE UP SUBSIDY and thereafter to link AADHAR to avail everything except to vote! What every Indian need is good basic infrastructure and amenities, affordable living, affordable housing, good and affordable health care and Education to international standards, good and transparent regulations, availability of jobs, and sensible taxation – even in the USA, the GST is only 9 to 10% depending on the state including Chocolates and Cement and everything in-between.

  • From Joe D'Souza on THAT'S NOT SMART? Kadri Kambla Road- a Road with Footpaths & NO Footpaths?

Mr Alfie, there is a saying goes: Donkey Praises its own Tail. Area Corporator is busy on Traffic Circles to promote ……… . He knows that “If you feed the Cow, You get the Milk”. So He is feeding …….. to get the cream. This Corporator has created more problems then good to the public of the area. For Example, City Police East Traffic requested Me to install Barricades near Karnataka Bank to avoid accidents. At their request, at My Cost, I Installed 6 Poles to stop vehicles driving through Small Lane where little Children and Senior Citizen walk. Instead of appreciating, he questioned Me in front of the Public inside the MCC Building, Saying” Ninna Ammerena Jagena alpa Kamba Padere”. He went on abusing Me until I was ready to smack Him on His Face. Everywhere You drive, there is a chance of falling into the roadside gutter on Kambla Road. Look at the Car Wash Water flowing into the rain gutter in two places. There are Water wells close to this Gutter. Naturally, this Car Wash Water is sucked into Tankers through Pumps and Public are provided with this water. I have spoken to the Health Official and Environmental Official of the City. But it is like Spitting in the Air which falls on our face. There is also daylight robbery of Street Lights… . I told about it to Engineer Devraj, Commissioner Nasir including Mayor. It is like pouring water on Bulls’ Back. Just drive on Kambla Road and Pinto Lane and look at the Street Lights being misused with Tax payers money. You along with Mangalorean.com doing a great job for the Community pointing out problems and corruption. Please, I ask the Public to take serious action regarding this Street Light Robbery. Look on Arya Samaj Road too where a House Gate is lighted by Public Light.

Dear SP Nisha Madam,my kind request to you that Sand is coming from Adyar-Kannur area through Mangalore-Nanthoor- KPT Junction through Surathkal- through Udupi towards Koondapur. These Sand Lorries are travelling after 7 pm at the gap of 30 minutes each average. I have once contacted Dy.SP of Udupi regarding this and I hope He has taken action. Including this a Lorry driver threw empty Liquor Bottle to the road side in front of my Car. I stopped my vehicle and checked and name on bottles read Mysore Lancer. So that means He was drinking and driving too. Sad to notice that these trucks travel after Traffic Police leave the Nanthoor – KPT Junctions. There are few Kadri East Traffic Police are very strict but they cannot stop these Lorries in absence of ASI officers are present. This should be changed and given right to stop and check and take action. Or Drivers should be removed and sent to station for clarification and charged by inspectors. I am watching this misery everyday of my life, so also listening to the sad, difficult stories of Traffic Police East why they are handicapped to arrest. Every politician has to be insincere from time time time in order to survive in politics. But this Yeddy is not only insincere, he is also an outright and incompetent fool. Time and again he proves that he is just not fit to lead a state party. He is an embarrassment to every citizen of our state. For that matter I consider Siddaramaiah and appa-maga or even DKS for that matter to be much cleverer in our political system. At least they do know when to keep their mouths shut. Up until the recent botched horse-trading, Yeddy’s stupidity was confined to the state and national-level politics but with this air-strike comment he has truly elevated himself to the international level. Buffoonery, nothing else. Perhaps the next time Modi retaliates terror-group aggressions in the Kashmir region, perhaps he should select one F-16 in Kamikaze mode, with Yeddy tied to the front, targeted to one of those terrorist base camps, effectively nailing two birds in one connie. The sad part is once Yeddy leaves the scene that will make room for another clown with his Rayanna Brigade. As I said earlier, BJP in Karnataka will be in shambolic disarray until these old f*rts disappear from public life.

This problem of any and every type of vehicle from a non-refrigerated truck to a moped transporting/selling fish should be brought to the attention of the local Fisheries Dept, (not that they are not aware of it) so that they can come up with some tough regulations in storing Fish on the docks, transporting Fish for local or export, and retailing Fish door to door. These regulations must then be legalized into a law, and the law must be first implemented at the docks (the source), where fish is brought in. The Fisheries Dept. should then be held responsible for ice water dripping from fish loaded trucks, tempos, and two wheelers. The high income generated from the wholesale and retail of fish should compel such traders to adhere to proper and hygienic handling and storage of fresh fish and in ensuring clean environment and the foul smelling fish water, that is truly a nuisance in Udupi and in Mangalore. Why bring in the Police? The mentality and mind set of the locals must first change to bring about a change.

With due respect to, The Catholic Sabha members and the Bishop in their speeches emphasize that local men should not go abroad for lucrative jobs, and instead be in business locally and look after their parents, but certainly they know how much it costs to rent or own a small shop in Udupi or Mangalore and that the Mother of Sorrows Church owned Udupi Super Bazaar shops that generate a very good monthly, are rented out cheaply to 95% non-Christians. Moreover, what about the large donations given to the Church by these Gulf-based Catholics of Udupi and Mangalore! Nothing is mentioned by the Bishop on this subject. Perhaps, the Builder and Promoter, Mr. Jerry Dias, would be able to inform that to rent a shop in Udupi costs nothing less than Rs.10,000.- to Rs.20,000.- per month and to own a shop costs nothing less than 35Lakhs to 50 Lakhs minimum in Udupi or Mangalore. If a local Catholic who has this kind of money, then he need not open a business or work in the Gulf to look after his own family or his parents. He could instead live on a good interest income of 8% per annum generated by keeping his money in Fixed Deposits. Banks charge between 8.5 – 9.5% interest on loans and this is simply a trap that one will never be able to get out off with any business. Ask any businessman in Udupi or Mangalore and they can tell the Bishop how many hours and how much effort one has to put to run a business in Udupi or Mangalore. and just how much they earn end of the day and just how they profit after deducting all the utility bills, and staff salaries, and unbelievable taxes The Churches earn 100% profit without any cash investment from the weekly Tithes, yearly KAIDO, and large donations coming from gulf based Catholics. People do not have enough spending money in Udupi and Mangalore taking into consideration their monthly income, and the salaries in Udupi and Mangalore for 95% of jobs in shops and supermarkets do not pay much. Only 10% working in Banks, Udupi Municipality or other Government offices and the Insurance companies earn well. Udupi, in general, has a very poor economy and market because of the small population and lack of industries and job opportunities. The Bejapuris labourers are instead doing very well, earning a daily wage of Rs.450 to Rs.700.- per day cash upfront, with little overheads and expenses and no taxes paid!

  • From siva on Marriage of the Decade: Top Leaders Attend DYCP Mithun Rai's Wedding in City

Wish the couple all th very best in their life. I don’t see any opposition leaders in the photos. Not sure if they were not called ‘properly’ or they chose to ignore. If either of these was true, it is sad. Of course whom to be invited for the wedding is prerogative of the marrying couple. But we mangaloreans always used to raise above politics in any personal functions, any emergency situations or any thing related to religion or cultural things. Sad that such practices are done away with.

It is appaling that the construction contractors are still following the prctice of not clearing the debris. Instad of cleaning what cntractors left, influential and experienced among the RKM volunteers can find out who the contractor was. Name them, Shame them and ask them to clear the debris. If they still don’t clear their mess, the MCC should clean it and collect the clearance charges from them. If they fail to give fine, those contractos should be banned from any contract with MCC. This should be a strict policy. Without such harsh measures, Mangaluru will not remain clean no matter how much RKM does One more thing: If public throw the garbage, they also should be cught and puniched well. Having said that I feel ashamed because Managlore is always considered as intellectual and inteeligent people. But looking at the mess we create, I seriously doubt it.

The Govt which doesnot care for its people for the full term, what can they do at the fag end. same goes for any party. we are normal citizens of INDIA and have never even voted for any party. This is in response to the comment posted by Francis Lobo who states that the author had missed to highlight that the laborers are not wearing any protective gear, like gloves, shoes etc. To clarify on this statement – Antony waste Handling cell does provide shoes, gloves etc, but it is the laborers who are reluctant to wear them- since they complain that wearing shoes get their feet warm and sweaty, gloves are hassles to remove now and then etc etc So whose fault is it? Laborers need to adhere to the safety rules but they are totally violating it.

  • From francis lobo on Loading Garbage Trucks on City Roads is Unhygienic, Stinky & Creates an Eyesore!

The author sees only the unhygienic way of loading of garbage bins. But misses seeing that the laborers who are working there are not wearing any safety equipment. They do not have shoes, Gloves. proper headgear, face masks or inhalers and they stay in the accommodation provided by the waste handlers which does not have hygienic facilities. Apart from this the people also do not know how to dumps garbage. Some people just throw the garbage on the roadside without proper packing or dump into bins. The laborers have to physically lift this material which may be 3- 4 days old and put inside the trucks. Let us first make sensitive the people who are working there and people who are throwing the garbage to do it properly with tools and tackles and also proper packing. The spillage on the road is an issue which can be cleaned. But then if the person gets infected or gets a disease it takes a longer time to cure and also expensive

  • From Richard Thomas on Loading Garbage Trucks on City Roads is Unhygienic, Stinky & Creates an Eyesore!

Most of the Public Services and Utilities in India are not regulated and the public are not informed or educated on civic subjects, nor are the favoured Contractors specific educated or experienced or equipped. Garbage and Sewerage disposal is a serious civic concern of any country. Modern technology and modern living has quadrupled the garbage- wet or dry – due to prepared and packaged food and food packaging disposables. However, disposal management still lacks technology and infrastructure in India. Just purchasing a few garbage trucks and employing a few labourers does not call for a complete safe and hygienic garbage collection and disposal system. The State Government of Karnataka must look after it’s own state and it’s population and it’s infrastructure and amenities to a very high standard instead of bickering of who will govern and control and loot the public and the state, and which political party is better than the other. Examples and Education are of primary importance. Whilst the Indian government is spending millions of billions of Rupees taken from Indians in all forms of taxes to purchase the latest and costly hi-tech arms and armaments, that is not put to use in any form – peace or war, so should the people in authority in Karnataka State = source that technology and that equipment from those countries to manage better Garbage Collection and Disposal. The Municipality is quick levying a charge for Garbage disposal and collection but are not providing thickness approved plastic bags for garbage disposal to every household, and most household simply empty their wt garbage in a small plastic bin, that in turn is emptied in a big bin in a building and that in turn in dumped in a small open truck by the Garbage Contractor employees. This leads to stray cats, dogs, and rodents to these garbage bins and the foul smell and the disease it can spread. ALL PEOPLE AND ONLY PEOPLE MUST BE THE CHANGE AND AS WELL EDUCATE EACH OTHER, AND THE MUNICIPALITY EMPLOYEES MUST STAY FOCUSSED ON THIS SUBJECT AND SUPERVISE PROPER MANAGEMENT

What a magnificent place of collection of antiques and artifacts that have been carefully collected and displayed for the benefit of the public. Excellent location that will attract hundreds of visitors every day in addition to the visit to the nearby College Chapel, another place of unique paintings that have a proud display of history. All the students of St. Aloysius will be thrilled with two master pieces of Art and History that will enable the students to bring more visitors to their Campus and make the place more prominent than ever before. We shall certainly be there without fail on our next visit, and see how we can add some more items of antiquity as a small token of our contribution.

The Jesuits know the art of “Perfection”, and it begins from the spectrum of Education, Music, Sports and most importantly the selfless nature in performing what is good and beneficial for everybody. Mangalore therefore has been enriched with so many talents that has benefited the Society as a whole to a great extent. The College Chapel with some of the finest paintings from Bro Moscheni have remained safe and fresh for so long, because the place has been well maintained and preserved with utmost care. We took a tour of the Camp this year, and we were highly impressed with all the new developments that relate to not only Education but also various other short term and long term plans. The newly created Museum is certainly an added attraction. We were impressed with the wide variety of collections and antiques, and now from the recent photographs we even witness lot more happenings than what we had witnessed just a few months ago. The place needs further help and support, and we hope to spend much more of our vacation time at the College Museum next time. Thank you, Fr. Dion Vaz, Fr Leo and even Kavita, and many others, for all your new initiatives that will bring greater glory and fame for Mangalore.

Senator Kamala Harris has an impressive record as a prosecutor, a district attorney and Attorney General in California. Her heritage should not be doubted. Her mother hailed from Tamil Nadu in South India and her father was Jamaican. To question these undeniable facts amounts to mischief mongering with intent to denigrate. More importantly, Senator Harris is an intelligent, personable, articulate, vibrant and electable candidate. Her first town hall performance in Iowa, chaired by Jake Tapper of CNN was very well received by the audience and by those who watched her on TV. She has many challenges ahead, one of which should NOT be the fact that she classifies herself as black in a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-religious country of over 300 million “immigrants” – the U.S.A.

400 years of Carmelite dedication in India was filled with prayers, sacrifices, charities as well as virtues that have brought new awakenings as to how and what Missionaries can offer to India, a nation of religious history that has created Busshism, Jainism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity as well as Judaism. Carmelites have shown to this Nation how we can respect each faith and live side by side with dignity and respect for each other. The arrival of St. Thomas in India as an “uncrowned Ambassador” from Jesus Christ, followed by the arrival of St. Francis Xavier after 1500 years paved the way for variety of Missionary priests and nuns to the Indian sub-continent brought a new awareness in India as to how these foreign groups of Missionaries can create charitable Organizations by establishing schools, colleges, Universities, Hospitals, Orphanages and many other Institutes without indulging into any religious conversions. Carmelites showed to the Indian authorities during the Colonial era and even after the era of Independence that we all can live with peace and harmony and have our own freedom of choice towards our own individual faith.

New Shopping Arcades, new Cinemas, new Restaurants, new Parking Lots are all important features that need be included in the “Smart City” concept for Mangalore, but there are many more “essentials” that have to be introduced for Mangalore in order to enable the City to enjoy all the “Smart City” priorities. We need the City to be zoned properly where the Hospitals, Schools, Colleges, Libraries, Performing Art Centers, and also the Parks and Recreations to be given equal prominence. Roadside vendors also need prominence and importance, but these roadside displays of all handicrafts and ‘cottage industry’ products need be expose only few week ends so that people can walk across the display stands on family outings. The City needs equal importance on cleanliness, frequent garbage collections and constant monitoring on general hygiene so that people are fully aware of the City laws. City has to focus on High Technology sectors that could bring more know-how with new Educational awareness and new plans to cope with future challenges. The City has to encourage inviting foreign dignitaries, including all the local expertise to be encouraged to visit the city periodically with series of lectures and public audiences with new ideas to appear and all possibilities for future establishment. The “Smart City” concept is a group effort of all private and public involvements with independent groups to monitor periodically the progress achieved thru various new old and new developments. The “Smart City” is a “big picture” concept that should be viewed with a patriotic attitude because it will transform the ever-growing Town into a modern city with prospects to change and benefit all facets of Social life, Economic life, Educational life where Society will continue to grow and prosper in line with other “Smart Cities” of India.

  • From Siva on St Aloysius College Pays Homage to Sri George Fernandes

Mangaluru should be proud of its son who contributed to the nation in multiple ways. Being born in Managluru but becoming a popular and strong trade union leader in Bombay of yesteryears –where outsiders, particularly the south Indians were not liked, — is a great achievement. And from there, going to Muzzapur, Bihar and creating a strong supporter base, getting rejected from a far off place which was neither a birthplace nor a place where he developed trade union leadership is not something ordinary mortals can achieve, it requires special capabilities, very special ones! To contest an election sitting in jail with the highest margin in the country, the record of which was not broken speaks of the man that George Fernandes. As a defence minister, he went to Siachen a record 18 times to be with the Soldiers and show them we are with them. He was a true son of Baharthmata. His association with the BJP leaders is very difficult to comprehend. In fact, if my memory serves me right and reasoning is right, he may be one of the reasons for the existence of BJP. After Janasangh was dissolved while forming the Janata party, its erstwhile leaders continued association with RSS. If I remember right, George Fernandes was one of those who objected the Janata leaders continuing to maintain their association with RSS which he called ‘Dual Membership’. The leaders who did not want to disassociate with RSS, formed their own party, BJP. The fact that George Fernandes not only continued the friendship with those leaders, but stitched the alliance of his party (Samata party) with BJP to form the NDA and ultimately becoming its convener, yet retaining all his socialist ideas and ideology. If that is not political ingenuity of highest order, what is! And even though he was away from his birthplace he played a very significant role in moving forward the Konkan Railway project which languished for more than a century after conception. I doubt this project would ever have seen light if not for him. Of course, in my opinion, the coastal region is not using this Railway line to its potential and nor did we give respect to Geoge Fernandes to the extent that we should have given. That is what I want to point out. I think it is time that we Mangalureans give him proper recognition – a landmark, a beautiful and useful memorial, airport name, prominent street name, or any other suitable idea. For this, all people should come together irrespective of party, religion, language or any other affiliation as here is a son of Mangalore who became an institution by himself. We are, we should be proud and show that we are proud of him. oh, by the way, this is not for him as that great soul is Resting In Peace. This is for us and our future generations of Mangaluru.

  • From Prof. Dr. G. N. Menon on Trump doubts lawmakers will reach border wall deal

There is a fundamental flaw in Donald Trump’s idea that only a “very strong form of physical barrier” will stop criminals, drugs, gangs and human trafficking. All the information hitherto available to the intelligence agencies and those responsible for homeland security in the U.S.A. clearly shows that the main ports of entry are NOT at the southern border. However, the 45th POTUS has an obsessive, compulsive desire to build a wall in spite of all the facts to the contrary. And, he will use every possible way to do so. It is clear he does not want to be confused by the facts to build his “great, big, beautiful” wall.

Best Wishes are extended to the Organizers of Pinnacle 2019 that will be held shortly in Kuwait. It takes a lot of hands and lot of efforts to make any performance possible on the stage, especially in the Persian Gulf region because each one is actively involved with their respective professions in their daily pursuit of life. It is noteworthy that the ultimate goal of a performance such as this is intended for an Orphanage in India. Every Kuwaiti Dinar earned from an effort such as this is therefore well spent for a good cause, and all the people striving for a good cause will be abundantly blessed. Keep up the good work.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on FMMC holds Dr Venkat Rao Memorial PG Quiz 2019

Late Dr. Venkat Rao was one of the original pioneers of Fr Muller’s Charitable Institution. He was a successor to Dr. Lorsab and Dr Mathews and changed the entire outlook of Fr. Muller’s with new technologies and new ideas. He was wholeheartedly supported by late Fr. Reginald Pinto and late Fr. Marian Fernandes. Dr. Venkat Rao brought a new name and fame for Fr. Mullers Hospital by attracting thousands of new patients who came to Fr. Mullers because of Dr. Venkat Rao. We as a family had close association with Dr. Venkat Rao who was virtually our neighbor. He came to Fr. Mullers when he was a bachelor, and when he got married he brought additional fame to our neighborhood. Dr. Venkat Rao was a kind-hearted person, and he rendered free medical services to hundreds of patients that visited Fr Mullers Hospital as well as his home when they could not afford medical services. We distinctly remember that when Mother Theresa first visited Fr. Mullers Leprosy Asylum several decades ago, Dr. Venkat Rao was there to first meet Saint Mother Theresa and greet her. We are so pleased that in the name of late Dr. Venkat Rao many worthy ideas being generated. This is an excellent idea, and late Dr. Venkat Rao deserves all the worldly recognitions.

  • From Prof. Dr. G. N. Menon on What a Shame? US Government Shutdown Reaching 31 Days Creates a History

This shut down of the federal government is the longest in U.S. history. President Donald Trump owns this shut down. In his own words at a meeting in the Oval Office with Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, the President said that he is proud to own this shut down. Instead of building a wall that was supposed to be paid for by the Mexican government, a non-starter from day 1, 800,000 Americans are unpaid for 32 days for a wall that’s not going to be built and that the majority of Americans do not want. The President’s intransigence is having grave consequences for the unpaid Americans and their families, and will have a deleterious effect on the U.S. economy.

The murder of the Washington Post columnist and Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey was a heinous crime that merits a thorough international, independent, transparent investigation. The Saudi government’s lies, changing stories and crude attempts to cover up this murder should not be unpunished. Justice must be done and perceived to be done. The current investigation in Saudi Arabia is a sham to cover up the name of the principal perpetrator of the crime, i.e. the person at the highest level of the Saudi government who ordered the killing.

Tantri Kantaravru Rajeeveru’s purification ritual after two women visited the Sabarimala shrine, in defiance of the Supreme Court’s directive that allowed all women entry into the shrine, reflects insubordination and disrespect for the rule of law. Frankly, the restrictions on the entry of women are absurd, particularly so at the end of the second decade of the 21st century. It is high time these outdated rituals are discarded. The Almighty does not discriminate. Why should his self appointed representatives on earth be allowed to do so?

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Cleanliness & good health are inter-related - Dr Shivashankar Murthy

Cleanliness is next to Godliness is a clear saying that is fully applicable to a country such as India where the population is thriving all over our Cities, towns and villages. The daily garbage that is thrown all over the place without any concern is unbelievable. How much can a Municipality or a Punchayath render to the people while the budgets are limited and the relevant taxes collected are negligible. While people are conscious of the need for cleaner environments and cleaner sanitary procedures, the Government resources are indeed limited while the overall daily needs are enormous. Compared to many Cities of India, the City of Mangalore deserves the timely praise because we are striving the utmost to keep our City clean and organized. Our trash is collected regularly and the place is kept clean and neat. We even noticed that the domestic garbage is even collected regularly with enough warning, and the neighborhood is awakened by the crew in uniform coming to collect domestic garbage. Cleanliness throughout the city is improving every day, and our City fathers are more vigilant than many other cities of India. We are great believers that the “Smart City” concept does not merely relate to high technology and various costly and time consuming devices, but the daily cleanliness and upkeep of every corner of the city is of paramount importance. India has abundance of rich people who need to come forward voluntarily and help the City to maintain orderliness and clean environment. Let all our teachers and students in every Educational Institute come forward and teach the rest of the world the importance of clean environment. Let the pubic learn the substance of the benefit of cleaner city that will bring healthy atmosphere of reminder to each and everyone that cleanliness helps to bring healthier outlook to the entire city as a whole. This is the best time Mangalore should wake up and become a role model to the rest of India.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Best place for expats: 73% of foreigners in UAE earn more than in their home country

Expats throughout the Persian Gulf region have always played an important role in so many daily functions of their respective professions. Whether they are Doctors or Engineers, or whether they are Accountants or Secretaries, all of them or most of them come to the Gulf region with a distinct purpose and give their very best of dedication to the profession they belong to. A large portion of the expatriates leave their families behind to take care of their daily needs which also include their children education. Living in foreign countries throughout the contractual term is tough. Many expat professions also include many domestic jobs such as cooks, butlers, as well as many skills such as Nurses, Carpenters, Waiters and even gardeners and drivers who render a loyal service for the entire duration of their contract. Everything in this world of profession is a “give and take” service that serves a mutually beneficial service. It’s a service that is mutual and filled with loyalty and dignity. India is no doubt one of the best country that has proven to be one of the best nation that has been known as the trustworthy country for development of reliable human capital that will always continue to provide the best of human labor to one and all that deserve such service. May God bless them all.

Walking! This ancient and time tested form of activity, is what keeps our body functioning well, with all the 7 vital parts such as the brain, the eyes, lungs, heart, stomach, the kidneys, and our limbs in good shape, along with a good look at God’s creation, the amazing sunrise and the life that it springs into all that dwells in the sky, on the earth, below the earth, and in the sea, or the awesome sunset! Those who do not find a early morning walk convenient, should for an evening walk on the beach or in the park. Always carry drinking water in a half litre shoulder strap pvc/aluminium bottle that are commercially available, and stay hydrated, as Mangalore or South India is hot and humid. Walking at a good steady pace for an approx. up and down distance of 5 to a max of 7km is the most ideal workout one would require to keep the body healthy and strong. It’s free from timings, free from special footwear, free from special clothing, and most of all it’s FREE OF COST!

I see that week after week, so much work is done. yet so much remains which means 2 things. 1. A lot of people are still irresponsible. It pains that educate cultured people of Mangaluru have still not embrace cleanliness. 2. Mangaluru corporation is not doing its duty incerely. Good that commisioner is now involved and is talking about cooperation. Here are a few humble suggestions (Nothing new and some of these may be already in place and may be I don’t know) 1. Every week, there should be one team exclusively doing survey along with Mangaluru corporation officials (only those who are enthusiastic) and identify all areas of Mangaluru that needs to be cleaned. If corporators also can take part without party banners and work with citizens, this survey becomes easy. 2. Have a dedicated website for this and let people give suggestions; post photos. IT companies in and around Mangaluru can take up this task of creating and maintaing a dedicated website as part of their CSR. 3. A committee of officials, volunteers, Swamis of RK Ashram can decide which one to be taken by Sunday Swatchata Drive, what should Corporation do (For example, installing and cleaning trash bins in the public places). Mangaluru MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Mangaluru MLAs could contribute and plan to meaningfully contribute to this by developing and implementing plans using their development funds. Mangalore has so many highly intelligent individuals; so many engineering and other colleges with some professors teaching public health; and many more intellectuals. They should come forward (may be on a active basis or by means of suggestions on the website). 4. Finally a suggestion for Mangalorean or anyone else publishes these photos. You are doing a great job. It would be really good if you can please publish ‘before’ and ‘after’ side by side or next to each other and also it would be great to print the location information next to the picture.

  • From Melroy C.F.Fernandes on 2019 LOK SABHA ELECTIONS: Will it be Modi’s way or the Highway?

Voters cannot be said to have learned any lessons and therefore wisened if they keep alternately choosing between the black pot(miscellaneous brands), the black pan(miscellaneous brands) and the fire (there being no other choice;NOTA not being a person). Voters have to take the initiative to educate themselves so that they can choose wisely, instead of just gambling (like purchasing a “lottery” and hoping to win) their lives away by choosing between politicians and their parties which use different names but are essentially same/similar in character and which use “policies” which are carrying India toward disaster for the last 71 years. For solutions to the problems we are facing, I recommend reading “Breaking free of Nehru – Let’s unleash India” by Sanjeev Sabhlok https://bfn.sabhlokcity.com/ (it is generous of him to have made it available for free download so that even those who cannot afford can read it). For sometime, there was a progressive political party called “Loksatta” led by Dr. J.P.Narayan but around 2014 they have jumped off the political band wagon as they cannot compete with the “big-bucks political parties” and because in Dr. JP’s own words, “ Indians are still not ready for change”. Essentially almost all Indians are/have been turned into “freeloaders , cripples dependent on the govt. to think for them and religious zombies” living off State funds & corrupt to the core and they wish for the status quo to continue . If India does not reform (shunning socialism, communism and immediately delinking religion, tradition, culture from governance of the State) then India is soon going to go the way of : Venezuela Cuba “Cuba and the cameraman” – 1hr documentary made over the course of 45 years between 1970’s to 2K by Jon Alpert. • From Melroy C.F.Fernandes on Japanese citizen Kane Suzuki flags off RKM's 3rd Shramadan of Swacchata Abhiyan

It’s nice to see the RK missionaries, led by a missionary Swami clad in his missionary robes, conducting, with missionary zeal, the weekly/ monthly/annual/phased swacchata abhiyan as part of civil society contribution to the Swacch Bharat Mission(which in its earlier avatar, pre-2014, was named “total sanitation campaign” and “nirmal bharat abhiyan”). As is quite apparent, the previous names were totally uncatchy, unmissionary and unmarketable names not drawing people from around the world, film stars, sports-stars, captains and missionary-stars to crowd into the photo-frame. I particularly like the Warli art and other art works on the walls of the city as a result of the “Shram-dan” by the missionaries from the RK ashram or is it math(they sure are good at it). I cringe to see the able- Japanese citizen Kane sweeping the dusty and dirty roads of Mangal-uru; he now has first-hand experience of what one feels when one jumps from the (Ja)pan into the fire(quite literally, considering that the streets of Japan are what “cleanliness” and “hygiene” define). Not being “intelligent” I request some “smart” people to clear my doubts : (1) Doesn’t Shram-dhan mean “voluntary contribution of labour for a public cause”? Doesn’t “dhan” mean to donate and not take from one hand and give back only a little using the other? (2) If above is so , then why is MRPL-ONGC(a company owned by the people of India) paying RK Mission to conduct these heavily photo-op’d and publicised swacchata abhiyans. Under its CSR scheme, MRPL has paid RK Mission: Rs.10 lakh 40 thousand to build bath cum toilet blocks in FY 2013-14; Rs. 14 lakh “financial assistance” for Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan in FY 2015-16; Rs. 20 lakh(with a commitment of upto 50 lakh) for the SB mission jamboree in FY 2016-17; https://mrpl.co.in/sites/default/files/Primister%20Office%20%20CSR%20Activity_0.pdf https://mrpl.co.in/sites/default/files/Swach%20Bharath%20Abhiyaan%20Activities%20of%20MRPL.pdf Well for FY 18-19 we have no publicly available data. So MRPL has paid RK Mission Rs.44.4/- lacs between 2013-14 to 2017 years. (pls note that the RK missionaries are not the only beneficiaries of the MRPL CSR funds. Never mind that MRPL feels no CSR toward the people they have forcefully displaced from their homes and lands and have no “funds” to pay these people their rightful share). (3) Was RK Mission conducting these heavily photo-op’d and publicised swacchata abhiyans prior to 2014? What caused the sudden love for the nation? The Nation wants to know! (4) I cannot help wondering how after so many phased “swacchata abhiyans” the brooms – held by the posing missionary-stars, the captains, the “Japanese in Manga-luru” and the elected reps. in the photo-sessions – look brand-new? How do you do it? Is the weekly work(2 – 4 hrs) so hardly (un)rough that you need to buy new equipment every week? Or, are these props kept separate for use during the photo-ops only. (5) Where is all the dirt and debris dumped after collection? Is it the NIMBY policy that is followed? Is the garbage segregated and disposed as per the waste disposal policy of the govt.? (RK Mission had conducted one such “abhiyan” in my Panchayat area and I heard that the collected garbage, after all the public “show” was over, was simply dumped from one conspicuous place to another “ out of sight is out of mind” place!) (6) Isn’t whatever the RK Mission is doing, actually the job of the MCC? So why are all the Corporators, MLA’s, MP’s and MLC’s who pose for the photo-ops not actually doing their job! Why is the govt. not held accountable for the civic works? (7) We are all charged a Swacch Bharat Cess by the govt. in our bills., where does all that money collected from 1.3 billion people go? (is it used to build statues and headquarters). (8) My Panchayat does not even collect any garbage. I collect the plastics , pay for the transportation and hand it over to the Panchayat and they happily burn it alongwith the other waste in their backyard posing grave health risks to the neighbourhood and the person burning the plastics. Practically everyone else throws their waste(including plastics) into the nearest rain water drainage channel, where it collects until the monsoon season and the rains faithfully wash it into the sea. So much for Swacch Bharat and pollution control! To wind up, MRPL should spend our public money wisely by donating, to the district administration , a large approved-for- the -purpose incinerator to burn the plastics with minimum air-pollution. All plastics should be collected from all over the district by each of the concerned authorities and sent to this centralised location. The concerned civic authorities should get their act together and do their job for which they collect taxes from the citizen. Public money should not be spent in promoting certain organisations, associations and religions who are bent on spoiling the govt.(for their own personal benefit) instead of holding the govt. accountable. MRPL could have spent those 44.4 lacs better by giving “dhan” to the poor municipal sweepers and garbage collectors for the education and betterment of their children and in providing these workers personal protection clothing and gear to safeguard their health while working rather than pouring it down the drain in making some rich people and some rich organisations richer!

  • From Richard Thomas on A Green Ride! MBC & SAC Bicyclists Rode the City Spreading Message on Pollution

All these campaigns are an eyewash when it comes to building better roads, better traffic signs, better traffic management and policing, and keeping those smoking/polluting buses and trucks off the roads. Worst than Pollution is the state of the roads during the rainy season and thereafter – and no matter how many craters exist on the main road, nothing is ever taken up to get them fixed, even on a dry day. So far booking and penalizing has had minimum or no effect at all – and this PUC law is simply a business, that is set up on a low cost- one lady – managed business set up at Petrol Stations all over the country. If PUC was truly implemented in a stringent and effective manner – one would never find those black smoking buses and trucks. Agents at the Traffic Dept. manage their business very well, hand in gloves with all the staff of the Transport Dept or RTO, and this keeps everyone happy in the game named Pollution Under Control!

I support Prof Nayak in his pursuit of scientific inquiry. After all he has staked his entire property if proved wrong, so he would be the loser. The late Mother Teresa had never claimed to be a saint, she was herself treated at hospitals by “non-saints” (men of science) and that too in “phoren” lands. It is people who claim that she is a saint ( that a certain religious organization “capitalized” this claim is no wonder). Her work when she was alive makes her worthy to have been called a “living saint”(irrespective of her motives and beliefs). The recent “miracle” of the THE POTTA nearly getting drowned and the recent “miracles” of Attur Jatre, Karkala, having to go with a begging bowl to politicians to fund them in building more superstructures that too from the poor tax-payers’ money speaks volumes of these “miracle”workers.

  • From Richard Thomas on Kundapur Woman loses Rs 7.75 Lakh in online fraud

Wonder why and how people do not learn that E-Commerce is the most unreliable and the most fraud-infested technology ever invented. So many people get cheated doing online transactions, and sadly the authorities still encourage that everything should be transacted on-line despite so many news articles worldwide of how easily people steal money. I strongly recommend people to conduct any transaction in the old and trusted ways – like go personally to the Bank to withdraw cash with a Slip or a Cheque, or take a Statement from inside the bank – thus avoiding the ATM and the scams in which people have lost a lot of money. ATM’s are Third Party owned and operated. Cameras do not stop crime and loss! Shopping or applying for a Franchisee should also be done in person at an address – and not online. In this manner, you know the person or the company whom you interact with, the office or location that you visit and conduct business with. Banks are also involved in financial scams so much so that these cheats have legitimate accounts in banks – where they ask one to transfer large amounts of money – and so all the absurd ideas of KYC and Aadhar Card implemented by the RBI and the Indian government goes down the drain! The Internet is good for information, studies and news only- even using it for correspondence is not safe – the old way of letter writing is much safe and reliable – and guaranteed no one can snoop.

The business of keeping an area of a city or a town clean has two sides. First the Municipality should install sufficient garbage bins in all public places such Bus Stations, Bus Stops, Train Stations, Rick Stands, Taxi Stands, Movie Halls, Parks, and on all main roads. This being done, People must be educated in the benefit of disposing off garbage properly. Then the Municipality sweep and clean all the main and bye-lanes on a every day basis. Last resort, impose heavy penalty on those found littering – even the poor litter as they do not want to pay the small charge the Municipality levies for collection and removal of garbage on a daily basis.

The sense of cleanliness and hygiene needs to be inculcated in the minds and hearts of children from infancy. But this does not happen in most of the households, because in our culture, we think that cleaning is the servant’s job. As long as we don’t own up cleaning our environs as a personal responsibility, we can’t expect for the situation to change for the better. Only way forward is to include cleanliness in the School curriculum from very early stage of schooling, and doing this in practical ways, so that the kids would learn this as a way of life.

It’s high time now the Udupi District In-Charge Minister will take a round from Manipal to Karavali Junction and the Court Road till Kinni Mulki and take stock of the bad state of all the roads, and give orders to the Municipality and the Public Works Dept. to repair and resurface or concrete these prone bad sectors of all the roads. Good roads and good infrastructure directly reflect on the good management of the authorities appointed. Also, the City Bus Stand in Udupi should be made FREE from all those North Karnataka labourers who have made this place their den for all types of vices, drinking, matka, prostitution, illegal vending, labour bonding, etc. The Superintendent of Police Mr. Laxman should look into this and act. This Bus Stand has become a total mess in recent years. Ladies and girls are not safe at all in this area when some many drunkards are found lingering or laying on the footpaths. • From Richard Thomas on 'Strict Laws to be Enforced for Setting Up Mobile/TV Towers'- Minister U T Khader

The problem in India is, most Ministers are not educated in the portfolio they have been given as Ministers – it’s just a title they are given with a fat salary and unimaginable allowances – they call it Politics. A Minister with Bachelor of Arts education is given a portfolio of Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, and so on. Laws and Regulations must have a separate body made up of trade specific educated and professionals so that they can draft out a regulation code, and a law that will be implemented in the strictest sense, before a certain technology takes root, such as Mobile Phones, SIM cards, and Mobile Phone Towers. SIM cards and installation of Mobile Towers on private home and building towers should have been regulated in its budding stages. Now it is too late to implement a new law – because most of the late laws do not provide for Plan B, such as where will the authority be able to shift and install all the Mobile Towers that are already installed. The Mobile companies are obviously paying money to those homes and building owners where they have installed the Towers – same like Advertisement hoardings – there is no law or regulation, where they should be installed, and private homes and buildings and sites where they are installed, receive money from the advertisement companies or individuals. Why are SIM cards not issued as a virtual number to that individual who has subscribed to it, and why are SIM cards being registered in multiple names upon not being recharged and upon being cancelled from it’s owners name, just to generate money in the name of business. Same goes with Ration Card, Voters Card, Aadhar Card that are asked as a proof of ID, and whereas India lacks a National Identity Card, that should rightly be adopted and issued to every Indian national without any expiration date, as one proof of Identity. As Aadhar Card and Ration Cards have been carried even by nationals of neighbouring countries. The authorities are themselves at loggerheads with the true intention of an Aadhar Card. Let’s be real and practical as Indians!

Drona, your points have been respectfully noted. Thank you. “Feed a man and he will eat for a day, teach him how to fish and he will never have to depend on anyone again”. I never do charity work or social service. Besides,I have no idea why I should engage only with those who celebrate Christmas. Like the other animals and plants, I too am “religion blind” and look at people based solely on their merits. ” Be careful not to practice your righteousness to be seen by them. ……. When you give to the needy do not announce it with trumpets………………. when you give to the needy do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing ………………. ” – Matthew 6:1-4 Finally, I close with the truth and reality which no hypocrite will admit to: “Nobody ever saw a dog make a fair and deliberate exchange of one bone for another with another dog………But man has almost constant occasion for the help of his brethren and it is in vain for him to expect it from their benevolence only……….. Give me that which I want and you shall have this which you want, is the meaning of every such offer and it is in this manner that we obtain from one another the far greater part of those good offices which we stand in need of ” – Adam Smith ( The Wealth of Nations)

Melroy, while you may be agnostic or an atheist, please remember that a vast majority are believers in God or the supreme being. I totally agree that animal cruelty is largely preventable and some thing like fire crackers are unnecessary. I do not claim that I am a vegetarian as such but I prefer vegetarian. I get repulsed at the thought of animal slaughter. May be it is demand and supply chain which keeps the slaughter houses busy. If we stop using meat, slaughter houses will not be needed. You may quote Bose regarding plant life. Obviously human beings are healthier with vegetarian diet. Fish of course is good. You catch it and not slaughter. I know Prof Nayak does not believe in God. That is OK. He does lots of social service and serves the God he does not accept.Paropakaaram punyaaya, paapaaya parapeedanam. Do some charity work this Christmas. You will find so many unfortunate poor people who look forward to Christmas not because they can afford to celebrate it but they accept Jesus and celebrate his birth. That is a happy time for lots of Christians and others. Make some people happy, share a meal with them or buy a simple gift. That is the spirit of Christmas. As far as Diwali goes, we all know what it stands for. May the light of diwali and the candle of Christmas guide all of us to live happy. Live and let live.

  • From Melroy C.F.Fernandes on Death, Fear and Pain To Animals! Why are People Ignorant in Bursting Loud Firecrackers?

Answers: (1) Animals(other than humans) do not have any religion. This is because God(if there is one or a zillion) created REGION ,man added a LI(E) in between and created RE-LI-GION. Therefore, bursting fire-crackers affects animals in the same manner whether it is Diwali, New Year or Christmas or Eid. (2) Animals (other than humans) do not vote in elections so it does not matter to animals whether JR Lobo wins or loses. Therefore, bursting fire crackers by JR Lobo’s victory celebration before or after election results , last year or whenever , also frightens animals and makes them scared(that includes the sacred animals too). (3) Plants have as much life and can feel in their own way but that is not perceptible to animals (like human beings) who can only feel when they are pinched. None other than Dr.J.C. Bose, of pure Indian race, proved this scientifically. Therefore, please be kind to animals and plants this Christmas , Diwali and Eid and everyday and eat nothing. For those who believe in RELIGION the word of God should be enough!

  • From MCF on Why Decibel Levels Need to be Brought Down Everywhere

Dear Sir, Thank you very much for the article. It assumes greater significance in the aftermath of the railway line accident in Punjab which to a large degree was a result of the numbing of the hearing( temporary threshold shift of hearing caused by exposure to very loud noise) and eye-sight(blinded due to bright high intensity light) senses of the persons involved including the train driver , which would have helped in the “flight or fight” response of the human “animal instinct”. Thousands of bombs exploding during the burning of the Raavan worsened by the probable use of huge loudspeakers would have drowned any sound of the train and its horn. High intensity light would have temporarily blinded the persons involved similar to when the opposite vehicle on the road does not dip or reduce the intensity of its headlights thus blinding the driver or person approaching from the opposite direction of the road. Nature has endowed the man animal with 5 senses for his survival.

  • From Denis Lewis, Brahmavar/Toronto, Canada on 'Musicians' Celebrate 'Musician's' Birthday! Evergreen Trumpeter Harry D'souza is 68 Yrs Young

We used to thoroughly enjoy these brass bands while growing up in the 70s when they always played during village weddings. In Brahmavar, we had Gloria Jyothi Band by Salins family and New Star Band by Suares family. As children and teenagers, we used to be mesmerized by the beautiful tunes they played. There were also good bands in Perampally and Malpe which were also occasionally invited to play in our area. I think only a few have managed to survive the orchestra led music scenario in weddings and celebrations these days. Miss those days.

If the erring conductor or driver becomes aware that you are complaining via whatsapp, he is likely to translate whatsapp to chaste Tulu aka ‘daananbe’?
