May their souls Rest In Peace. On a related note, I don’t know if there is enoug evidence that dead bodies are bigger source of virus. When theey are alive, medical professionals have to go near to these patients with protective gear. If that is so, at least the close relatives in limited number should be allowed to attend and conduct the last rights in protective gears.

I have been a regular customer of FIELDSTAR since its opening. Widest variety of products, polite and helpful staff, reasonable rates, pleasant ambience, parking area in front – one could not ask for a better shop than this. I feel extremely sorry for this most unfortunate event. I hope the Kamaths recover from this blow and reopen their store at the earliest. Wish them all the best.

All must know that in every e syndicate bank branches acute staff shortage exists and the pressure of a branch manager is huge and most of the branch managers finds it difficult to strike a balance between official work and normal life due to the immense work pressure. Managers are the lot not able to avail leave even for urgent occasions. There will be pressure from customers, controlling office and many times letters cautioning accountability for not complying/finishing the work expected from higher offices. The root cause for Swapna’s suicide is not providing adequate staff to the branch. Without the staff at the counter, how can one manage a bank? Post of a branch manager is not a bed of roses but a thorny crown. Bank management should ensure sufficient staff to run the branch. So adequate measures should be initiated to recruit staff that will provide employment to the educated unemployed youth.

The Unions who has to play a responsive role has not done so. Night Curfew makes no sense. As such, in the night very few people are there. How is it going to help? Instead of shortening the business hours they should increase the business hour so that ‘rush hour’ business can be spread evenly throughout the day. I have been trying to get a real and scientific answer but never got one. And by not having curfew, burden on the police will be slightly lower. If they still have capacity use that excess capacity during rush hours to regaulate the traffic to business establishments.

These moves by the government are targeted to squash the sentiments of certain communities. Just yesterday, I witnessed, hundreds of people at a kola near Mallikatte and no one was wearing masks, yet no one from the district authorities bothered to stop or curtail any movement. Nor were there any penalties imposed. Whereas, weeks ago, they marched into malls and penalised the showroom staff who were not wearing masks. So, how do the district authorities have a selective vision? Why all the drama of showing the world that they are covid warriors? Just to save face, They have banned religious activities apparently of ‘all religions’, where Christians just have few important festivals, likewise Muslims. We Christians missed Christmas and now also Good Friday and Easter. It really is not fair. Where is justice? Why was there no covid transmissions during the huge political rallies? How come there was no restriction imposed when thousands joined for Mahashivrathri celebrations? Why were authorities choosing to be blind when thousands and thousands were fighting for space to walk at the festival recently. WHY? I guess, justice is really blind, because so much of sheer injustice prevailing while parties in power continue to throw their weight around and misuse their authority. But ,Who can run away from the watchful eyes of the Lord Almighty who sees everything and knows everything…..!!

Why would the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) want to change the names of roads & circles, which have become a part of the permanent addresses of many a home and a business? How does it help the development of the city? That apart, when the citizens are facing real problems in matters of public roads, footpaths, drainage, water supply, electricity, parking spaces, monsoon flooding, etc, why ignore them and instead, take up non-issues and unwanted matters like renaming of roads and circles? Surely, this is not the reason why the local representatives were elected to the City Corporation by the people, and therefore, the act of name-changing goes against the wishes of the people. It also shows that BJP Corporators, who dominate the Corporation, have some silent agenda to carry out behind the back of citizens. This is evident from the fact that the Light House Hill road, bearing the name – ‘St Aloysius College Road,’ was unilaterally changed by the MCC as ‘Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road’. Now, plans are afoot to change the names of other roads & circles bearing the minority community names, including the name of Lady Hill Circle at Urwa. As this amounts to discrimination against Minorities, safeguarded in the Provisions of the Constitution of India, this matter can well be taken to the Court of Law, to forbid the MCC from carrying out its anti-social moves of changing the Minority community names of roads & circles, especially the name of Lady Hill Circle.

It is a poorly planned intersection as most in Mangalore are. Civic authorities would be better advised to have better traffic designs than immaterial naming issues. Road safety should be the priority. Not sure why circles should have any name at all? Call it the intersection of xyz roads or giant mess point. How about ‘I Get Held Up here Circle” or ‘I am later to work because of this Circle’

Great article. Thanks to the work put in by various people to uncover the details. The article states: “There were no Muslim rulers around Mangaluru at that time, and the siege by Muslims could only have been by Kunjali Marakkar’s predominantly Muslim force.” A small viewpoint of mine: Mangaluru had two lots of foreign Muslims (and their descendants + local converts): Persian Shia centred around the Bandar area, and the Yemenite Sunnis centred around Ullal. The Persians appear to have been aligned with the Bangher Raja, who was welcoming of the Portuguese. The anti-Portuguese guild was led by the Yemenite Sunnis both in Kozhikode/Calicut and their ilk in Mangaluru. The rulers were under the control of these Yemenites (who bought local goods to export) rather than the other way around. It was the Yemenite camp that was against the Portuguese buying goods from the local rulers bypassing the Yemenites. Some of the Yemenite traders were not even Muslims. They were of another faith. A forthcoming book (I think in Italian) might shed some light on the role played by Mangaluru until the time of Vasco da Gama. PS: “Samuthri” is an incorrect interpretation by the Indians.

Excellent suggestion to reward those who inform about encroachments. Incentives work better than “duty” and “public service”. But the reward must be issued to the bank account of the informer immediately(within 2 days) , not posthumously. The reward must be something like 25 % of the value of the govt. land saved. So if 1 lakh value is saved then the reward will be 25k. If 1 crore value is saved then reward will be 25 lakhs! This amount should be recovered(within 2 days) from the head (not tail) of the department in charge for not allowing daylight robbery of govt land. If he/she is unable to pay then his property(including him) etc. should be auctioned and the amount paid to the informer recovered. Yes, I know nothing like this will ever be implemented in La La land. For those who live under the impression that WC & AS will solve all corruption and inefficiency, all I have to say is take the blinds off your eyes!

Excellent initiative by the staff of FMCOHS. Thank you very much. At least there is some concern in what they are doing , most others would have held a speech giving, bouquet giving ,photo session showmanship and ended the activity. The key is to hold these programmes all year round and regularly. The traffic policemen are among the worst affected by noise. These ear plugs are not expensive and the departments ought to be providing them to their employees but the IPS rarely get the opportunity to sweat it out in the hot sun and rain and for 10 hrs hence they don’t know and care for ground level realities.

The best solution is to follow the traffic rules. If you have to go ahead and take a U-Turn. Then it is better to do so. I understand that it may take more time, energy and cost to do so. However, it is the right thing to do rather than putting your own life and others life in danger by trying to take a shortcut and going in the wrong direction. Shortcuts, if they are in the wrong way, it’s never a right thing to do. The problem is not limited to the roads in Mangalore. It is a problem all over India I believe.

Prof. Edmund Frank has been seriously doing some good charitable work quietly for almost a decade now. I am happy and proud of his visions and generous service activities which have benefited many people especially the needy students who could not afford good education and other facilities The senior citizens, helpless families of the people who are in jail, medical facilities for the unfortunate and needy and education for the people who can’t afford the fees are some of the top priorities on Edmunds list. Building houses and donating to the needy has been one of his challenging projects which he has successfully completed. All these above projects are sponsored solely by Edmund on his own to date. I remember, I was told that Edmunds dad Late S C FRANK also sponsored education for many needy students, organised marriages of clerical staffs who could not afford functions at that time, this was the goodwill of such a great and humble man who’s traits and values must have inspired and motivated Prof Edmund Frank to cultivate and nurture this habit of sharing and helping the needy. It’s rightly said, sharing and giving, is the only way you can live a life of content, gratitude and satisfaction. We thank and congratulate Edmund for the good work he has been doing and may God Almighty bless him with the grace to continue the ventures of his visions and dreams in the future

Apart from the PRIVATE city buses with their blaring horns, it’s the Police with their Sirens and Hooters escorting the so called Superiors / burecrats & small time Politicians several times a day within the city who are the villains. Once in while the Vehicles escorting VIP movement no doubt a pain can be tolerated. Let the Police set an example and move in traffic in a normal way, unless there is an emergency.

If the 34-floor apartments continue to pollute, how will this rejuvenation going to help? It will be advantage for the contractor. Even after all the makeover, I seriously doubt the water quality will be better. Very serious action shouldbe taken against the builders of those complexes. They would have made crores paying bribes of crores. Now crores of public money is being spent on this project. By reading this report, I can say that their plan to going to be a mega failure unless serious action is taken to stop the pollution from the near by apartments. Who would be doing that? SAD. ANGRY
